Recently, technologies for reproducing a 3 dimensional sound field are required for providing highly realistic sensations. Therefore, we previously proposed a system with multiple parametric array loudspeakers (PAL). PALs can design sound images on walls, ceilings, and floors by using the higher directivity of ultrasound. Thus, the proposed system can easily present incoming sound from various directions. However, it is difficult to provide a realistic sensation depending on the reverberation time. In addition, the listening area of one PAL is small. In this paper, we therefore propose two approaches for overcoming these problems. First, we propose reverberation steering with indirect electrodynamic loudspeakers and PALs. We also attempt to expand the listening area of the sound image with a curved-type PAL. As a result of evaluation experiments for each proposed approach, we could confirm the effectiveness of each approach.

The purpose of this research was the parallelization of the Wilms' Oncosimulator, an integrated cancer treatment support system modeling the growth of nephroblastoma tumors and their in vivo response to chemotherapeutic modalities. In this concept, the Oncosimulator has been optimized in order to perform efficient computations on the newest heterogeneous parallel architectures: the CPU and GPU based computing architectures. The simulator has been implemented using a novel solution for distributed computing on heterogeneous architectures - the Cactus computational toolkit with CaKernel as the module for the computations performed on computing accelerators. In this pUblication the challenges faced during the process of porting the Oncosimulator onto the aforementioned architectures (within CaKernel framework) are addressed, and the performance benefits of such approaches are analyzed. The successful parallelization of the Oncosimulator advances its computational efficiency and enhances its reusability as well as its eventual translation into clinical practice. The research was performed in the context of the p-medicine project*.

Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves in medical imaging like obstetric diagnosis, stones in kidney etc. As ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show movement of the body's internal organs as well as blood flowing through blood vessels. In this paper medical B-mode architecture of the backend system is implemented in Kintex-7 FPGA platform. The backend processing consists of envelope detection which uses fixed filter coefficients for Hilbert transformation, log compression technique to achieve the desired dynamic range for display and image enhancement technique to increase the contrast. In-phase and quadrature phase components are computed using envelope detection block, whose absolute value is compressed to fit the dynamic range of display and interpolated to avoid artifacts while displaying. Further full scale contrast stretch enhancement technique is used to improve the image clarity. The implementation of the backend algorithms along with image enhancement technique on FPGA, show that the resolution of display is improved and also the hardware resource utilization is minimized leading to compact design for portable ultrasound systems.

Background: The intravascular ultrasound (lVUS) Virtual Histology (VH) classifies the atherosclerotic plaque components, according to four classes-fibrous (FT), fibrofatty (FF), dense calcium (DC), and necrotic tissue (NC). Past works have proven a possible overestimation of necrotic content in VH images, particularly when NC is confluent to DC Additionally, NC has been used as a severity marker for atherosclerotic plaque. Aiming to observe a possible correction rule for overestimation problem, an experiment was designed Eight patients have been submitted to stent implantation (PCI). VH examinations have been performed before (PRE) and after (POS) PCl, totalizing more than 300 frames. NC content was divided into two classes: RW and RP, which corresponds, respectively, to NC confluent to DC and not confluent. Grayscale lVUS images were processed to extract normalized intensity histograms according to NC classification. Differences between intensity distributions RW and RP necrotic tissue were found, which may be useful to be considered to minimize overestimation of necrosis in VH images. These preliminary results encourage further investigation with larger sample sizes for proposing correction-imaging methods.

Materials with variable stiffness have the potential to provide a range of new functionalities, including system reconfiguration by tuning the location of rigid links and joints. In particular, wearable applications would benefit from variable stiffness materials in the context of active braces that may stiffen when necessary and soften when mobility is required. In this work, we present fibers capable of adjusting to provide variable stiffness in wearable fabrics. The variable stiffness fibers are made from shape memory materials, where shape memory alloy (SMA) is coated with a thin film of shape memory polymer (SMP). The fibers, which are fabricated via a continuous feed-through process, reduce in bending stiffness by an order of magnitude when the SMP goes through the glass transition. The transition between rubbery and glassy state is accomplished by direct joule heating of the embedded SMA wire. We employ a COMSOL model to relate the current input to the time required for the fibers to transition between stiffness states. Finally, we demonstrate how this device can be worn and act as a joint stability brace on human fingers.

