About Implementation of IEC 61131-3 IL Function Blocks in Standard Microcontrollers

The paper presents considerations on implementation of function blocks of the IL language, as fragments of control programs that use these blocks. Subsequently, the predefined function blocks of the IL language have been applied to implementation in a Central Processing Unit for a programmable controller based on standard microcontroller from such families as MCS-51, AVR and ARM with the Cortex-M3 core. The considerations refer to the IL language revision that is fully compliant with the IEC-61131-3 standards. The completed theoretical analysis demonstrated that the adopted method of the module description is really reasonable and offers substantial advantages as compared to direct calls of function modules already developed as subroutines. Also the executed experiments have proved the feasibility to arrange central units of programmable controllers on the basis of standard microcontrollers and such central units may be competitive to compact CPUs available on the market for typical PLCs.

The latent heat storage system is a novel heat storage system. At the University under service conditions, it was demonstrated with a micro gas turbine (MGT) cogeneration system (CGS). Expanding the latent heat storage system into new applications is expected to save energy economically with high density energy storage and reduce exhaust emissions and reduce operational costs. This is the first demonstration of using a latent heat storage system with CGS under service condition and its characteristics are very important. In Part I, a fixed operating schedule of the system was planned and demonstrated at the University. The charge/discharge cycles of the latent heat storage system were repeated for 407 times. The energy flow test of the system shows the importance of the heat release source and total system design. In Part II, an irregular charge case of the latent heat storage system was discussed when the prime mover of the system was operated at a part load and thermal priority mode. A highly sophisticated system design that solves these problems was necessary for extending the applications of the latent heat storage system. In Part III, a temperature control schedule of the system was demonstrated during winter mornings using a new programmable logic controller (PLC). Using a fixed schedule, the MGT-CGS with latent heat storage reduced the CO2 emission when the energy utilization factor was above 50%. The temperature control schedule was considered to be better than the fixed schedule, both in terms of the operational efficiency of the overall system and CO2 reduction. The temperature control schedule was executed using an empirical formula for the temperature rise in a classroom. The restriction on the operation time by the contract with the gas supplier and the low heating capacity of the CGS affected the heating time and temperature rise. Automated test case generation for FBD programs implementing reactor protection system software

Automated and effective testing for function block diagram (FBD) programs has become an important issue, as FBD is increasingly used in implementing safety-critical systems. This work describes an automated test case generation technique for FBD programs and its associated toolFBDTester. Given an FBD program and desired test coverage criteria, FBDTester generates test requirements and invokes the Satisfiability Modulo Theories solver iteratively to derive a set of test cases. An industrial case study using reactor protection system software shows that the automatically generated test suites detected at least 82% of the known faults, whereas manually generated test cases only detected approximately 35%. Mutation analysis revealed that the automatically generated test suites substantially outperformed manually generated ones. Although test sequence generation requires some manual effort in the current FBDTester, it is apparent that the proposed approach significantly improves the efficiency and the reliability of FBD testing. RESTful M2M Gateway for Remote Wireless Monitoring for District Central Heating Networks

In recent years, the increased interest in energy conservation and environmental protection, combined with the development of modern communication and computer technology, has resulted in the replacement of distributed heating by central heating in urban areas. This paper proposes a Representational State Transfer (REST) Machine-to-Machine (M2M) gateway for wireless remote monitoring for a district central heating network. In particular, we focus on the resource-oriented RESTful M2M gateway architecture, and present an uniform devices abstraction approach based on Open Service Gateway Initiative (OSGi) technology, and implement the resource mapping mechanism between resource address mapping mechanism between RESTful resources and the physical sensor devices, and present the buffer queue combined with polling method to implement the data scheduling and Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee, and also give the RESTful M2M gateway open service Application Programming Interface (API) set. The performance has been measured and analyzed. Finally, the conclusions and future work are presented.

Increasing efforts are being made in securing the communication infrastructure used in electric power systems. On the surface, this should greatly reduce the chances of successfully executing the type of coordinated and distributed cyber attacks necessary to cause large-scale failures. However, existing communications security schemes in power control systems only consider explicit communications. In this paper, we show that there is a rich set of covert communication channels available to attackers for use in coordinating large scale attacks against power grids. Specifically, we present PHYCO, a novel covert channel that leverages physical substrates, e.g., line loads, within a power system, to transmit information between compromised device controllers. Using PHYCO, two compromised controllers that are miles apart can coordinate their efforts by manipulating relays to modify the power network's topology. This can be done without requiring the use of any explicit communication channels, e.g., power line communications, and can evade intrusion detection sensors aimed at overt traffic. We have evaluated PHYCO using real-world programmable logic controllers on a realistic simulated power grid. Our results show that PHYCO can bypass existing intrusion detection sensors as well as physical inspections by carefully crafting covert communications to have minimal exterior consequences within normal operating thresholds.

This paper presents a Man-Machine Interface (MMI) for Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) using the Cloud computing system. The proposed system differs from the traditional MMI by implementing a programmable logic controller (PLC) for manipulation. This system takes the advantage of the Qt Creator with C++ JavaScript to quickly develop drag and drop function. The system performance can be displayed on a smart phone including Android and iOS system. The preliminary operation of the proposed is tested with function capability for remote defect detection.

This paper describes the PLC based control system developed for a 40kJ/25kV Electro-magnetic machining (EMM) system. In EMM system large capacitor banks is charged with high voltage to store large energy and the banks is made to discharge into a coil within few milli-seconds using a triggered spark gaps. During discharge of the capacitor large surges and transients are generated in the system. The control system monitors/controls and interlocks all the units of the system for proper operation. The control system is the only subsystem which is eclectically connected to all the low and high voltage subsystems. Care should be taken at the signal interfacing with the control system to protect the control system.

An approach is proposed to design the programmable logic controller (PLC) for an automated guided vehicle system (AGVS), using ordinary Petri net (PN). First, it models an AGVS as a plant PN. Second, the PN supervisor is designed to firm a closed-loop PN by augmenting the plant PN. Specifically, it adds control transitions to the plant PN to control the wiring loops that are to make the vehicles stop for loadmg and unloading. The resultant closed-loop PN of an AGVS can be analyzed by PN theories. Lastly, it can translate a closed-loop PN into a ladder diagram that can be performed by a PLC. A laboratory AGVS is used to illustrate the present method.
