Conveyor belt system is one of the most common transfer systems used in industry to transfer goods from one point to another in a limited distance. It is used in industries such as the electro-mechanical/mechanical assembly manufacturing to transfer work piece from one station to another or one process to another in food industries. The belt conveyor system discussed in this paper is driven by a DC motor and two speed controllers. The PID speed controller is designed to provide comparison to the main controller which is the Adaptive Fuzzy PID Speed controller. Both controllers are implemented in a real hardware where the algorithm will be written in PLC using SCL language. The experimental result shows that Adaptive Fuzzy PID controller performs better and adapted to the changes in load much faster than the conventional PID controller. This project has also proved that PLC is capable of performing high level control system tasks.

Traditional water test method has the advantage of locating leaks can be found, the disadvantage is inefficient manual detection, labor-intensive, can not be automated testing. By analyzing pneumatic and PLC control were introduced, pneumatic system of the detection device was designed, combined with operation process of the pneumatic circuit PLC control system was designed. Through the PLC control solenoid valve opening and closing, thereby control the implementing agencies of the pneumatic circuit, the device complete each course of action to achieve the test. Application of the system has maintained the advantages of the water detection assay, achieved a semi-automated detection, increased the detection efficiency, reduced labor intensity, and easy to operate.

Adaptive Control of a Non-Cylindrical Tank

A conical tank in which the diameter changes with the tank height, allows the use of feedback control used in complex nonlinear systems, such as adaptive control. This project modified an existing system of two interacting tanks by inserting a removable solid cone into one of the tanks. This modification created two new nonlinear configurations, one of which had a discontinuity. Optimal controller settings at different depths of liquid were found by minimizing the integral of the absolute error (IAE). These settings were used by an adaptive PID controller at a different settings, comparing the results to a conventional PID tuned to that setting.

This paper presents a laboratory experiment for teaching Automation. The objective of this project is to allow the students of the Technical Engineering Schools of the University of La Laguna (Spain) to learn the theoretical and practical fundamentals of Automation Systems through a laboratory experiment based on a home automation application. Automation plays an increasingly important role in the centred of Engineering;as a result, several subjects in the curriculum plan at the Engineering School focus on this discipline. In recent years, our teaching efforts have been centred on designing appealing and modern laboratory experiments. With these practical experiments, students acquire a basic knowledge of Automation, along with complementary knowledge of the latest developments in the field. The laboratory session presented in this article draws its inspiration from the Smart Home, a recent field in applied Automation. Due to the impossibility of carrying out the control of a smart installation in a real house, a simulation experiment was designed for educational tasks. A scale model of a house was built, and all the sensors, the actuators and the control system were adapted to this scale model. A programmable logic controller was selected as the control system. The implication of failure to diagnose the faults of AC motors at the inception stage would lead to unscheduled machine down-time that can upset datelines and causes financial losses. Classical methods which involve thermal switches, overload relays, timers, magnetic contactors and programmable integrated circuits were adopted in early days. But these methods did not guarantee full protection of motor. This paper introduces new approach to condition monitoring of motors through intelligent diagnostic system based on stator current analysis and programmable logic controllers. The proposed method is validated by experiments performed on five different defect levels. Experiment results show that this technique is more accurate, cost effective, safe and provides continuous real time tracking of faults and estimates the severity through visual indication.

The power quality, mainly voltage sag performance and power factor of a distribution system have been evaluated. The analysis of voltage sag uses the Monte-Carlo procedure carried out in the Electrical Transient Analysis Program (ETAP) to construct the sag density table and to estimate the probable number of critical voltage sags per annum at a given node. These calculations have taken into account the entire system comprising the transmission, sub transmission and distribution subsystems. Also, the various improvement methods for sag performance have been suggested. To improve power factor, a scheme for automation of power factor correction using programmable logic controller (PLC) based on actual installations has been developed. For automation, Boolean logic circuit has been developed and ladder diagram has been drawn. From the ladder diagram, program for the PLC has been written.

