This paper introduces the application of off-the-shelf Android tablet computers as real-time capable control devices. We present an IDE to create and execute PLC programs written in Structured Text on a tablet running RTAndroid. This derivative of Android with support for real-time applications ensures the predictable execution of PLC programs. A USB-driven field device adapter enables interaction with peripheral hardware. The evaluation demonstrates the competitiveness of our solution in comparison to conventional PLC devices.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) has brought a paradigmatic shift in the networking industry and has led to significant benefits in the data-center and enterprise network domains. The service provider networks that form the largest segment of networking industry, are now evaluating SDN technologies for adoption. In this paper, we present a SDN framework for service provider networks and report the first field trial of SDN in a tier-1 service provider domain. The proposed SDN framework is built using Carrier Ethernet and augmented with recently proposed Segment Routing paradigm manifested through Software Defined-Carrier Ethernet Switch Routers (SD-CESRs). Carrier Ethernet on account of its distinct, programmable control plane and Segment Routing through its source routing capabilities facilitates SDN implementation. The SD-CESRs are deployed in a tier-1 service provider network in the metropolis of Mumbai. The SDN framework is extended through specific APIs to enhance revenue bearing services portfolio of the service provider and performance results from the field are shown to validate the benefits of SDN adoption.

In this paper a method is proposed to implement controllers and supervisors for manufacturing systems designed by Petri Nets (PNs) on programmable Logic controllers (PLCs) using Object Oriented Programming (OOP). In the resulting program each instruction is directly related to the evaluation of a transition, to the update of the marking, or to the enabling of a transition. This preserves the structure of PNs and entails reusability since it allows the user to easily modify the program directly, starting from the modifications made to the PN design.

We developed an UML-State-charts Object Oriented Design Pattern for PLCs IEC61131-3. This PLC UML-State-chart Design Pattern aims to explore the advantage of Object Oriented Programming by IEC61131-3 in PLCs, and to provide a direct map of UML State-chart to PLC code. We illustrates the design pattern and its use through UML Class diagrams and an application example. This Design Pattern can be used to reduce the development time of State-charts in automation software. It can also lead towards further investigations in PLC Design Patterns that may improve the whole development of automation software.

This paper presents Dual Redundant Profibus Network Architecture in hot standby fault tolerant control systems. Here, two independent profibus backbones are used to connect main CPU rack with main & redundant I/O racks respectively. In the above fashion, the redundant CPU rack is also configured. This completely prevents the loss of control over process due to multiple failures in I/O communication interfaces in the DACS system. And also redundancy in "Y link" is established to acquire profibus DP slave data. This immensely enhances "the fault tolerant & redundancy" level of communication between PLC to I/O & DP slave. This completely avoids the loss of field I/Os communication due to various failures in profibus network.

The results of a PLC implementation of embedded Model Predictive Control (MPC) for an industrial problem are presented in this paper. The embedded MPC developed is based on the linear MPC module in SEPTIC (Statoil Estimation and Prediction Tool for Identification and Control), and it combines custom ANSI C code generation with problem size reduction methods, embedded real-time considerations, and a primal-dual first-order method that provides a fast and light QP solver obtained from the FiOrdOs code generator toolbox. Since the primal-dual first-order method proposed in this paper is new in the control community, an extensive comparison study with other state-of-the-art first-order methods is conducted to underline its potential. The embedded MPC was implemented on the ABB AC500 PLC, and its performance was tested using hardware-in-the-loop simulation of Statoil's newly patented subsea compact separation process. A warm-start variant of the proposed first-order method outperforms a tailored interior-point method by a factor of 4 while occupying 40% less memory.

Increasing efforts are being made in securing the communication infrastructure used in electric power systems. On the surface, this should greatly reduce the chances of successfully executing the type of coordinated and distributed cyber attacks necessary to cause large-scale failures. However, existing communications security schemes in power control systems only consider explicit communications. In this paper, we show that there is a rich set of covert communication channels available to attackers for use in coordinating large scale attacks against power grids. Specifically, we present PHYCO, a novel covert channel that leverages physical substrates, e.g., line loads, within a power system, to transmit information between compromised device controllers. Using PHYCO, two compromised controllers that are miles apart can coordinate their efforts by manipulating relays to modify the power network's topology. This can be done without requiring the use of any explicit communication channels, e.g., power line communications, and can evade intrusion detection sensors aimed at overt traffic. We have evaluated PHYCO using real-world programmable logic controllers on a realistic simulated power grid. Our results show that PHYCO can bypass existing intrusion detection sensors as well as physical inspections by carefully crafting covert communications to have minimal exterior consequences within normal operating thresholds.

Balancing energy demand and production is becoming a more and more challenging task for energy utilities. This is due to a number of different reasons among which the larger penetration of renewable energies which are more difficult to predict and the meagre availability of financial resources to upgrade the existing power grid. While the traditional solution is to dynamically adapt energy production to follow the time-varying demand, a new trend is to drive the demand itself by means of Direct Load Control (DLC). In this paper we consider a scenario where DLC functionalities are deployed at a large set of small deferrable energy loads, like appliances of residential users. The required additional intelligence and communication capabilities may be introduced through smart plugs, without the need to replace older "dumb" appliances. Smart plugs are inserted between the appliances plugs and the power sockets and directly connected to the Internet. An open software architecture allows to abstract the hardware sensors and actuators integrated in the plug and to easily program different load control applications.
