A number of reconfiguration strategies have been proposed for increasing the yield of VLSI chips. In most cases the associated reconfiguration problems are NP-complete. Therefore, exhaustive search algorithms are generally used in order to find a solution when one exists. In this paper we present the notion of admissible sets and show how such sets can be used to significantly reduce the running time of many exhaustive search algorithms for reconfiguration problems. As an example, the authors find a class of admissible sets called excess-k critical sets that can be used in the design of fast search algorithms for the problem of reconfiguring redundant random access memories (RRAMs). They also consider applications to the problems of reconfiguring RRAMs with shared spares and reconfiguring redundant programmable logic arrays (RPLAs). A high speed and low-power 8-bit carry-lookahead adder (CLA) using two-phase all-N-transistor (ANT) blocks which are arranged in a PLA design style with power-aware pipelining is presented. The pull-up charging and pull-down discharging of the transistor arrays of the PLA are accelerated by inserting two feedback MOS transistors between the evaluation NMOS blocks and the outputs. The addition of two 8-bit binary numbers is executed in 2 cycles. The proposed power-aware pipelining design methodology using a simple data transition detection circuit takes advantage of shutting down the processing stages with identical inputs in two consecutive operations. Not only is it proved to be also suitable for long adders, the dynamic power consumption is drastically reduced by more than 50% at every process corner.

A comparison of the area and speed characteristics of CMOS PLA and Polycell representations of various control logic blocks was carried out. Both types of layout were generated automatically, and were derived from the same high level logic description. The major objectives were to quantify the differences between the two types of circuit and to predict Polycell speed and circuit area from the PLA truth table. Both objectives were achieved. Polycell layout was shown to be a viable alternative to PLAs under certain circumstances.

In ontology-based requirements engineering, ontology is used to express domain knowledge, so that the inconsistency of domain knowledge can be found by semantic checking. This paper purposes a new algorithm based on Tableaux algorithm to detecting and resolving inconsistencies of ontology. All kinds of consistency rules of domain knowledge are formally defined at first, and then the semantic checking algorithm is presented to resolve these inconsistencies. This paper investigates laser microfabrication on biodegradable polymer material (polylactic acid, referred to herein as PLA). In case of fabrication at atmospheric pressure, i.e., in the air, a phenomenon is observed that the inside of hole is clogged at several points by ablated material and residual gas. Considering this, the fabrication is carried out under vacuum to evaporate these materials from the inside of the hole, and to subdue hydrolysis reaction by removing oxygen. The fabricated long thin hole is applied to blood collection.

The Department of Electrical Engineering of the State of Mexico (UAEM) decided to offer courses related to the automation of processes using different types of PLCs and other digital devices. Along the preparation of educational material for these courses, we encountered difficulties in obtaining detailed information on PLC devices. Thus, we concluded it was worthwhile to develop a friendly PLC multimedia tutorial as an aid for electrical engineering students on learning process of the fundamentals and operation of PLCs. Multimedia is a tool that helps human in the acquisition of knowledge through three natural ways for the assimilation of information: (1) visualization of images and videos, (2) reading of specific topics, and (3) listening of audio information in an interactive manner. The tutorial was developed using Toolbook 4.0 software and contains 270 pages in 450 Mbytes approximately. The multimedia tutorial includes general characteristics of PLCs and as well as technical details of two PLC models, one from FESTO and the other from Mitsubishi. The tutorial also contains information about the most common PLC programming languages.

Partial discharge (PD) measurement in a needle to plane gap is suggested by IEC used for ranking dielectric liquids. This paper investigates PD behavior in eight liquids using a 20 mm ac stressed needle to plane gap. Parameters varied were tip radius, frequency and voltage. Both discharge phase distributions and pulse sequences were studied. PD occurrence was highly correlated to the frequency of the applied voltage. A higher frequency of 600 Hz gave a higher PD rate than the lower frequencies, like 60 Hz. The tip radius does also affect the PD pattern. The influences from tip radius and frequency indicate a strong correlation between space charges and PD initiation. It was observed that large positive PDs almost always was preceded and followed by a smaller negative PD in the neighboring half cycles, indicating an influence from charges of opposite polarity created in the previous half cycle. Exposing the gap to X-rays gave a PD burst for both polarities. This indicates that electrons are needed for initiation of PDs and that lack of electrons is the reason for low occurrence rate of positive PDs.

Internet path available bandwidth is an important metric for distributed application performance optimization. However, current network coordinate system causes large errors when being used to predict such performance metric. In this paper, based on theoretical and Internet measurement data analysis result, we show that though not strictly satisfy the constraint, Internet path available bandwidth does have some degree of ultra metric space feature. Then we propose an available bandwidth prediction mechanism PathGuru based on this feature. In PathGuru, each node obtains an outgoing and an incoming bandwidth vector using measurement data to and from landmarks, and the available bandwidth between any two nodes is predicted according to the two vectors as well as ultra metric space constraint. Experimental results on Internet measurement dataset show that PathGuru has reasonable prediction accuracy and can also deal with the available bandwidth symmetry violation problem.

This paper proposes a novel VLSI architecture to compute the DWT (discrete wavelet transform) coefficients using Mallat's algorithm with reduced complexity. We studied the commonality embedded in the mirror low-pass and high-pass filters of the algorithm and use a PLA as an address generator (PAG) to load the data for cascaded FIR computation. By using an embedded downsampling process in the control signal design, we reduced the complexity by saving storage and computation. The prototyping design is implemented and fabricated using the AMI 1.5 micron CMOS process through the MOSIS service.
