programming plays an important role in both academic and career development among engineers and computer scientists;however, acquiring and developing knowledge of programming is a complex process. Understanding program behavior is one of the most important factors in learning programming and in maintenance of existing programs. Here, the need exists to develop tools to facilitate understanding and to serve more than documentation and initial planning needs of a program (i.e., pseudo codes and flowcharts). In order to understand a program's behavior, a programmer needs a computer model that will execute it. visualization has proven effective as a strategy for providing programmers and students with clearer meaning of their codes, developing and maintaining programs, and learning programming. This paper proposes a new diagrammatic methodology that produces a conceptual representation of program instructions. It can provide a foundation for understanding the behavior of running programs. The paper also reports on applying the new method to teaching an introductory university course;the results demonstrate that it improves understanding of programming and its underlying computer operations.

The traditional control flow diagram (CFG) only displays the overall framework of the program, but ignores its detailed control information and the complex inner structure. programmers can hardly comprehend the whole program through traditional CFG. Therefore, an algorithm is proposed to generate a new kind of CFG with abundant details and inner structure. After parsing the compilation results of Clang static analyzer, the algorithm firstly extracts the key control information of a program, and then uses the control information to build up the basic display units. Secondly, the algorithm orders and packs these basic display units to form an intermediate XML file. Finally, the Jgraphx graphics library is introduced to parse the intermediate XML file and render the new CFG. Experiment shows that when comparing with the conventional CFG, the new CFG that drawn by the proposed algorithm can demonstrate more details, states, and data flows. The CFG drawn by the proposed algorithm can also offer strong support for complex software maintenance and testing.

Visual computing emhpasizes visibility of information of interest and direct manipulation of visible information. It has become a dominant style of computing in recent years. In this paper, we review three major technologies that provide a platform for visual computing. These technologies reflect the needs of various people who use visual computers: programmers, end users, and scientists. We begin with a discussion of important developments in visual programming and follow with discussions of visual interfaces and visualization. We conclude with a summary of visual computing's current status and identify critical areas of research that should be emphasized in future work. © 1992 Springer-Verlag.

Software development is difficult because software is complex, the software production process is complex and understanding of software systems is a challenge. In this paper we propose a 3D visual approach to depict software production cost related program information to support software maintenance. The information helps us to reduce software maintenance costs, to plan the use of personnel wisely, to appoint experts efficiently and to detect system problems early.

programming is a field that influences other disciplines in a transversal way, so its learning is necessary considering the emergence of new jobs that will require programming knowledge in the future. However, programming raises certain difficulties during its learning, especially in understanding programming concepts due to the high level of abstraction required. This level of abstraction can be reduced by using graphic representations that motivate the student and facilitate the understanding of certain programming concepts that arise at the beginning of the learning process. Therefore, this paper introduces ANGELA, a graphic notation based on the metaphor of roads and traffic signs that is meant to complement the learning process of beginner students who are starting to program by visualizing programs. These visualizations can be automatically generated from the source code of the programs, thanks to the modular and scalable design of the notation, and used by teachers to explain programming concepts during classes. The proposal has been evaluated with students in order to validate if the notation is appropriate to represent the concepts it tries to abstract from and if it results easy for the students to understand. Additionally, some use cases are presented in real-world scenarios in order to demonstrate the flexibility of the proposal.

Live programming is a regime in which the programming environment provides continual feedback, most often in the form of runtime values. In this paper, we present Projection Boxes, a novel visualization technique for displaying runtime values of programs. The key idea behind projection boxes is to start with a full semantics of the program, and then use projections to pick a subset of the semantics to display. By varying the projection used, projection boxes can encode both previously known visualization techniques, and also new ones. As such, projection boxes provide an expressive and configurable framework for displaying runtime information. Through a user study we demonstrate that (1) users find projection boxes and their configurability useful (2) users are not distracted by the always-on visualization (3) a key driving force behind the need for a configurable visualization for live programming lies with the wide variation in programmer preferences.

Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA) are one of the main pillars of software development;however, abstractions around them are hard to teach and to be understood by students. The most common approaches adopted by instructors to demonstrate the behavior of DSAs are the use of resources like slides and whiteboard sketches to create program illustrations. This task may be slow and tedious because these illustrations need to be continuously updated to represent new algorithm inputs and modifications. In this paper, we propose Willow, a tool for program visualization Simulation (PVS), which supports user interactions to manipulate the generated visualizations. With these manipulations in the visualization, we expect the user to be able to create better examples, resembling Algorithm visualization Simulation tools (AVS), which are specialized in providing visualizations for specific DSAs. We evaluated our tool through a preliminary qualitative study with teaching assistants from an introductory Computer Science course who all give review lessons to the students. Our preliminary results show that the tool was well accepted by the participants, but we still need more studies to validate the use of the tool in classrooms. With the use of our tool features in the teaching-learning process, we expect that instructors may be able to interactively and more clearly explain DSAs to their students, without the hassle of hours creating slides or drawing by hand messy examples of algorithms.

Control flow coverage criteria are an important part of the process of qualifying embedded software for safety-critical systems. Criteria such as modified condition/decision coverage (MC/DC) as defined by DO-178B are used by regulators to judge the adequacy of testing and by QA engineers to design tests when full path coverage is impossible. Despite their importance, these coverage criteria are often misunderstood. One problem is that their definitions are typically written in natural language specification documents, making them imprecise. Other works have proposed formal definitions using binary predicate logic, but these definitions are difficult to apply to the analysis of real programs. Control-Flow Graphs (CFGs) are the most common model for analyzing program logic in compilers, and seem to be a good fit for defining and analyzing coverage criteria. However, CFGs discard the explicit concept of a decision, making their use for this task seem impossible. In this paper, we show how to annotate a CFG with decision information inferred from the graph itself. We call this annotated model a Control-Flow Decision Graph (CFDG) and we use it to formally define several common coverage criteria. We have implemented our algorithms in a tool which we show can be applied to automatically annotate CFGs output from popular compilers.

Novice programmers often struggle with many concepts underlying computer programming. The concept of a program variable that is, a named storage location is a centerpiece of the programming languages typically taught in introductory computer science courses including C, Java, JavaScript, Python, and C++. However, to date empirical studies suggest that misinterpretation of the state of a program remains a primary source of errors by novice programmers. We address this challenge by defining a game-based approach to interactive program debugging and by emphasizing the concept of program state in our approach. We specifically chose the metaphor of the popular "Space Invaders" videogame to provide a visual interpretation that reinforces the notion of program state in a way likely to be attractive to college students majoring in computer science. Our visualization technique and the resulting toolset are intended to steer students toward a debugging mindset centered on read and write operations of program variables. Here we discuss the key aspects of our game-based debugging approach. We also report preliminary results from field studies with actual college students who used our toolset to debug simple programs in which we injected faults.

Comprehension of a program, either written by oneself or by someone else, is an important part of the daily life of a programmer. While many approaches support program comprehension of object-oriented programming languages, e.g., by providing slicing or reengineering the program into visual designs, there are fewer research activities targeting functional programming languages. For the specific case of Haskell programs, we see a need in program comprehension to understand how functions interact with each other with respect to the data and its type they exchange. In this paper, we present an approach to aid in understanding by providing an automatic transformation of Haskell programs into data-flow diagrams. These data-flow diagrams visualize the manipulation of values by the different functions which comprise the program. Because types are a very important part of writing and understanding Haskell programs, the data-flows in the diagrams are explicitly enriched with type information. This allows us to display intermediary types that usually are not visible to the programmer. The approach is based on category theory and illustrated by examples.
