In this paper, I detail what Bill Hart-Davidson describes as the "anxiety" that many technical communicators have about implementations of single source documentation. Specifically, I briefly explore what I see as some of the key potential rhetorical problems with single sourcing, in part by drawing on real-world examples gathered from conversations with and shadowing of technical communicators in their workplaces. I address the following potential objections that we need to handle in pragmatic and/or theoretical terms in order to claim for ourselves the kind of theoretical approach that will best suit our professional goals as well as those of our user populations: Single Sourcing Can Privilege Organizational Needs Over Enduser Needs Single Sourcing Can Limit Perceptions and Potential of Technical Communicators Single Sourcing Can Contribute to Under-Theorizing.

The strategies for the selection of an Intelligent Document Management (DM) systems to solve the real-world business challenges are discussed. While selecting a DM system the corporate vision, goals and objectives should be retained in mind. A key factor within a corporate's requirement document is to use questions tactically, play one question off against the other with the sole intention of catching the vendor out. Throughout the selection process it is imperative to talk to the prospective vendors about their mission statement and track record. Finally the benefits in using document management to capture the organization's Knowledge base, controlling the growth of the business.

'Virtual Reality', or interactive 3-D graphics has been the subject of much hype with regard to its promise in the field of engineering. If virtual reality provides a uniquely effective means of conveying information about 3-D forms, as its proponents contend, then it should have found widespread acceptance in the field of technical documentation, which is the distribution of information concerning engineering products. However, to date the use of this technology in working documentation systems is limited. This paper discusses some of the reasons for the limited progress made in the use of interactive 3-D in technical information systems, and concludes that there is a central role for interactive 3-D in technical documentation, but that progress needs to be made in the its authoring and presentation. The methodology of the production of interactive 3-D technical diagrams is discussed. Examples of some prototype tools are presented.

The documentation for a framework must meet several requirements. These requirements can all be met by structuring the documentation as a set of patterns, sometimes called a `pattern language'. Patterns can describe the purpose of a framework, can let application programmers use a framework without having to understand in detail how it works, and can teach many of the design details embodied in the framework. This paper shows how to use patterns to document a framework, and includes a set of patterns for HotDraw as an example.

This paper presents a framework for improving the presentation of Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams, as applied in technical documentation produced at the IBM Toronto Software Laboratory. UML diagrams are a key part of program design. They can enhance understanding of complex programming concepts, and assist in problem analysis and solution design. In turn, UML diagrams can add significant value to documentation, helping the user to understand not only the solution but also the reasons for using that particular solution. Too often, however, UML diagrams are created in isolation by a developer, with little or no thought as to how they will be presented in documentation, be it online, in a PDF file, or in a printed book. This compartmentalization does not allow for the possibility that a diagram that was useful in the design phase of a project will not necessarily bring value to documentation if its stated processes or goals are unclear. Poorly designed UML diagrams can also have a negative impact on both project scheduling and costs. For example, production delays can arise because of increased back-and-forth time among developers, writers, and designers, and translation costs can escalate if a diagram contains text that must be translated. This paper presents a method for ensuring a collaborative process for UML diagram design. It provides specific tasks for each of the three key roles in developing UML diagrams for documentation: program developer, technical writer, and graphic designer. It makes the program developer aware of design principles that might otherwise be overlooked. It shows the technical writer ways to improve the design of the diagram, and offers a method for converting files to a common format that can then be utilized by the graphic designer. Finally, it provides the graphic designer with a methodology for quickly producing a clear, error-free final image that is manageable in size. By following the guidelines presented here, developers, wr

The digital networked world is enabling and requiring a new emphasis on personalized document creation. The new, more dynamic digital environment demands tools that can reproduce both the contents and the layout automatically, tailored to personal needs and transformed for the presentation device, and can enable novices to easily create such documents. In order to achieve such automated document assembly and transformation, we have formalized custom document creation as a multiobjective optimization problem, and use a genetic algorithm to assemble and transform compound personalized documents. While we have found that such an automated process for document creation opens new possibilities and new workflows, we have also found several areas where further research would enable the approach to be more broadly and practically applied. This paper reviews the current system and outlines several areas where future research will broaden its current capabilities.

To reduce potential discrepancies between textual and graphical content in documentation, it is possible to produce both text and graphics from a single common source. One approach to co-generation of text and graphics uses a single logical specification;a second approach starts with CAD-based representation and produces a corresponding textual account. This paper explores these two different approaches, reports the results of using prototypes embodying the approaches to represent simple figures, and discusses issues that were identified through use of the prototypes. While it appears feasible to co-generate text and graphics automatically, the process raises deep issues of design of communications, including the intent of the producer of the documentation. This paper discusses fundamental requirements necessary for implementing a model-based document production and management system for Construction. This system intends to capture, in concert with the contemporaneous documents, other information about context, rationale and process. This is a requisite for formulating a project's history, and reconstructs the true accounts of what happened during a period of construction. Accurate accounts of project events are essential for a successful and equitable claim resolution.

Construction is one of the most information intensive industries;typically professionals access the industry information resources on a daily basis. The major constraints to the future development of a formally encoded knowledge base are fragmented information sources and lack of comprehensive classification schemes. In agreement with earlier research and over twenty years of practical experience we have found that manually categorising a large collection of documents is error-prone, time-consuming, expensive and produces inconsistent results. Attempts over recent years to automate this using state-of-the-art categorisation techniques, have also proven to be wanting due to the shallow internal representation in the document set. In this paper we describe an approach to overcome this problem by combining the benefits of automated categorisation with efficient and effective use of human judgement. We present a tool based on this philosophy that utilises machine learning, information retrieval and information visualisation techniques to help bibliographers analyse the document collection. By analysing the content of the unstructured document, this tool suggests to the bibliographer keywords, subject headings and candidate documents to include under subject headings. This greatly increases the speed at which bibliographers can process the documents, increases the accuracy of their work and results in a categorisation system that reflects the terminology and relationships held in the actual knowledge base. This work is now being applied to enhance one of the market leading retrieval products in the construction industry.
