We present the full testing and characterization results of a pneumatic-less high-speed roughing (vacuum) meso-pump that demonstrates, within our knowledge, the best near-atmosphere performance-up to date while obviating the conventional dependence on pneumatics (e.g. gas cylinders). The roughing pump operates completely all-electrically by manipulating multiple micro membranes utilizing only a single electromagnetic actuator, thus in the smallest packaged volume (22.8cc) of the same kinds while achieving a record vacuum of 206torr within only 5 minutes. The single actuator operation is enabled by developing programmable micro hydraulics designs where multiple pump membranes were passively-controlled with designed time delays in a desired sequence. The fabricated prototype produced the maximum flow rate of 11.56 sccm at 50 Hz electromagnetic driving frequency;continually operated over 466 hours;and successfully demonstrated the timed actuation of multiple membranes utilizing only a single electromagnetic actuator.

Three-dimensional, physics-based simulators are important to the field of self-reconfigurable robotics because they allow researchers to approximate the physical interactions and autonomous behaviors of large numbers of modules in a low-cost, safe, and highly-controlled manner. This paper presents a novel, high-performance, general-purpose simulator for autonomous, self-reconfigurable robots called ReMod3D (RM3D) that overcomes the speed and scalability limitations of existing self-reconfigurable simulators while, at the same time, allowing for realistic module structures, complex environments, and high physical simulation fidelity. While most existing self-reconfigurable simulators view modules as actuated physical bodies with programmable controllers, RM3D views them as embodied agents, defined not only by their physical bodies (links, joints, docks, sensors, actuators) but also by their minds (actions, percepts, behaviors, world models) and the noise inherent in the interaction between sensors, actuators, and the environment. RM3D also simulates inter-module dock connection breakage, something novel for self-reconfigurable robot simulators. Additionally, we present experimental evidence showing that this novel architecture makes RM3D well-suited to locomotion, manipulation, reconfiguration, and embodied intelligence research.

Cyber attacks have become surprisingly sophisticated over the past fifteen years. While early infections mostly targeted individual machines, recent threats leverage the widespread network connectivity to develop complex and highly coordinated attacks involving several distributed nodes [1]. Attackers are currently targeting very diverse domains, e.g., e-commerce systems, corporate networks, datacenter facilities and industrial systems, to achieve a variety of objectives, which range from credentials compromise to sabotage of physical devices, by means of smarter and smarter worms and rootkits. Stuxnet is a recent worm that well emphasizes the strong technical advances achieved by the attackers' community. It was discovered in July 2010 and firstly affected Iranian nuclear plants [2]. Stuxnet compromises the regular behavior of the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system by reprogramming the code of programmable logic controllers (PLC). Once compromised, PLCs can progressively destroy a device (e.g., components of a centrifuge, such as the case of the Iranian plant) by sending malicious control signals. Stuxnet combines a relevant number of challenging features: it exploits zero-days vulnerabilities of the Windows OS to affect the nodes connected to the PLC; it propagates either locally (e.g., by means of USB sticks) or remotely (e.g., via shared folders or the print spooler vulnerability); it is able to modify its behavior during the progression of the attack, and communicates with a remote command and control server. More importantly, Stuxnet can remain undetected for many months [3] because it is able to fool the SCADA system by emulating regular monitoring signals.

We demonstrated a novel electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) device for digital microfluidic using a flexible, transparent, and conducting graphene electrode. We showed that a graphene electrode had a lower leakage current and a higher breakdown voltage compared to a gold electrode when they were under the same dielectric layer such as Teflon. The droplet movement was manipulated on graphene-based EWOD using a sequential switching voltage controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC) relay array.

