Like the threads of a spider's web, diverse species in a natural region are interdependent. Just as the loss of a single thread in a web can weaken the whole structure, the loss of an individual species can disrupt an entire ecosystem, Electric utilities are becoming increasingly aware of the value of diverse ecosystems, and a number of power companies have initiated programs designed specifically to preserve and enhance biodiversity, Such programs go beyond traditional environmental efforts: they account for the well-being of entire habitats rather than focusing strictly on individual species, As representatives at EPRI's recent biodiversity conference stressed, this broader mission calls for a range of expertise that can only be acquired through partnership. Indeed, a variety of stakeholders-including industry, conservation groups, government agencies, and community members-are teaming up on the biodiversity issue, Some ave-calling on utilities to take the lead.

An efficient scheduler of RTOS for multi/many-core system

Recently there is a trend to broaden the usage of lower-power embedded media processor core to build the future high-end computing machine or the supercomputer. However the embedded solution also faces the operating system (OS) design challenge which the thread invoking overhead is higher for fine-grained scientific workload, the message passing among threads is not managed efficiently enough and the OS does not provide convenient enough service for parallel programming. This paper presents a scheduler of master-slave real-time operating system (RTOS) to manage the thread running for the distributed multi/many-core system without shared memories. The proposed scheduler exploits the data-driven feature of scientific workloads to reduce the thread invoking overhead. And it also defines two protocols: (1) one is between the RTOS and application program, which is used to reduce the burden of parallel programming for the programmer;(2) another one is between the RTOS and networks-on-chip, which is used to manage the message passing among threads efficiently. The experimental results show that the proposed scheduler can manage the thread running with lower overhead and less storage requirement, thereby, improving the multi/many-core system performance. A blocked thread is a thread that does no work. Moreover, a blocked thread could have exclusive access to a resource and another thread could block waiting to get exclusive access to the same resource. Deadlocks caused by situations like this are notoriously difficult to reproduce and debug. It's far better to design code so that deadlocks do not occur. In this article, I focus on one facility .NET provides that does this ― synchronization domains.

Investigation into the effect of the nut thread run-out on the stress distribution in a bolt using the finite element method

By means of comparing results from finite element analysis and photoelasticity, the salient characteristics of a finite element model of a nut and bolt have been established. A number of two-dimensional and three-dimensional models were created with varying levels a complexity, and the results were compared with photoelastic results. It was found that both two-dimensional and three-dimensional models could produce accurate results provided the nut thread run-out and friction were modeled accurately. When using two-dimensional models, a number of models representing different positions around the helix of the thread were created to obtain more data for the stress distribution. This approach was found to work well and to be economical.

Highly multithreaded architectures introduce another dimension to fine-grained hardware cache management. The order in which the system's threads issue instructions can significantly impact the access stream seen by the caching system. This article presents a cache-conscious wavefront scheduling (CCWS) hardware mechanism that uses memory system feedback to guide the issue-level thread scheduler and shape the access pattern seen by the first-level cache.

Acoustic reverse-time migration using GPU card and POSIX thread based on the adaptive optimal finite-difference scheme and the hybrid absorbing boundary condition

Reverse-time migration (RTM) is a powerful tool for imaging geologically complex structures such as steep-dip and subsalt. However, its implementation is quite computationally expensive. Recently, as a low-cost solution, the graphic processing unit (GPU) was introduced to improve the efficiency of RTM. In the paper, we develop three ameliorative strategies to implement RTM on GPU card. First, given the high accuracy and efficiency of the adaptive optimal finite-difference (FD) method based on least squares (LS) on central processing unit (CPU), we study the optimal LS-based FD method on GPU. Second, we develop the CPU-based hybrid absorbing boundary condition (ABC) to the GPU-based one by addressing two issues of the former when introduced to GPU card: time-consuming and chaotic threads. Third, for large-scale data, the combinatorial strategy for optimal checkpointing and efficient boundary storage is introduced for the trade-off between memory and recomputation. To save the time of communication between host and disk, the portable operating system interface (POSIX) thread is utilized to create the other CPU core at the checkpoints. Applications of the three strategies on GPU with the compute unified device architecture (CUDA) programming language in RTM demonstrate their efficiency and validity.

VARIATIONS IN TENSION OF AN UNWINDING thread

The variations in tension occurring as a thread is pulled with uniform speed from a cylindrical spool are considered. For simplicity the steady state case when the thread follows a curve of constant shape on the surface of the spool is taken. It is shown that there is a limiting value, depending on the tension of winding and speed of the thread, for the angle with which the thread leaves the spool. Curves are given from which it is possible to estimate the variations in tension as the point of unwinding moves up the spool surface.

Influence of Sewing threads on Seam Pucker of Sheep Nappa Leathers

This study reports an experimental investigation on the influence of sewing threads on seam puckering of sheep nappa leathers with variation of stitch density, stitch type and thickness of leathers. The seam pucker of sheep nappa leathers was evaluated using lock and zigzag stitches. Seam pucker was correlated with reversible strain, leather properties, thread properties and stitch density. The results show that core spun thread resulted in lower pucker than spun polyester thread. Also, specimens sewn with reasonably thicker and stronger thread exhibited less pucker. It is also observed that seam pucker decreased as the stitch density increased.

The French adage "Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose," or, the more things change, the more they stay the same, still rings true today. Reading over the essays of my predecessors, one recognizes the thread that runs through all of them, which is the constant need of CACM to reinvent itself. In fact, I discovered an April 24, 1964 report from a Commission of Thoughtful Persons to the ACM Council that stated "It was felt that Communications was becoming too much of a journal and that a re-evaluation is in order." I suspect this ongoing need to rethink CACM, a flagship publication for professionals working in a fast-moving and ever-changing field, will stay with us for the foreseeable future.

The problem of formation and breakage of liquid threads has been discussed from the theoretical point of view. It has been shown that the length of a liquid thread may be limited by two different break processes: brittle cohesive break and break-up into drops due to development of axisymmetrical capillary waves. The actual break moment and the thread length in given conditions are determined by cohesive break affected by development of capillary waves. The effect of waves capillary dominates in low-viscous liquids at low deformation rates — the practically independent cohesive process in high-viscous materials at rapid deformations. The experimental data are qualitatively consistent with the theory and directly confirm the character of break processes.
