In this paper, we propose a parallel and programmable VLC decoder which includes the arithmetic representation of codewords, codeword regularity, and its hardware configuration. With the proposed hardware configuration, the parallel VLC decoder is faster and with less memory than the traditional decoder. Furthermore, the programmable VLC decoder, which can decode more codewords in one clock, can be devised by extending the parallel concept.

A survey of recent developments in the implementation of multivalued logic circuits using charge-coupled device technology is presented. A set of basic logic gate structures which is suitable for synthesis of both binary and multivalued functions is defined. Techniques for synthesis of one- and two-variable functions is considered in detail. A special case of threshold functions is emphasised. Finally, realisation of multivalued functions in terms of programmable logic arrays is described.

Toward Ultracompact Multi-Materials Rectangular Waveguide Terminations

A new multi-materials' compact topology, allowed by multi-materials 3-D-printing, is proposed to design microwave terminations in rectangular waveguide technology. The concept is based on a Salisbury-like resonant absorber constituted of a 3-D-printed polylactic acid (PLA) dielectric spacer and a lossy dielectric in the form of a pad whose dimensions allow controlling the frequency of maximum absorption. The flange of the termination is also printed with a lossy dielectric to achieve a compact and low-weight component that can be directly connected to a standard metallic waveguide. The concept has been validated experimentally in K-band (18-26 GHz) and X-band (8-12 GHz) with relative bandwidths (RBWs) around 20% for both frequency bands. These components demonstrate a quite stable temperature behavior. The power-handling capability (PHC) has been investigated through simulations and experiments. It was demonstrated that the maximum power than can support the termination is around 4-5 times lower than a more standard and bulky termination made with the same materials.

Video compression with custom computers

Custom computers are a new computing paradigm where reconfigurable logic in the form of SRAM-based Field programmable Gate arrays are used as a co-processor resource in addition to a conventional CPU. This allows application developers to adapt not only the software but also the hardware of the computer on an application-by-application basis. Experimental evaluation of computational speed for 2-D Discrete Cosine Transforms of 8x8 pixels blocks within a 512x512 pixel image show that a custom computer can provide speedups of 50-100 times compared to state-of-the art computer workstations, confirming the applicability of custom computing for video processing applications.

The influence of POSS type on the properties of PLA

In this study, the effects of reactive and non-reactive poly(hedral oligomeric silsesquoxane) (POSS) type and their loading level on the mechanical, morphological and thermal properties of PLA composites were investigated for the first time in the literature. A decrease in the melt viscosity of PLA was obtained from the vertical force measurements in the presence of POSS particles except for high O-POSS loading level. This played an important role for power consumption during micro-compounding process. The mechanical test results showed that, the elastic-modulus and yield strength of the PLA/POSS composites were lower than pure PLA in most cases. Moreover, a significant improvement in Izod impact strength of PLA composites was achieved by incorporation of POSS particles into PLA regardless of POSS type. Morphological analysis showed that POSS particles dispersed homogeneously in polymer matrix for all compositions. The glass transition temperature of PLA decreased with the addition of POSS particles. POSS particles also enhanced the decomposition temperature of PLA. POLYM. COMPOS., 37:1497-1506, 2016. Multiple Cooperative Attackers for Tag-Based Physical Layer Authentication

This article concerns the problem of ensuring the security of the tag-based Physical-Layer Authentication (PLA) schemes under multiple cooperative attackers. This problem is important and challenging because of the following reasons. First, if more attackers launch a cooperative attack, the success probability of launching an eavesdropping attack will be improved. Second, based on a cooperative communication system, cooperative attackers can launch more advanced attacks, e.g., a cooperative attack that traps the legitimate user to re-transmit the same tag again. Thus, it is challenging and desirable to construct a secure tag-based PLA scheme under multiple cooperative attackers. For effectively defending against a cooperative attack under multiple coop-erative attackers, we propose a new tag-based PLA scheme, referred to as the PLA with the Detection of a Cooperative Attack (PLA-DCA) scheme. The basic idea of the PLA-DCA scheme is to utilize the extra noise in a replayed signal, since a replayed signal inevitably changes the distribution property of receiver noise, e.g., increment of the noise variance. Then, we implemented the proposed scheme and conducted extensive performance comparisons to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme. We evaluate the security of various schemes through equivocation, which represents the uncertainty of estimating a tag. From the simulation results, we verify that the proposed scheme provides higher security than the prior tag-based PLA schemes.

