The introduction of a small portable Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) player has been made possible by the development of a new 18 channel head and associated new read electronics. One has to pay special attention to the equalization of the signals, as this depends on the tape direction during recording and playback, as well as the degree of asymmetry of the head design.

Physical-Layer Authentication for Ambient Backscatter-Aided NOMA Symbiotic Systems

Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are two promising technologies for the future wireless communication networks owing to their high energy and spectral efficiencies. The AmBC-aided NOMA symbiotic radio is a promising technology because of possessing advantages of AmBC and NOMA. Nonetheless, when a number of devices with limited power and computation capability access to the AmBC-based NOMA symbiotic networks, communication security becomes a critical issue. In this paper, we investigate physical-layer authentication (PLA) to identify the users and prevent illegal access and malicious activities for AmBC-based NOMA symbiotic networks. Moreover, channel estimation errors are considered when calculating the probability of false alarm (PFA) and probability of detection (PD) of the far user and near user. To enhance the authentication performance, three PLA schemes for the considered networks are designed according to the multiplexing form of the authentication tags: i) PLA with shared authentication tag (PLA-SAT);ii) PLA with space division multiplexing authentication tags;iii) PLA with time-division multiplexing authentication tags. To characterize the proposed PLA schemes, we first derive the PFA and the PD of the considered AmBC-based NOMA symbiotic networks. Then, the covertness is studied in terms of outage probability and asymptotic behavior in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime. Extensive analytical and computer simulated results show that: i) The PLA-SAT scheme has better performance than the other two authentication schemes with the same threshold;ii) The outage performance of systems employing authentication schemes is worse than those without authentication;iii) There exists a trade-off between robustness and covertness.

We report here the investigation by X-ray in situ tomography of the thermally induced phase separation under cooling of two kinds of polymer solutions: a binary mixture of polylactic acid (PLA) with 1,4-dioxane and a ternary mixture with PLA, 1,4-dioxane, and water. Under cooling, the crystallization of the solvent induces the phase separation with the polymer. The use of PLA was guided by its interesting combination of properties: good mechanical strength, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. Furthermore, the thermal induced phase separation of PLA and 1,4-D-dioxane is extensively used for fabrication of biomedical scaffolds. The in situ synchrotron tomography is here an ideal tool to characterize both the kinetics of formation of the phase separation and the shape of the crystals that are formed for a specific ramp of temperature. Our experimental setup based on a cryocooling system yields a large temperature gradient of 18 degrees C. This gradient that is clearly a limitation of our setup can be nonetheless useful to produce a strong anisotropy in the crystallization and thus anisotropic scaffolds.

Microcellular foamed plastics have significantly contributed to the plastics industry by achieving weight reduction of the product and material cost savings. Limitations in petroleum resource reserves have lately propelled active research into foaming process. In particular, the extremely small cell size at less than 10 mu m and higher density for microcellular foaming process compared to the existing chemical foaming keeps its mechanical property decline small. In short, microcellular foamed plastics keep mechanical property decline to a minimum and deliver lightweight products. The research into microcellular foaming process thus far has focused on elevating foaming expansion ratio or keeping off mechanical property decline such as intensity. One of the most important trends in the polymer field nowadays is the replacement of petroleum-based polymers with bio-based ones. Among bio-based polymers, polylactic acid (PLA) and thermoplastic starch (TPS) are very attractive due to their availability, relatively low cost and their appealing physical and mechanical properties. This paper uses polylactic acid (PLA), which is a biodegradable material, to carry out foaming and describes research outcome of foamed PLA's optical properties. Desorption time was controlled during the test to change cell morphology and monitor the subsequent changes in diffused reflectivity. This research is the first-ever attempt to suggest new application areas of PLA, poor in mechanical properties.

Effect of Steady Shear on the Morphology of Biodegradable Poly(ε-Caprolactone)/Polylactide Blend

The biodegradable polymer blend containing 70/30 weight ratio of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and polylactide (PLA) was prepared by means of melt mixing. The evolution of the 'sea-island' phase structure in the steady shear flow was studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and parallel-plate rheometer. The results show that the morphological evolution induced by steady shear follows different mechanisms at various flow rates. The lower shear rates (Newtonian flow) promote coalescence of the discrete PLA droplets, whereas higher shear rates (non-Newtonian flow) promote break-up of the droplets. The dynamic rheological responses of PCL/PLA blend before and after steady preshear were then analyzed using emulsion model and Taylor equation. The results show that the evolution approaches of the morphology highly depend on changed level of the critical effective interfacial tension in the steady shear flow, which are further confirmed by the transient rheological measurements. A novel, systematic approach to sequential MOS circuit design is described. The approach aims at minimizing the number of transistors needed to implement a given switching function. The techniques used are based on the switching network logic (SNL) approach, which was previously introduced as a systematic method of designing MOS combinational logic circuits. The authors extend the approach to sequential MOS circuit design. Examples are given to show that the proposed method reduces the number of MOSFETs as compared to existing design methods. A CAD (computer-aided design) program based on the SNL approach is presented as a finite state machine generator.< >

An architecture for electrically configurable gate arrays using a two-terminal antifuse element is described. The architecture is extensible, and can provide a level of integration comparable to mask-programmable gate arrays. This is accomplished by using a conventional gate array organization with rows of logic modules separated by wiring channels. Each channel contains segmented wiring tracks. The overhead needed to program the antifuses is minimized by an addressing scheme that utilizes the wiring segments, pass transistors between adjacent segments, shared control lines, and serial addressing circuitry at the periphery of the array. This circuitry can also be used to test the device prior to programming and observe internal nodes after programming. By providing sufficient wiring tracks segmented into carefully chosen lengths and a logic module with a high degree of symmetry, fully automated placement and routing is facilitated.< >

Bio-Based Device to Control Active Compound Release for Food Preservation: The Case of Propionic Acid

This work was aimed at assessing the release of propionic acid as a repellent from reservoir-type release devices. Agar-based balls were developed and covered with various layers of biodegradable materials as polylactic acid (PLA), chitosan (CHIT), pectin (PEC) and gelatin (GEL), which are properly combined. The release kinetics of propionic acid from different bio-based devices was defined and trends of data were properly fitted. Results highlighted that developed systems allowed controlling the active compound release with different effectiveness. In particular, the device made with only PLA recorded the highest apparent permeability coefficient [6.28*10(-5) (g*cm)/(cm(2)*day*hPA)];the device with PLA/PEC recorded the lowest apparent permeability coefficient [1.50*10(-5) (g*cm)/(cm(2)*day*hPA)] while the devices with PLA/CHIT and PLA/GEL exerted a similar behavior with an apparent permeability coefficient ranged between the two previous ones. Practical ApplicationsConsidering that insect infestations are one of the main causes of loss of packed foodstuffs, the results of the current work could gain great attention from the industrial sector. The proposed solutions are effective not only in releasing an active compound that could control pest infestation but also in representing eco-friendly systems.
