Protection of computer systems from an unauthorized access to the classified information is a very essential issue. The research deals with some aspect of this problem resulting from the fact, that for instance, an author of a software for embedded system is not aware that it is possible to identify partly or entirely, program code. It can be done in non-invasive way, without influence on the microprocessor internal structure and program memory. The authors intend to prove that it is possible to recognise the instructions executing by certain type of microprocessor, analysing only the character of disturbances in the power supply lines. The research results inspire to the more careful study of ways and methodology for developing software, which should highly hinder the software reverse engineering.

First-principles study of defect formation in a photovoltaic semiconductor Cu₂ZnGeSe₄

The formation energies of neutral Cu, Zn, Ge, and Se vacancies in kesterite-type Cu2ZnGeSe4 were evaluated by first-principles pseudopotential calculations using plane-wave basis functions. The calculations were performed at typical points in Cu-(Zn1/2Ge1/2)-Se and Cu3Se2-ZnSe-GeSe2 pseudoternary phase diagrams for Cu2ZnGeSe4. The results were compared with those for Cu2ZnSnSe4, Cu2ZnGeSe4, and Cu2ZnSnS4 calculated using the same version of the CASTEP program code. The results indicate that Cu vacancies are easily formed in Cu2ZnGeSe4 under the Cu-poor condition as in the above compounds and CuInSe2, suggesting that Cu2ZnGeSe4 is also a preferable p-type absorber material for thin-film solar cells. The formation energies of possible antisite defects, such as CuZn and CuGe, and of possible complex defects, such as Cu-Zn + Zn-Cu, were also calculated and compared within the above materials. The antisite defect of Cu-Zn, which has the smallest formation energy within the possible defects, is concluded to be the most hardly formed in Cu2ZnGeSe4 among the compounds. Smart contracts that build up on blockchain technologies are receiving great attention in new business applications and the scientific community, because they allow untrusted parties to manifest contract terms in program code and thus eliminate the need for a trusted third party. The creation process of writing well performing and secure contracts in Ethereum, which is today's most prominent smart contract platform, is a difficult task. Research on this topic has only recently started in industry and science. Based on an analysis of collected data with Grounded Theory techniques, we have elaborated several common security patterns, which we describe in detail on the basis of Solidity, the dominating programming language for Ethereum. The presented patterns describe solutions to typical security issues and can be applied by Solidity developers to mitigate typical attack scenarios.

The deployment of Galileo constellation leads to the need of efficient algorithms for acquisition and tracking of Galileo signals. These signals are different from GPS signals and this difference should be taken into consideration in the program code. This paper deals with the acquisition of Galileo signals in Matlab. Rapid development of industry and economy requires quick and efficient education of large amount of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In computer science, especially in programming, this trend is very noticeable and real experts are needed and hard to create. But new problem has emerged in higher education and its name is plagiarism. In order to prevent this one would have to check all students program codes to find similarities. To do this efficiently a procedure has been designed upon which a certain prototype was developed and tested We discuss efficiency of this solution and we also mention some other methods and algorithms. We also discuss some other possible usages of this solution and we mention further actions and steps in our research.

Developers write unit tests together with program code, and then maintain these tests as the program evolves. Since writing good tests can be difficult and tedious, unit tests can also be generated automatically. However, maintaining these tests (e.g., when APIs change, or, when tests represent outdated and changed behavior), is still a manual task. Because automatically generated tests may have no clear purpose other than covering code, maintaining them may be more difficult than maintaining manually written tests. Could this maintenance be avoided by simply generating new tests after each change, and disposing the old ones? We propose disposable testing: Tests are generated to reveal any behavioral differences caused by a code change, and are thrown away once the developer confirms whether these changes were intended or not. However, this idea raises several research challenges: First, are standard automated test generation techniques good enough to produce tests that may be relied upon to reveal changes as effectively as an incrementally built regression test suite? Second, does disposable testing reduce the overall effort, or would developers need to inspect more generated tests compared to just maintaining existing ones?

One of the most dangerous forms of the memory manipulation based attacks is the code reuse based attack type. In this type of attack the malwares do not need to place own malicious code in the memory space, they use the already linked code to achieve the aim. The present study discusses a critical part of the jump oriented programming which is nowadays the most up-to-date memory manipulation attack type. The controlling element of the jump oriented attacks is the so-called dispatcher gadget which controls the creation of the malicious code from the available legitimate code patches. The use of the dispatcher gadgets has already been introduced on 32bit Linux systems but generally the search algorithm and the classification are still open questions. This study presents the dispatcher gadgets and their characteristics found in the basic dll files of the windows 32 bit system and in the 64 bit Linux libc files.

This paper discusses a strategy for translating the Java programming language to a form that is suitable for execution on resource limited embedded systems such as softcore processors in FPGAs, Network-on-Chip nodes and microcontrollers. The translation strategy prioritises the minimisation of runtime memory usage, generated code size, and suitability for a wide range of small architectures over other desirable goals such as execution speed and strict adherence to the Java standard. The translation procedure, or Concrete Hardware Implementation of a software application first converts the application's compiled Java class files to a self-contained intermediate representation conducive to optimisation and refactoring. The intermediate format is then serialised into a programming language compilable to the target architecture. This paper presents techniques for analysing whole Java applications, translating Java methods and building a stand-alone translated application with the same functional behaviour as the original Java. An example C-code generator is described and evaluated against similar previous approaches. An existing benchmark application, JavaBenchEmbedded, is demonstrated to require less than 30KiB of program code and 16KiB of runtime heap memory when executing on a Xilinx MicroBlaze Processor.

This paper illustrates the research results concerning the character of signals emitted by the selected microcontroller via the power supply lines. The main purpose of the study is to determinate the instruction that is currently realized by the microprocessor, based on the conducted emission in the power supply lines. The research results presented in the study indicate that there are the differences in the spectrum of the signal emitted by the processor, depending on the program being executed. Thus, it can be presumed that there is a partly possibility to determinate the instruction currently realized by a microprocessor based on the conducted disturbances emitted by the power supply lines. It can be suggested that there is a risk for programs written in microprocessor memory, which should be protected from copying.

With the advent of portable and high density microelectronic devices, the minimization of power consumption in CMOS VLSI circuits is becoming a critical concern. An embedded system is a combination of electronic hardware and software and sometimes additional parts designed to perform a dedicated function. In many cases system (microprocessor) must monitor the amount of power it uses and take appropriate steps to save the battery life. There are several methods to save power consumption of microprocessor unit including: clock control, power-sensitive processors, low-voltage and circuit shutdown. The effect of reducing power consumption can be achieved either by hardware or software optimization. This paper presents the software level power consumption analysis of MCU, focusing mainly on instruction and data realization.
