Innovative approaches in the teaching of computer science are required to address the needs of diverse target audiences, including groups with minimal mathematical background and insufficient abstract thinking ability. In order to tackle this problem, new pedagogical approaches that make use of technologies such as Virtual and Augmented Reality, Tangible User Interfaces, and 3D graphics are needed. This paper draws upon relevant pedagogical and technological literature to determine how Augmented Reality can be more fully applied to computer science education.

Object-oriented programming (OOP) is probably the most popular programming paradigm today. Because of this, it is often taught at faculties associated with computer science. The general idea of OOP is to break a complex problem into abstractions called objects which interact with each other via method invocation. On the other hand, the actor model provides a computation model based on agents that are called actors. Actors in the actor model are similar to objects in OOP, but unlike objects are concurrent and communicate by message passing. At our faculty, a game-based approach is used to teach students about OOP. The actors in a game can be taught as agents that interact with an environment. Furthermore, students program agent behaviour in our artificial intelligence course. Therefore, students have experience with both objects and agents. However, students still find it difficult to understand the actor model and build applications with it. In order to help students, we have developed a visualisation system for actor-based applications. We collected responses on the system after presenting it to students that were taught the model. In this paper, we i) present the developed visualisations system and ii) report the results on the responses collected.

Visual program simulation (VPS) is a new, interactive form of educational program visualisation, in which learners use graphical controls to direct a program's execution rather than simply watching an animation of it. In this article, we report on a qualitative empirical study of novice programmers learning through VPS. From an analysis of interviews with learners and supplementary observational data, six different ways of perceiving learning through VPS emerged. While a rich understanding of VPS opens up rich possibilities for learning programming, we also uncovered several ways of understanding VPS that do not afford such opportunities. For instance, learners do not always attribute meaning to the visual elements, and even when they do, they may fail to associate the visualised concepts with programming practice. Our results concretise how learners have to experience a number of key insights about VPS before effective learning through VPS can take place. Based on our findings, we make pedagogical recommendations with the overall goal of improving the integration of VPS and the rest of the teaching and learning environment. Our results may find applications beyond VPS within educational program visualisation in general.

Recently, the concept of Software-Defined Network (SDN), which allows us to administer and configure a network in a centralized and software-programming manner, has gathered network engineers' and researchers' attention rapidly. In particular, the expectation and concern to OpenFlow as an implementation of the SDN is remarkable. As a result, research activities, which include prototyping, implementation, demonstration and experiments, conducted over OpenFlow networks have been a worldwide tendency. In such research activities, however, the difficulty in understanding network topology, traffic amount and an actual path of a network flow on the OpenFlow network, and the intricacies in debugging software designed for OpenFlow are serious problems in the development process of OpenFlow controller. This research aims to realize a visualization software that facilitates researchers to perform OpenFlow controller development and demonstration experiments performed on an actual OpenFlow network. In this paper, the authors summarize the achievement of their research work in progress as well as the future direction.

Large software projects often require a programmer to make changes to unfamiliar source code. This paper describes a set of tools, called Team Tracks,, designed to ease program comprehension by showing the source code navigation patterns of fellow development team members. One technique shows a list of Related Items, given that the user is viewing a given method or class. Another technique shows the Favorite Classes, by showing a class hierarchy view that hides less frequently visited classes, methods, and members. Two user studies, a laboratory study and afield study, were run to evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques. The results of the two studies demonstrate that sharing navigation data can improve program comprehension and is subjectively preferred by users.

This paper presents a strategy for the visualization of dynamic object relationships in Java programs. The metaphor of a chemical molecule is used to aid Comprehension, and to help in reducing the size of the object graph. Our strategy has been implemented by dynamically instrumenting Java bytecode to collect trace data, which is then analyzed and visualized in 3D using VRML. Quantitative and graphical results are presented, based on an analysis of programs in the SPEC JVM98 and JOlden benchmark suites.

To regain architectural insight into a program using dynamic analysis, one of the major stumbling blocks remains the large amount of trace data collected. Therefore, this paper Proposes a heuristic which divides the trace data into recurring event clusters. To compose such clusters the Euclidian distance is used as a dissimilarity measure on the frequencies of the events. Manual inspection of these event sequences revealed that the heuristic provides interesting starting points for further examination.

In this paper we explore the combination of novel spatio-temporal model-checking techniques, and of a recently developed model-based approach to the study of bike sharing systems, in order to detect, visualize and investigate potential problems with bike sharing system configurations. In particular the formation and dynamics of clusters of full stations is explored. Such clusters are likely to be related to the difficulties of users to find suitable parking places for their hired bikes and show up as surprisingly long cycling trips in the trip duration statistics of real bike sharing systems of both small and large cities. Spatio-temporal analysis of the pattern formation may help to explain the phenomenon and possibly lead to alternative bike repositioning strategies aiming at the reduction of the size of such clusters and improving the quality of service.

We present the visualization of an array for a visual programming language, designed with the qualities of transparency, clarity, visual appeal and efficiency in mind. These qualities are essential to making the array useful to our target users, people without significant programming experience or computer-science background. We then implemented the visualization in the visual programming language known as the Data Factory, and ran a preliminary experiment to help us evaluate the design.