As automated manufacturing systems become more and more complex, the need for new methodologies to improve the design and development of industrial monitoring and control solutions is becoming peremptory. programmable logic controllers (PLCs) dominates the application domain meaning that they are established as the most popular industrial controllers used in factory and shop floor. Although the capabilities of these controllers have strongly improved in the last decades, their historical background as the easy understand by the electricians who had previously worked on electrical systems has meant that the de-facto standard for the implementation of control and monitoring solution for these devices remains the ladder logic. However, to face the globalization challenges, the manufacturing companies needs to improve their productivity by reducing the costs, delivering high-quality of products with high variety and improving their responsiveness to changing market condition. Moreover productivity gains can also be achieved by reducing the life-cycle costs of manufacturing production systems implying the using of more flexible and agile approaches. In this scenario, the proposed methodology aims to provide a homogeneous and optimum process that, starting from a set of mechanical specifications and behavioural models of machines, enable the generation of industrial logic automatically ensuring the same structure and naming standard in every project and the quality of the code.

The distributed computer systems applied in industry are usually of the real-time type. In those systems the maximal system response time has to be always well known in order to ensure the functional as well as the safety parameters of the system. However, the system response time may be subject to change as a result of system development during its life cycle. As the given system grows, the response time lengthens. So it happens that in order to satisfy the real-time constraints, the response time T RES has to be reduced after the system development. One of the factors that have an influence on the T RES time, is the automata cycle of the communication system nodes. The shorter the automata cycle is, the more frequent is the data exchange between the CPU module and the communication module of the given system node, which improves the T RES value. However, having the node's application well implemented, shortening of the automata cycle may seldom be done by the application optimization. Then, the only solution would be to temporary shorten the automata cycle by execution of some of the most crucial parts of the user application. In this paper, a method for shortening the automata cycle is described.

A PLC-based modified-fuzzy controller for PWM-driven induction motor drive with constant V/Hz ratio control

In this paper, a method to develop and design a fuzzy-hybrid control on an industrial controller to control speed of an induction motor and implementing a constant V/Hz ratio control is presented. Detailed discussions on the controller for a PWM-driven induction motor drive system, the system identification for the model transfer function, and the analysis on output responses and the associated manipulated variables are presented. The control objective is to provide an effective control action to sudden changes in reference speed and/or load torque. A switching type controller consisting of two control modes are devised: a PID-type fuzzy controller consisting of a PI-type and a PD-type fuzzy controller, and a conventional MD. At the early phase of the control action, the control task is handled by the PID-type fuzzy controller. At a later phase when the absolute of error is less than a threshold value, the input of integrator at the output side is no longer given by fuzzy action but fed by the incremental PID action. In term of control action, this is an enhanced proportional and derivative action when the actual value is closed to reference. Detailed evaluations of the controller's performance based on pre-defined performance indices under several conditions are presented. The findings demonstrate the ability of the control approach to provide a viable control solution in response to the different operating conditions and requirements. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Automation of real time monitoring and controlling of a marine loading arm

Purpose - The purpose of this research is to automate the operations and real time monitoring and controlling of a marine loading arm. Design/methodology/approach - A generic control strategy to automate the operation of manually controlled marine loading arms has been developed. This strategy employs state of the art, industry standard position sensors, PLC systems, interactive human machine interface (HMI) and integrates fail-safe operation and emergency shutdown procedures. Findings - This approach satisfies all the industry safety regulations and liminates the possible risks and/or spurious trips during product loading. The overall engineering process is simpler, easier to implement and manage due to the fact the industry standard equipment and design tools have been used. Using this generic strategy, manually operated marine loading arms can be automated for effective monitoring and controlling purposes. Practical implications - It is expected that engineers around the world can benefit by this approach and will be able to design similar control equipment to automate the functionality of loading arms in their organizations. Originality/value - This work is the authors' own. Thoughts and designs belong to them and the ideas presented are completely original, developed, implemented and tested by them over years.