Programable logic controllers (PLCs) are complex embedded systems which are widely used in industry. The formal modeling of PLC system for verification is a rough task. Good verification model should be faithful with the system, and also should have suitable scale because of the state explosion problem of verification. This paper proposes an automatic framework for the construction of verification model of PLC systems. BIP (Behavior, Interaction, Priority) separates behavioral and architectural aspects in modelling. Specifical PLC features and system architecture are modelled by BIP framework. They are universal for all PLC applications. We define the operational semantics of PLC instruction and present an automatic translation based modeling method for PLC software. A small example is demonstrated for our approach.

This paper introduces a hardware-efficient controller for rectifiers with power factor correction (PFC) that feature circuits for cancellation of the output voltage ripple at two times the line frequency. It provides simultaneous and independent regulation of the ripple amplitudes and dc voltage values for both the PFC stage and the cancellation circuit, allowing for the tradeoff management between the overall system volume and its efficiency. Unlike previous solutions, the controller does not require costly components for obtaining information about the output current, converter parameters, or phase and frequency of the voltage ripple. These advantages are obtained through the hardware sharing and use of a novel two-band compensator. The effectiveness of the controller is demonstrated on a 45 W programmable-output flyback based PFC rectifier prototype with a buck-boost based ripple cancellation circuit. The results demonstrated achieves a 1% ripple for the full range of operating conditions with maximum of 90% ripple reduction while utilizing a 500uF output capacitor for PFC, providing high power factor and low harmonic distortion.

A Coloured Petri Net (CPN) based method for programmable Logic Controller (PLC) program validation is proposed in this paper. It uses a simple fixed net structure and does not require the creation of different Petri Nets for every new PLC program. The base of the method is the so-called technology description and operation state table used in engineering practice. The CPN simulates the operation of the PLC and compares the resulted values to the desired ones. In the case of a difference it indicates the existence of an error. The method is capable of automatic program validation and safety analysis, which is demonstrated through the example of an oil tank system.

In this paper, we propose enhancements at the medium access control (MAC) sub-layer for the G3-PLC technology. In particular, we develop a convergent network, consisting of different network devices, to easily integrate G3-PLC in Ethernet local area networks (LANs). The proposed network leads to coverage and throughput improvements for in-home/building applications. Furthermore, since the G3-PLC medium access control (MAC) scheme is based on carrier sense multiple access (CSMA), its performance decreases with the increasing number of network nodes. To overcome this problem, we propose to implement a contention-free MAC scheme based on time division multiple access (TDMA). In particular, we optimize the beacon-enabled mode of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The convergent network performance is evaluated using an OMNeT++ simulation platform. Numerical results show considerable performance improvements in different network configurations.

A monolithic inertial sensor based automatic offset calibration technique is proposed in this paper. With this technique, the output offset voltage caused by sensor and amplifier mismatches is trimmed from 600mV down to 50mV from the measurement results. For providing larger dynamic range, a programmable gain control amplifier is included in this architecture. This inertial sensor is implemented by the 0.18 mu m CMOS MEMS process and the total chip area is 1.3 x 1.3 mm(2).

In order to circumvent the state explosion problem involved in the analysis of a reachability graph, the structure theory is widely adopted when dealing with deadlock control and liveness-enforcing problems of flexible manufacturing systems modeled by Petri nets. Siphons, as a kind of significant structural objects, are extensively used for the deadlock prevention. However, since a siphon is defined as a set of places and does not contain any weight information, the siphon-based methods encounter a series of problems when dealing with generalized Petri nets whose arc weights are equal to or greater than one. As a concept different from siphons, augmented weighted simple directed circuits are proposed in our previous work to investigate a kind of intrinsically live structures in general systems of simple sequential processes with resources allocation (GS(3)PR). The work extends the concept of resource usage ratios (RU-ratios) to GS(3)PR to explore such intrinsically live structures. On the ground of RU-ratios, a kind of liveness and ratio-enforcing supervisors is applied to control GS(3)PR models. The monitors in such a supervisor are simply and intuitively connected to a plant net model and can be reused by adjusting their parameters when the configuration of the plant is changed, which resembles the working style of a programming logic controller. Several examples are used to illustrate the proposed method.