OPTIMUM AND HEURISTIC ALGORITHMS FOR AN APPROACH TO FINITE STATE MACHINE DECOMPOSITION

Techniques have been proposed in the past for various types of finite state machine (FSM) decomposition that use the number of states or edges in the decomposed circuits as the cost function to be optimized. Such measures are not reflective of the true logic complexity of the decomposed circuits. In addition, previous methods have been mainly heuristic in nature and offer limited guarantees as to the quality of the decomposition. In this paper, optimum and heuristic algorithms for the general decomposition of FSM's such that the sum total of the number of product terms in the one-hot coded and logic minimized submachines is minimum or minimal, are presented. This cost function is much more reflective of the area of an optimally state-assigned and minimized submachine than the number of states/edges in the submachine. The problem of optimum two-way FSM decomposition is formulated as one of symbolic output partitioning and it is shown that this is an easier problem than optimum state assignment. A procedure of constrained prime implicant generation and covering is described that represents an optimum FSM decomposition algorithm, under the specified cost function. It is shown that by means of this formulation, arbitrary decomposition topologies can be targeted by suitably modifying the encodeability constraints during the covering. Exact procedures are not viable for large problem instances because of limitations imposed by currently available computing resources. To overcome these limitations, a novel iterative optimization strategy of symbolic implicant expansion and reduction, modified from two-level Boolean minimizers, that represents a heuristic algorithm based on our exact procedure, is presented. Reduction and expansion are performed on functions with symbolic, rather than binary-valued outputs. The heuristic procedure can be used for problems of any size. Flame Resistance of Polylactic Acid With Cyclophosphazene Derivative and NiAl Layered Double Hydroxide Doped Zn

NiAl layered double hydroxide doped Zn with dodecylbenzenesulfonate anions (NiZnAl) was prepared by one-step coprecipitation method. Hexaphenoxycyclotriphosphazene (HPCP) is a cyclophosphazene derivative. NiZnAl first combined with HPCP were used to prepare polylactic acid (PLA) composites. Effect of NiZnAl and HPCP on flame retardancy of PLA was investigated. NiZnAl exhibited nano-dispersion in PLA composites, and its layers were intercalated by PLA chains. Limiting oxygen index value of all the PLA composites with incorporation of HPCP and NiZnAl increased, and UL-94 tests passed V0 ratings. With the presence of NiZnAl in PLA/HPCP composites, the amount of graphite crystalline carbon after burning was increased. High peak of heat release rate, heat release capacity, and the total heat release had a big reduction. The amount of char residue was increased apparently. The thermal degradation process was delayed. The summary results suggested that NiZnAl and HPCP had a good synergistic flame retardant effect in PLA. POLYM. COMPOS., 39:3994-3999, 2018. Improving Melt Strength of Polylactic Acid

Melt strength of polylactic acid (PLA) was improved through various modifications including grafting, crosslinking, chain extension, blending, plasticizing and nucleation. The results showed that melt strength was increased, to varying degrees, by crosslinking, chain extension and blending. In addition, melt strain (detected by velocity) was increased by chain extension, blending with elastomer, and plasticizing, but was decreased by crosslinking. The molecular weights, thermal properties and viscosity of the modified PLAs were also studied to investigate the causes of the observed variations in melt strength. Viscosity results generally corresponded with that of melt strength, but not with that of melt strain. With the exception of plasticizing and nucleation, the modifications had no significant effect on the thermal properties of PLA. The molecular weight (in particular the extremely large molecules representing by M-z) and the polydispersity of PLA were significantly increased after crosslinking and chain extension, which accounts for the observed increase in melt strength.

SPV-BES System Synchronized to Three-Phase Four-Wire AC Distribution Network

Solar photovoltaic (SPV) system performance degrades due to the presence of nonlinear/unbalanced loads at the point of common coupling (PCC). These loads also cause the current in the ac network's neutral conductor, which causes additional losses and the voltage difference between the neutral conductor and the ground. This work addresses these problems and presents the control algorithm for the SPV system to improve its performance and the power quality (PQ) at the PCC, to reduce the current flow in the ac network's neutral conductor, and to maintain the balanced operation in the ac network at unbalanced loads. The battery energy storage is incorporated with the SPV system to improve the supply's reliability at the load end by operating the system in the islanded mode (ILM) when the ac network supply is interrupted. A new application of the variable zero attracting (VZA) least mean square (LMS) adaptive control algorithm is presented for the PQ improvement in both grid-connected mode (GCM) and ILM operations. The VZA component reduces the steady-state oscillation in the LMS algorithm without compromising its dynamic response. The seamless operation is used to avoid any abnormality in voltages and currents of the system operating mode changes from the ILM to the GCM after the grid recovery. The performance of the system is tested on the developed Simulation model and further verified by the experimental study performed on a reduced rating prototype.
