This article presents a thermal analysis of a tankless heating system based on programmable logic controller (PLC) which is used to acquire and process the thermal data provided by a suitable temperature transducer. The temperature variation has been recorded during transient and steady-state conditions. The thermal analysis has been performed at different water flow and also for different thermal power. The power consumption of the tankless heating system can be decreased using an automation system based on microcontroller and PLC in the case of industrial applications.

Cyber-security is presently a hot topics targeting various applications fields such as IoT, drones, autonomous vehicles, but also industrial plants, power systems, communication infrastructure. Some dedicated academic programmes exist nowadays in the field at the bachelor and at the master levels. The paper presents a new programme in a development phase for teaching cyber-security for cyber-physical systems. One challenge of this programme is to train not only the security specialists and the network administrators, but also classical engineers, particularly in the field of automation. In this paper we present SATE, a tool aiming at increasing test efficiency of model-based testing of DES using two approaches: design-to-test and plant features. First, the design-to-test approach automatically modifies the design while maintaining the original system behavior to overcome controllability, observability and SIC-testability issues. Secondly, testing with plant features reduces the number of test cases taking into account restrictions on the input space of programmable logic controllers caused by the plant that is to be controlled. Industrial Control Systems are under increased scrutiny. Their security is historically sub-par, and although measures are being taken by the manufacturers to remedy this, the large installed base of legacy systems cannot easily be updated with state-of-the-art security measures. We propose a system that uses electromagnetic side-channel measurements to detect behavioural changes of the software running on industrial control systems. To demonstrate the feasibility of this method, we show it is possible to profile and distinguish between even small changes in programs on Siemens S7-317 PLCs, using methods from cryptographic side-channel analysis.

The Supervisory Control Theory was introduced in 1987 by Ramadge and Wonham (1987), and industrial applications are still scarce. This paper outlines an automatic code generation framework to construct the control logic for a programmable logic controller (PLC) from a symbolic, modular supervisor. The modeling and supervisor generation is performed with Supremica (Malik et al. (2017)), and the supervisor is implemented with the IEC 61131-3 programming language Structured Text. The paper reports design and development of a PLC-based controller for pneumatic pressing machine, which performs the most critical operation in an engine bearing manufacturing plant. The paper firstly overviews the manufacturing process of engine bearing and then discusses the need of automating the pneumatic press. The proposed automation system involves (a) speed control by replacing the conventional method with a variable frequency drive (VFD), (b) feeder and pusher control using PLC, (c) fault detection and safety measures, (d) and PLC-based sequential control of all the processes carried out on pneumatic press. The control system is based on MicroLogix-1000 PLC from Allen Bradley and the ladder logic program for it has been written on RSlogix-500. For the evaluation of the proposed control system, the PLC program was emulated on RSLogix Emulate-500 and the operations of the pneumatic press were simulated on FluidSIM-P. The results of simulation validate the design of PLC based controller in general and digital input-output connections of the PLC and PLC program in particular. (C) 2018 The Authors. These requirements were then addressed to mechatronic researchers and teachers. In order to enhance the link between research activities and training in the engineering school linked to the research laboratory, students projects of Master degree driven by researchers were proposed. These projects were totally multi-disciplinary, mobilizing knowledge acquired by students during their cursus in the school. The safety of machines plays an important role in an automation system. The accident of transportation system leads to delay or complete blockage of production which leads to loss. In time-sensitive production, it could lead to a defective product. To avoid such accidents collision avoidance mechanisms where implemented. The collision avoidance mechanisms are made of using sensors and by sharing status between themselves. The monorail system is an overhead transportation system which consists of a rail in which few monorail carriers run. The rail is a closed loop and the carriers run in one direction in the rail. The carriers are controlled by the floor programmable logic controller (PLC) which orchestrates the movement of the carriers through the primary Wi-Fi com- munication between them. The main task was to implement a collision avoidance mech- anism which should act when the Wi-Fi communication between the carrier and the floor PLC fails. This collision avoidance mechanism prototype is done using internet of things (IoT) devices. The IoT is a fast-growing technology with a purpose of connecting any physical devices into a network. In that network the data from the physical device can be processed or shared with similar devices. In this thesis the background information of the monorail transfer system is studied, and the major components used are explained. The different methods of wireless communi- cations were checked, and a suitable wireless communication is chosen for the collision avoidance system. Using an IoT device the PLC of the monorail carrier is connected to IoT network which is used to communicate between other carriers. By communicating using the secondary IoT network, the carriers share their position information which re- sults in collision avoidance. In this case not only avoiding collisions but also the carrier is moved to the maintenance position by the IoT device when it blocks the path of the neighboring carrier. A prototype was built and it
