Movable railroad bridges, consisting of lift, bascule, or swing bridges have been used by American rail tracks that cross usable waterways for over a century. Although custom made, movable bridges share many common components and designs. Most of them use weight bearing towers for the movable span using electric or electro-hydraulic systems lift and/or rotate these movable spans. Automated locks hold the bridge in place as soon as the movement stops. The bridge operation, train and ship signaling systems work in synchrony for trains and waterway traffic to be granted safe passage with minimal delay. This synchrony is maintained by using custom-made control systems using programmable Logic controllers (PLCs) or Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). controllers located on the movable and the static parts of the bridge communicate using radio and/or wired underwater links sometimes involving marine cables. The primary objective of this paper is to develop a framework to analyze the safety and security of the bridge operating systems and their synchronous operations with railway and waterway systems. We do so by modeling the movable physical components and their control system with the interconnected network system and determine the faults and attacks that may affect their operations. Given the prevalence of attacks against PLCs, FPGAs and controllers, we show a generic way to determine the effect of what if scenarios that may arise due to attacks combined with failures using a case study of a swing bridge.

The AC voltage test is an important means to effectively detect the insulation defects of the equipment. The problems of low efficiency, poor safety, and poor compatibility of the AC voltage test for smart electricity meters and data acquire terminal of the special transformer, the fully automatic AC voltage test device are studied and designed by software programming, PLC control technology, and automatic crimping technology. The automatic test and result judgment of the AC voltage test for the smart electricity meters and data acquire terminal of the special transformer are realised, which makes many problems of the existing test equipment to be effectively solved. Thus, the efficiency, compatibility, safety and reliability of the test are improved.

Design of intelligent control system for networkable stereo garage based on microprocessor

The demand for stereo garages has been an urgent issue as the number of vehicles in China has been soaring these years. An intelligent control system for networked stereo garages is introduced here. Based on authors' design, the movement of the parking plate is controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC). PLC sends the parking space status, the limit switch state, and the motor running parameters to the acorn RSIC machine (ARM) control system. The ARM control system then uploads the license plate recognition result and the garage operation data to the cloud platform instantly through internal network. The cloud platform would develop corresponding control strategies based on data received from the cloud portal (website and application (APP)) and the ARM controller. The test result of the system indicates that it meets the requirements of relevant technical indicators and the actual needs of users.

Nowadays, industrial automation systems are mostly used with proprietary hardware and software. Creating such systems requires relatively large costs. This is a problem when designing control systems with a limited budget, which are created, for example, in developing countries or small businesses. Currently, there have been opportunities to create low-cost automation systems by using solutions distributed on the basis of open-source and open-hardware. The work reviews the most important solutions and presents examples of their use in automation systems.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth chemical and phase profiling of air-oxidized niobium nanofilms has been performed. It is found that oxide layer thicknesses depend on the initial thickness of the niobium nanofilm. The increase in thickness of the initial Nb nano-layer is due to increase in thickness of an oxidized layer.

At a time when all the talk is of automation, Industrial Internet of Things, robotics et al, it is perhaps a fitting time to raise a toast to one of the building blocks of modern manufacturing, the PLC, which turns 50 this year. Talk these days is of pushing control to the edge, where remote nodes can communicate with each other, while machine and system flexibility is largely taken for granted. All of which would have been inconceivable in the 60s when control came by virtue of banks of relays. Any change of function would require shutting down the machine, rewiring and adding to the relay matrix, debugging and then hoping the next change wasn't imminent.

In order to develop a friendlier human-machine interface, more precise control of the six degree of freedom robot will be achieved. The manipulator is driven by PLC which is programmed in TIA Portal V14, and PLC is responsible to keeping up with the upper computer. The communication mode is TCP/IP communication protocol, and the upper computer is developed by using Socket technology under C++MFC environment. Kinematics analysis of the manipulator is carried out by D-H parameter method and embedded into the upper computer program([9]). Finally, the absolute positioning control of the manipulator is realized. Through the visualized human-computer interface, the motion process and control principle of learning six degrees of freedom robot can be understood in a more depth.

The recent shift towards the utilisation of automated systems has necessitated newer and more advanced technologies that can improve efficiency, accuracy and flexibility of processes in the industrial environment. The focus of this paper is on remote monitoring and automation for Bottle filling industry using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. Effective storage and management of the packaged bottles (warehouse management systems) has also been illustrated through a comparative study between two warehouse management techniques using Barcode technology and crane automation systems. The optimisation of warehouse activities can further increase the consistency and efficiency of the industry. Implementation has been carried using programmable Logic Controller (PLC) - SCADA systems which provides durability, flexibility and ease of programming. This system can be further expanded into any other sorting industries as well.

Tidal stream is the flow of water due to the rise and fall of the tide. Those flows have the advantage in that they are predictable as to their times of occurrence and to their rates of flow. However, installation and maintenance of subsea turbines is both difficult and expensive. For those reasons it is necessary to implement robust condition monitoring. The purpose of condition monitoring is to predict maintenance issues before they become catastrophic. The aim of this paper is to explore the feasibility of capturing and analyzing condition monitoring data using a programmable controller (PLC) with associated software and displaying that data and its relevance on a graphic user interface (GUI). For this purpose an experimental test rig was constructed. Four turbine process variables (PV) were captured, their values displayed and analyzed. The conclusion of this experimental work is that the feasibility of deploying PLC technology for condition monitoring of subsea power generators shows promise and further work in this area is proposed.
