This article aims to explore the impact of the integration of risk factors into delayed milestones for construction projects. A simulation model was developed to determine the impact of schedule variability on cost estimation. To generate random scenarios a Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) technique was applied. The developed model computes the cost impact of delayed milestone in the expected budget. Using a risk integration approach revealed the critical time frame that may lead to a budget deficit for a project. As a result, a number of cost-sensitive risk factors and schedule delays were identified for the critical time period where the risk of budget deficit increases. The method of integration proposed in this article highlights the priority of risk factors and schedule delays for construction contracts involving Payments at Event Occurrences (PEO). Consequently, the developed method can be useful for practitioners in anticipation of potential increase of costs, hence, prevention of failure due to budget deficit.

This paper aims to help professionals and academics involved in collaborative university-industry R&D programs and projects, by presenting a conceptual social media tool that can be used to improve communication and collaboration between internal stakeholders. The social media tool conceptualization was developed based on a case study research strategy. The case selected was a large publicly funded R&D collaborative program that covers 30 R&D projects carried out by a university and an industry partner. During the case study analysis three research methods were applied: participant observation, document analysis, and focus groups. The social media tool is conceptualized in seven functional building blocks: identity, relationships, sharing, presence conversations, reputation and groups. For each building block, its main objectives and requirements are detailed, within this particular context of collaborative university-industry R&D programs and projects.

During the next decades, the aerospace community will pursue goals such as human exploration beyond the Moon, commercialization and cost reduction of space activities or sustainability of air transport and space operations, bringing relevant economic, environmental and social benefits to the society. Young professionals development is a critical success factor to enable these goals and in consequence is an area of significant interest. This paper focuses on the methods for promoting knowledge exchange and networking among Young Professionals. On the one hand, it analyzes the different activities currently used for that purpose by the organizations of the sector as well as explores the opportunities to reinforce these methods. On the other hand, it presents the results of a survey addressed to Young Professionals and aimed at identifying their needs, expectations and benefits perceived in relation with these activities. This study was conducted as part of the. IAF's (International Astronautical Federation) IPMC (International programme/projectmanagement Committee) Workshop held during the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) 2013 in Beijing, whose objective was to provide Young Professionals a forum to share experiences and to discuss ideas and needs, and which counted with more than fifty delegates representing IAF member organizations from all around the world. Risk identification during the design and development phases of complex systems is commonly implemented, but often fails to result in the identification of events and circumstances that truly challenge project performance. Inefficiencies in cost and schedule estimation are usually held accountable for cost and schedule overruns, but the true root cause is often the realization of programmatic and technical risks. This research explores risk identification trends and biases pervasive during space system development that limit the awareness of such risks. The findings and results provide insight into how future engineering and risk managers can potentially avoid these shortfalls.

The roles of systems engineering, program and project management, and engineering management are continuously blurred and challenged in complex engineering organizations. The demands made of each of these functions can lead to increasing role confusion in otherwise historically well-defined functions. It is important to understand the reasons for existing practices in defining and utilizing these roles and the functions they perform in today's engineering systems. It is the goal of this thesis to show the motivation for current practices in systems and programmanagement, and to shed light on some of the lessons learned in managing both the technology as well as the encompassing technology programs. We look specifically at existing practices in the aerospace industry as our case-study to understand matrix organizational structures, as well as gain insights from the commercial industry and academic literature on the practices deployed in innovation and new product development and management.