Multipath routing gives traffic demands an opportunity to use multiple paths through a network. In a single-demand situation, its benefits are easy to see. In a multi-commodity case, when potentially all node-pairs (demands) generate traffic, they compete for the same network resources. In this work, we consider multipath routing in communication networks in a multi-commodity setting from a traffic engineering perspective. Based on a result from linear programming, we show that at an optimal solution, the number of demands that can have multiple paths with nonzero flows is of the order of the number of network links for three commonly used traffic engineering objectives. We introduce a multipath measure (MPM) and show that under certain traffic conditions and topological structures, the MPM is zero or close to zero;i.e., multipath routing provides little or limited gain compared to single-path routing. For the all-pair traffic case, multipath routing is observed to be advantageous for small networks. When the number of nodes is about 25 or higher and all node pairs have traffic, this advantage drops as the number of nodes in a network increases. For the fat-tree data center topology, the benefit of multipath routing also drops as the number of pods increases. Our findings are somewhat against a common belief (expressed by the term "load sharing") that multipath routing is significantly better in effective distribution of traffic over the network resources.

This paper presents the printing of resistive and interdigitated (IDE) capacitive devices for temperature and humidity sensing applications, respectively, on biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) substrates. Inkjet and gravure printing were evaluated to transfer silver-based nanoparticles inks. Flash photonic ink sintering methodologies were employed to maintain the PLA mechanical integrity due to its low glass transition temperature (58 degrees C). Between the two printing techniques investigated, gravure-printed devices on 200 mu m-thick PLA sheets were shown to have better resolution and higher sensitivities to temperature and humidity (1100 ppmK(-1) and 5.6 fF/%RH). Additionally, we demonstrated the inkjet printing of IDE onto thin (25 mu m) dissolved-PLA spin-coated substrates, to enhance the mechanical flexibility and to reduce the response time to humidity (from 238 s to 70 s). Finally, a low temperature encapsulation is proposed by embedding the printed structures within PLA sheets.

This paper presents a novel method for making ligamentous articulations for robots. Ligamentous joints are widely found in animals, but they have been of limited application in robotics due to lack of analogous synthetic materials. The method presented combines 3D printing, tow laying and thermoplastic welding which enables manufacturing of this type of structure.

The emergence of alternative technologies due to continued technology migration into the nanometer regime has led to the design of several novel logic and memory architectures. These architectures, in particular array based architectures built from crossbar structures, aim to achieve higher logic/memory densities with lower power consumption and acceptable delays as compared to present day CMOS technology. However crosstalk induced in these nanoscale arrays limits the minimum wire spacing realizable and thereby the logic density that can be achieved. In this work we analyze the crosstalk produced in sublithographic programmable logic array (PLA) architectures and propose an alternative layout scheme that reduces the effects of crosstalk in adjacent wires. The proposed methodology has an interleaved layout scheme with two non-overlapping out-of-phase clocks that prevent neighboring wires from transitioning simultaneously. Results presented in this paper indicate that this scheme provides for better tolerance against crosstalk than other structures proposed for sublithographic PLAs. The effects of different parasitics (i.e. coupling and decoupling capacitances from different parts of the crossbar segment) on the crosstalk induced are also analyzed.

This article presents the preliminary results obtained from an earlier publication of a design study performed to integrate a cellular culture bioreactor along with an external magnetic stimulation system, which was aimed at creating ideal environmental conditions that allowed for cellular culture and cellular tissue growth to take place in three dimensions, under a sterile environment favorable for the development of bioorganic grafts which were exposed to controlled electromagnetic fields. Cellular tissue was used from cellular lines of Normal Human Skin Fibroblast (NHSF) and was seeded on bio-synthetic scaffolds synthesized from polylactic acid (PLA) and Chitosan mixtures. The cellular tissue covered scaffold was then introduced into the cellular culture bioreactor, subsequently it was filled with cellular culture medium and put under dynamic flow conditions in while at the same time using the external magnetic stimulation system to irradiate the cellular tissue with controlled magnetic fields. The results present static tests of cell growth where the maximum change in growth was after 48 hours when the cells were exposed to a 1 mT, 60 Hz magnetic field; they proliferated at a rate of 52% without Chitosan, 75% with Chitosan and 53% under dynamic flow versus the non-exposed cellular tissue. These results have allowed us to continue our experimentation techniques to evaluate changes in 3-dimensional growth of magnetically stimulated tissues under dynamic flow.
