The capacity of the Photovoltaic (PV) power system is growing rapidly in the last decade. PV power systems are installed outdoors and are intended to be directly exposed to sunlight. During their operation, the PV modules are subjected to all types of climate stresses. These include temperature, UV, humidity, chemical erosion, and mechanical stresses. When the PV power systems are installed in an area where lightning events are observed, they are under the stress of direct lightning or lightning induced voltages. The focus of this research was to study the effect of lightning impulse voltages on the power output of the PV module. The paper investigated a type of 1.5 W, 6 V polycrystalline silicon PV modules. Their Maximum Power Output (MPO) were compared after they had been stressed repeatedly with different levels of lightning impulse voltages. The results revealed the MPO drops exponentially with the application of lightning impulse voltages.

The Dual Hesitant Fuzzy Sets (DHFSs) is a useful tool to deal with vagueness and ambiguity in the multiple attribute decision making (MADM) problems. The distance and similarity measures analysis are important research topics. In this paper, we propose a variety of distance measures for dual hesitant fuzzy sets, based on which the corresponding similarity measures can be obtained. We investigate the connections of the aforementioned distance measures and further develop a number of dual hesitant ordered weighted distance measures. Finally, we present a TOPSIS approach based on proposed distance measures for the weapon selection problem.

Poly(lactic acid)PLA is a biocompatible and biodegradable polyester with lactic acid being a byproduct of decomposition. PLA can be produced via processing starch, it is mechanically robust and environmentally stable and has therefore attracted interest in applications such as biomedical implants, controlled drug delivery and other kitchen variety commodity products. Making PLA electrically conductive via blending it with conducting polymers will extend its range of applications to include electronic devices and sensors. Commercial PLA has a hard grainy morphology, but is readily soluble in organic solvents and can be cast into thin films, fibers, foams or other forms. A fiber typically has a larger surface area to volume ratio compared to films and is thus technologically advantageous for sensor applications. We have successfully prepared conducting PLA/PANi nanofibers at low PLA concentrations in CHCl 3 and used it to sense alcohol vapors of increasing molecular size. The larger the size of the alcohol molecule, the longer it took for the sensor to reach saturation and the sensitivity was smaller. The sensor response times were found to be slower than the recovery times by more than two orders of magnitude for the larger alcohol molecules. Since larger molecules were not able to penetrate the fibers, they were easier to remove. The fiber sensors could be tested on various alcohols without damage and hence were reusable. Conducting PLA based nanofibers therefore present yet another means of fabricating gas sensors and that are biocompatible.

To meet the requirements of OSGi distributed processing capabilities from enterprise computing, this paper proposes a convenient way which adds distributed computing capability to OSGi framework and supports interoperation between OSGi and legacy CORBA applications. This is achieved by using CORBA dynamic technology which implements the remote service invocation capability and CORBA naming service which supports remote service discovery capability. In the end, this paper proves the distributed processing capabilities by testing our implementation in a simple scenario with a legacy CORBA application.

Oxygen cluster ion beams and/or monomer ion beams were used to investigate the sputtering and oxidation of solid surfaces such as silicon (Si) and poly-lactic acid (PLA) surfaces. For the oxygen cluster ion irradiation, the sputtered depth increased with increase of the acceleration voltage, and the sputtering yield was much larger than the value for oxygen monomer ion irradiation. Furthermore, for the oxidation process of Si and PLA surfaces, the simultaneous use of oxygen ion beams was more effective than either the cluster ion irradiation or the monomer ion irradiation.

In this paper, we present an approach for automated evaluation and generation of videogames made with PuzzleScript, a description-based scripting language for authoring games, which was created by game designer Stephen Lavelle [1]. We have developed a system that automatically discovers solutions for a multitude of videogames that each possess different game mechanics, rules, level designs, and win conditions. In our approach, we first developed a set of general level state heuristics, which estimates how close a given game level is to being solved. It is used to adapt the best-first search algorithm to implement a general evaluation approach for PuzzleScript games called GEBestFS. Next, we developed an evolutionary framework that automatically generates novel game mechanics from scratch by evolving game design rulesets and evaluating them using GEBestFS. This was achieved by developing a set of general ruleset heuristics to assess the playability of a game based on its game mechanics. From the results of our approach, we showcase that a description-based language enables the development of general methods for automatically evaluating games authored with it. Additionally, we illustrate how an evolutionary approach can be used together with these methods to to automatically design alternate or novel game mechanics for authored games.

The purpose of this research was the parallelization of the Wilms' Oncosimulator, an integrated cancer treatment support system modeling the growth of nephroblastoma tumors and their in vivo response to chemotherapeutic modalities. In this concept, the Oncosimulator has been optimized in order to perform efficient computations on the newest heterogeneous parallel architectures: the CPU and GPU based computing architectures. The simulator has been implemented using a novel solution for distributed computing on heterogeneous architectures - the Cactus computational toolkit with CaKernel as the module for the computations performed on computing accelerators. In this publication the challenges faced during the process of porting the Oncosimulator onto the aforementioned architectures (within CaKernel framework) are addressed, and the performance benefits of such approaches are analyzed. The successful parallelization of the Oncosimulator advances its computational efficiency and enhances its reusability as well as its eventual translation into clinical practice. The research was performed in the context of the p-medicine project*.

Partial discharge (PD) measurement in a needle to plane gap is suggested by IEC used for ranking dielectric liquids. This paper investigates PD behavior in eight liquids using a 20 mm ac stressed needle to plane gap. Parameters varied were tip radius, frequency and voltage. Both discharge phase distributions and pulse sequences were studied. PD occurrence was highly correlated to the frequency of the applied voltage. A higher frequency of 600 Hz gave a higher PD rate than the lower frequencies, like 60 Hz. The tip radius does also affect the PD pattern. The influences from tip radius and frequency indicate a strong correlation between space charges and PD initiation. It was observed that large positive PDs almost always was preceded and followed by a smaller negative PD in the neighboring half cycles, indicating an influence from charges of opposite polarity created in the previous half cycle. Exposing the gap to X-rays gave a PD burst for both polarities. This indicates that electrons are needed for initiation of PDs and that lack of electrons is the reason for low occurrence rate of positive PDs.

With polylactic acid (PLA) as shell and capsaicin as core substances, microcapsules were prepared based on solvent evaporation method. The orthogonal test was used to analyze the effects of the process conditions such as polyvinyl alcohol and PLA concentrations, stirring rate, and oil/water ratio on the particle size of the microencapsulated capsaicin (MC) agents. The chemical composition, morphology and size distribution of the microcapsules prepared by the most satisfactory conditions were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, laser light scattering, and scanning electron microscopy. The MC agents had a mean diameter of 3-5 mu m. The thermal properties of the MC agents were measured by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, it was demonstrated that the thermal stability of the MC agents was changed or even improved by the encapsulated PLA over the surface, when compared with similar parameters of the uncovered capsaicin. The in vitro release profile suggested that the microcapsules could be a suitable material for controlled release of capsaicin.
