A programmable logic controller (PLC) is a specialized computer like device used in industrial process control, replacing banks of electromagnetic relays. Here, the speed of a Permanent Magnet Direct Current (PMDC) motor is controlled under load condition by a PID controller simulated in the PLC Platform using the Siemens step S7 software. The PLC used is Siemens CPU224XPsi. The reason behind the PID to be implemented in the PLC program is for the system to have a better response and less error. The loading on the PMDC motor is through eddy current braking. As the loading on the motor cannot be quantified, observations were made for specific loading positions. The performance of the motor was examined under three conditions- (i) Motor without feedback and without controller, (ii) Motor with feedback without controller and (iii) Motor with feedback and controller. The performance of a PMDC motor was also studied through actual hardware implementation. Here a Peripheral Interface controller (PIC) Microcontroller is used to integrate a number of functions like optical method of measurement and display of speed of the motor, feedback and implementation of the PID controller. The transistor-based motor drive is activated by variable Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) output from the microcontroller.

This paper presents a laboratory experiment for teaching Automation. The objective of this project is to allow the students of the Technical Engineering Schools of the University of La Laguna (Spain) to learn the theoretical and practical fundamentals of Automation Systems through a laboratory experiment based on a home automation application. Automation plays an increasingly important role in the centred of Engineering;as a result, several subjects in the curriculum plan at the Engineering School focus on this discipline. In recent years, our teaching efforts have been centred on designing appealing and modern laboratory experiments. With these practical experiments, students acquire a basic knowledge of Automation, along with complementary knowledge of the latest developments in the field. The laboratory session presented in this article draws its inspiration from the Smart Home, a recent field in applied Automation. Due to the impossibility of carrying out the control of a smart installation in a real house, a simulation experiment was designed for educational tasks. A scale model of a house was built, and all the sensors, the actuators and the control system were adapted to this scale model. A programmable logic controller was selected as the control system. The implication of failure to diagnose the faults of AC motors at the inception stage would lead to unscheduled machine down-time that can upset datelines and causes financial losses. Classical methods which involve thermal switches, overload relays, timers, magnetic contactors and programmable integrated circuits were adopted in early days. But these methods did not guarantee full protection of motor. This paper introduces new approach to condition monitoring of motors through intelligent diagnostic system based on stator current analysis and programmable logic controllers. The proposed method is validated by experiments performed on five different defect levels. Experiment results show that this technique is more accurate, cost effective, safe and provides continuous real time tracking of faults and estimates the severity through visual indication.
