Fast burst synchronization is an important requirement in asynchronous communication networks, where devices transmit short data packets in an unscheduled fashion. Such a synchronization is typically achieved by means of a preamble sent in front of the data packet. In this paper, we study fast burst synchronization for power line communication ( PLC) systems operating below 500 kHz and transmitting data rates of up to about 500 kbps as it is typical in various PLC network applications. In particular, we are concerned with the receiver processing of the preamble signal and the actual design of preambles suitable for fast burst synchronization in such PLC systems. Our approach is comprehensive in that it takes into account the most distinctive characteristics of the power line channel, which are multipath propagation, highly varying path loss, and disturbance by impulse noise, as well as important practical constraints, especially the need for spectral shaping of the preamble signal and fast adjustment of the automatic gain control (AGC). In fact, we regard the explicit incorporation of these various requirements into the preamble design as the main contribution of this work. We devise an optimization criterion and a stochastic algorithm to search for suitable preamble sequences. A comprehensive performance comparison of a designed and two conventional preambles shows that the designed sequence is superior in terms of (a) fast burst synchronization in various transmission environments, (b) fast AGC adjustment, and ( c) compliance of its spectrum with the spectral mask applied to the data transmit signal. Industrial controllers such as programmable logic controllers (PLC) are industrial devices that are frequently used in process automation. Internally, they use microprocessors to execute programs written using different programming language techniques such as Ladder logic Diagrams, Function Block Diagrams and others. Since the microprocessor executes instructions sequentially, the time to execute the programs increases as the number of computationally intensive control algorithms is increased. Industrial controllers are increasingly being used in networked environments to reduce cost and for better asset management. The networking protocols used for networking in these environments often change to introduce new features and enhance existing features. These changes are primarily accomplished by adding communication modules to the PLC. The problems of increased execution time and increase in the cost of the overall control system caused by the addition of the new modules can be reduced by using programmablelogic devices such as Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). Since FPGAs are highly configurable, multiple communication/control modules can be implemented on a single device. The cost of FPGA-based systems is usually low because of the lower non-recurring engineering costs. This paper presents details of a project in which a Xilinx FPGA was used to implement a control algorithm and a serial communication protocol. The paper brings out the advantages of using a FPGA in conjunction with an industrial controller.

The paper presents a modern solution for controlling the industrial machines and the manufacturing process in a fodder producing factory. The automation system was chosen such as to allow correct control of whole plant without the need of a computer, using a single programmablelogic controller (PLC). Also some interesting software solutions, for controlling some older devices that could not be replaced because of high cost, are presented. In the paper a model-based automated approach to procedural process control software is presented. A domain-specific modelling language specialised for analysis and design of procedural process control software is described. A formal description of the language syntax is necessary in order to define a mapping function from models to programme code. Furthermore, a software modelling tool is described that supports editing of software models and automatic source code generation for programmable logic controllers as well as automatic documentation generation.

Abstract This work presents challenges and solutions for the teaching and learning of automation applied to integrated manufacturing by means of a methodological approach based on techniques, tools and industrial equipment directly applicable in the industry. The approach was implemented in a control and automation engineering course divided into expositive and laboratory classes. Since the success of the approach is mainly from the practical activities, the article focus more on activities developed in laboratory than theorical classes.
