The programmable logic controllers (PLCs) users are complacent with their suppliers and the products they offer and more than 90% of them plan to buy as many more PLCs in the next one year. The PLC users are also interested in programmable automation controllers (PACs) which are rugged PCs in a PLC form factor, and 40% of the respondents are considering using PACs for automation control. When interconnecting PLCs to larger control systems, use of the Ethernet physical layer was one of the solutions being cited by 85% of respondents of the survey. The new PACSystems RX3i controller is the latest addition to the PACSystems family of PACs and features one control engine and universal programming environment to provide application portability across multiple hardware platforms. Equipment life cycles involve machine building, commissioning, on-site upgrading and fault finding. This paper deals with an efficient and fault-tolerant control system for the pilot wastewater treatment plant operated at the CSCI group. A SolfPLC, rather than a standard industrial PLC, is used because it provides much more flexibility when performing experimental studies. On the other hand, this is a biotechnological pilot-plant and it is imperative to provide round-the-clock and fault-tolerant control. Otherwise, the biomass may degrade rapidly, thus making it unusable. The presented control system consists of a main program running on a PC computer and a shadow program running on the FieldPoint real-time controller. The shadow program monitors the main program and if a failure is sensed, it takes over control of the process. Other mechanisms are implemented in order to ensure a proper cooperation between the main and the shadow program.

In conjunction with Creative Pultrusions, Inc., a fiberglass reinforced polymer composites manufacturer in Alum Bank, PA, a senior project was designed to convert the machine operation code for their pultruders from the Rockwell Automation's RSLogix500 software to the RSLogix5000 software. This project was a capstone design for the Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Penn State Altoona. The specific aim was to show the benefits of RSLogix5000 while improving the pultruding system at Creative Pultrusions, Inc. By streamlining the existing code, troubleshooting could become more efficient. In order to convert the code, a complete understanding of the pultrusion process was necessary along with that of both the RSLogix500 software and RSLogix5000 software. This document will discuss background information pertaining to Creative Pultrusions, Inc., RSLogix500 software and RSLogix5000 software in addition to the machine code conversion and testing processes.

UniSim is a graphical tool which can be used to avoid the choice of a specific commercial platform when teaching the IEC 61131-3 standard for programmable logic controllers. UniSim allows to develop automation software which is fully compliant with the standard, and to validate it via simulation. It can also be used to fast prototyping automation systems using a desktop equipped with low-cost commercial I/O boards. This prototype can be interfaced with a plant simulator to perform hardware-in-the-loop validation of the control system.

The reduction of power consumption for system-on-a-chip (SoC) at every aspect of design flow is discussed. The challenge for designers is choosing the most suitable power-management technique that delivers the target QoS while minimizing the cost and risk associated with methodology changes. The techniques which can be added to the traditional design flow without changing the way the tools work are : global concurrent optimization of timing, area, and power;leakage optimization methods;hierarchical clock gating and low-power clock-tree synthesis. Power reduction from these techniques is limited and more advanced techniques are required. Multiple power domains and power shut-off methods can minimize both active and leakage power in a broad range of designs. Multiple domains can conserve power in virtually any SoC if one simply run some domains at a lower supply voltage and switching off power to a block helps in reducing both dynamic and leakage power.

Automata formalism has been used extensively in control design of Discrete Event Systems (DES) and, realization methodologies to implement automata that are synthesized using formal methods are needed. In this study, we present a methodology that can be used to express a given automaton in logical domain. Using this methodology, a Matlab program which automatically generates programmablelogic Controller (PLC) codes that realize the given automaton has been developed.
