To reduce potential discrepancies between textual and graphical content in documentation, it is possible to produce both text and graphics from a single common source. One approach to co-generation of text and graphics uses a single logical specification;a second approach starts with CAD-based representation and produces a corresponding textual account. This paper explores these two different approaches, reports the results of using prototypes embodying the approaches to represent simple figures, and discusses issues that were identified through use of the prototypes. While it appears feasible to co-generate text and graphics automatically, the process raises deep issues of design of communications, including the intent of the producer of the documentation. This paper describes one approach to decreasing user disorientation as they use a hypertext On-Line Help System. It is especially important to use orientation aids when a help file can be accessed in a context sensitive manner from an application. Using icons to identify types of information in a structured help file can help users fight the disorientation that can occur through the use of hypertext. The consistent use of icons of this type can reduce user disorientation in two ways: by clearly labeling the type of information presented in any given help screen, and by linking the user directly to a list of similar types of information. A Related Topic list at the bottom of each Screen Summary and Procedures help screen provided links to related information regardless of the type of help screen the information was presented in.

Construction is one of the most information intensive industries;typically professionals access the industry information resources on a daily basis. The major constraints to the future development of a formally encoded knowledge base are fragmented information sources and lack of comprehensive classification schemes. In agreement with earlier research and over twenty years of practical experience we have found that manually categorising a large collection of documents is error-prone, time-consuming, expensive and produces inconsistent results. Attempts over recent years to automate this using state-of-the-art categorisation techniques, have also proven to be wanting due to the shallow internal representation in the document set. In this paper we describe an approach to overcome this problem by combining the benefits of automated categorisation with efficient and effective use of human judgement. We present a tool based on this philosophy that utilises machine learning, information retrieval and information visualisation techniques to help bibliographers analyse the document collection. By analysing the content of the unstructured document, this tool suggests to the bibliographer keywords, subject headings and candidate documents to include under subject headings. This greatly increases the speed at which bibliographers can process the documents, increases the accuracy of their work and results in a categorisation system that reflects the terminology and relationships held in the actual knowledge base. This work is now being applied to enhance one of the market leading retrieval products in the construction industry.

The fastest growing market segment of new computer users is senior citizens. For many seniors, the computer is a puzzling device whose inner workings will forever remain a mystery. A lack of understanding of how a computer works doesn't necessarily mean that seniors' interest in using a computer is diminished. But it does mean that most of the documentation written to help them learn computing skills and use common applications is inappropriate. Based on a series of free seminars conducted in the first half of 2003, three issues were identified as key requirements of computer documentation for seniors that addresses their unique circumstances: basic vocabulary, just enough explanation, and exception-oriented guidelines. Recent advances in digital press technology have enabled the creation of high-quality personalized documents, with the potential of generating an entire batch of one-of-a-kind documents. Even though digital presses are capable of printing such document sets as fast as they would print regular press jobs, raster image processing might possibly be performed for every different page in the job. Such process demands a large computational effort and it is therefore interesting to gather repeated images that are used throughout all documents and rasterize them as few times as possible. Moreover, performing such process separately from document production in the publishing workflow allows optimization to be performed prior to final printing, thus allowing it to take press hardware specifics into account, and reducing the time taken for it to produce the final output. This paper describes techniques to perform this task using PPML as the document description language, as well as the main issues concerning this kind of document optimization. Several gathering policies are described along with explanatory examples. We also provide and discuss experimental data supporting the use of such strategies.

This paper describes an approach to documenting the conceptual design of Web Transactions using UWAT+. A Web Transaction is a collection of serial and/ or parallel activities that contributes to achieving a user-oriented business objective using a Web-based application. UWAT+ is a meta-model for describing the various aspects of a Web Transaction in a holistic manner. It is an extension of the Transaction Design Model that is part of the Ubiquitous Web Applications (UWA) framework, a comprehensive framework for designing ubiquitous Web applications. A series of (extended) UML diagrams are used to graphically document the UWAT+ meta-model, which greatly facilitates adoption of the approach by practicing software engineers and technical writers. Use of the approach for documenting Web Transaction designs in both forward and reverse engineering processes is described.
