Heapviz: Interactive heap visualization for program understanding and debugging

In this paper we present Heapviz, a tool for visualizing and exploring snapshots of the heap obtained from a running Java program. Unlike existing tools, such as traditional debuggers, Heapviz presents a global view of the program state as a graph, together with powerful interactive capabilities for navigating it. Our tool employs several key techniques that help manage the scale of the data. First, we reduce the size and complexity of the graph by using algorithms inspired by static shape analysis to aggregate the nodes that make up a data structure. Second, we implement a powerful visualization component whose interactive interface provides extensive support for exploring the graph. The user can search for objects based on type, connectivity, and field values;group objects;and color or hide and show each group. The user may also inspect individual objects to see their field values and neighbors in the graph. These interactive abilities help the user manage the complexity of these huge graphs. By applying Heapviz to both constructed and real-world examples, we show that it provides programmers with a powerful and intuitive tool for exploring program behavior.

We studied the course-long use of a program visualization tool called ViLLE in high school in Finland. The study was conducted in three consecutive instances of the first programming course. In the first two instances of the course, the students did not utilize ViLLE -- except for a short session -- while in the last instance students did ViLLE exercises throughout the whole course. The students who used ViLLE got significantly better results from the course's final exam. This supports our hypothesis that program visualization can be an effective method in teaching programming, and indicates that we should continue developing program visualization methods to further enhance learning.

This workshop will focus on using the new jGRASP viewer canvas which provides an exciting new dimension to dynamic program visualization. The canvas allows students and instructors to organize dynamic viewers of multiple objects and primitives to quickly form coherent program visualizations. Students can quickly build and save visualizations of their own programs, and faculty can create visualizations and provide them to students with example programs. "Playing" a program in canvas mode brings the visualization to life as objects come into scope and the canvas is updated automatically. All educators who teach Java will benefit from this workshop. It will be especially suitable for instructors who teach CS1 (introduction to programming), CS2 (introduction to data structures), and CS3 (introduction to algorithms), as well as for instructors of AP courses in high schools. jGRASP is a freely available educational IDE (http://***/); no prior experience with jGRASP is expected. Laptop required.

Modern, fast-phased, iterative and incremental software development constantly struggles with limited resources and a plethora of frequently changing requirements. This environment often requires the development projects to intentionally - for example through implementing quick-and-dirty - or unintentionally - for example through misinterpretation of requirements - deviate from the optimal product state. While most of the deviation is caught through practices like customer reviews, the remainder stays hidden in the product. The undocumented remainder is difficult to remove, it expands uncontrollably and it negatively affects development as deviations are unexpectedly encountered and overcome. The term technical debt describes this process of accumulating hidden work. Management of technical debt can be expected to be a major factor in software development efficiency and sustainability and as such it should be an integral part of the software implementation's knowledge management. In addition to being difficult to capture, the continuous evolution of the implementation makes maintenance of gained information a challenge. This paper discusses applying technical debt management for software implementations including the entry points for knowledge discovery, network analysis for overcoming the maintenance challenges as well as the pursued outcomes.

Currently, learning support environment for C programming beginners is still very unsatisfactory. This paper introduces a program visualization based support system for C programming learning and instruction, PROVIT. It provides useful functions for students and instructors to use at lectures, excises or their homes. The feature of PROVIT is that it can show the execution of any program written by the students or instructors, by interesting GUI, so the internal behaviors of the running program which usually will be hidden from beginners' eyes can be observed easily. PROVIT has been used in a special lecture for teaching high-school students and a subjective evaluation from the students was performed at an experiment. This paper also reports the result of the experiment.

programming plays an important role in both academic and career development among engineers and computer scientists;however, acquiring and developing knowledge of programming is a complex process. Understanding program behavior is one of the most important factors in learning programming and in maintenance of existing programs. Here, the need exists to develop tools to facilitate understanding and to serve more than documentation and initial planning needs of a program (i.e., pseudo codes and flowcharts). In order to understand a program's behavior, a programmer needs a computer model that will execute it. visualization has proven effective as a strategy for providing programmers and students with clearer meaning of their codes, developing and maintaining programs, and learning programming. This paper proposes a new diagrammatic methodology that produces a conceptual representation of program instructions. It can provide a foundation for understanding the behavior of running programs. The paper also reports on applying the new method to teaching an introductory university course;the results demonstrate that it improves understanding of programming and its underlying computer operations.

Software visualization aims to provide a more human-readable interface for the various software system aspects and characteristics. As majority of the time spent on modifying software is spent on gaining an understanding of an intangible and virtual system, the area of software visualization is widely researched as a solution to this. The paper in question presents a program visualization approach that focuses on illustrating the two software modifiability characteristics of cohesion and coupling. Unlike other approaches, which provide a visual representation for precalculated values, it uses the underlying cohesion and coupling mechanics to derive the actual layout. This allows the user to perceive the entire structure that has resulted to the cohesion and coupling values present in viewed nodes. There are three distinct steps to our approach. 1) Semantic analysis is used to record the static program structure into a directed and weighted graph. 2) The graph is then laid out using force-optimization to highlight important implementation structures. Finally, 3) sub-graph separation and further visual aids are provided to aid the user in observing cohesion and coupling for specific areas. Discussed benefits for this approach include information production efficiency, the ability to quickly analyze even large software implementations and intuitiveness of the visual delivery method.

The C programming language plays an important role in the education of engineers especially in the field of embedded systems. On the other hand C is often a burden for students in the first year, as they have many difficulties in writing their own programs and the failure rates of course examinations are typically high. We have investigated different approaches at our faculty in the last years, how to enhance the students' capabilities in C programming and how to lower the failure rate of the C-programming course. Several concepts involved are: visualization of control and data flow, game programming and automated assessment tools with plagiarism detection. We have integrated some of these concepts into the programming environment Virtual-C IDE. This paper discusses the educational benefits of using the Virtual-C IDE for lectures, self-learning and as a platform for programming assignments and reports our first practical experiences.

A Survey of Successful Evaluations of program visualization and Algorithm Animation Systems

This article reviews successful educational experiences in using program and algorithm visualizations (PAVs). First, we survey a total of 18 PAV systems that were subject to 33 evaluations. We found that half of the systems have only been tested for usability, and those were shallow inspections. The rest were evaluated with respect to their educational effectiveness. Script-based systems seem to be well suited for the viewing, responding, and changing engagement levels, while compiler-based systems do well for the construction and presenting engagement levels. Finally, we analyze additional PAV features of successful evaluations and hypothesize that they are relevant.

Learning to program is hard. But it can be facilitated for novice undergraduates. The programming task requires them to master, for instance, the solutions for standard problems and the meaning of running programs. Completing programming worked-out examples directs these students' attention to learning the essential of relations between problem-solving moves. Hence, the learning of programming solutions was supported by this program-completion approach in both the 2010 and 2011 editions of a computer science introductory module at the University of Minho. The learning of running worked-out examples can be further assisted by a program visualization tool. This pilot study reports the changes verified after introducing the Portugol tool for students to automatically visualize the execution of programming worked-out examples in the 2011 edition of that same module;and compares those changes to the 2010 edition. The positive significant effect on students' achievements, which made them rise, is then showed and discussed.
