Some users have utilized the PLC for PA since the first half of the 1980s;however, it started to be used broadly in late 1990's. At the beginning, the PLC-based process controller was used for only small-scale batch plants. As the introduction records increases, the application of PLC-based process controller has expanded. The duplex controller system accelerated the application expansion and the PLC-based process controller is introduced for continuous operation plants, these days. In this writing, I will introduce some concrete application cases of PLC based process controller for PA. the evolution concept of Omron's PLC "Smart Platform", and the concept of PLC-based process controller "SMARTPROCESS".

In the field of process instrumentation and control field. EI integrated functionality and excelled cost per performance furnished "PLC instrumentation system" has been expanding the application field where mid to small DCS traditionally has been serving. It is expected that PLC instrumentation system could be deployed rapidly for environmental satellite control such as utility/waste water control and monitoring particularly in pulp and paper factories. We have developed the pH control system to overcome non linear process characteristics by adding fuzzy control function as an advanced control to PLC instrumentation system and applying continuous flow pump for the actuator. We expect that these technologies could be utilized as key for the environment monitoring/waste water processing system, which are expected to be replaced actively hereafter.

Paper deals with industrial applications of Laboratory of Rockwell Control systems that is located in the Department of Control and Measurement Instrumentation of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication of the Brno University of Technology. First part of the paper is dedicated to presentation of the IIW/SW configuration of Laboratory and enumeration of Laboratory activities in education of student and professional courses for industry. In the second part of the contribution there are described advanced tests of soft - starter and AC drive for testing of electrical engines after seismic tests. Such activities create important part of Laboratory utilization as a link between university staff and students on one side and specialists from praxis on the other side in the field of common research, development and engineering works. The last part of the paper deals with outlook in an innovative project of laboratory activities.

The features of programmable-automation controllers (PAC) such as CompactRIO from National Instruments are presented. The controllers use embedded technologies for implementing reactive architectures, that takes the form of a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). FPGA chips contain thousands of logic gates that interconnect via programming to create specific logic patterns or functions. FPGAs are designed to incorporate reactive behavior and respond quickly in control systems and require expertise in hardware description language (HDL) or in complex design tools, that can rapidly process and deterministically generate synchronized analog and digital signals.

To apply a real-time kernel based programmablelogic Controller (PLC) to safety-critical applications including a nuclear power plant, a software qualification of the PLC is regarded as a very difficult and time-consuming task due to not only the complexity of the embedded software but also the criteria and requirements for a software qualification of safety-critical applications. The BTP HICB-14 of NUREG-0800, Regulatory Guide 1.168 and 1.152, and IEEE Std. 7-4.3.2 and 1012 should be referenced to qualify a software or software-based component for a nuclear safety-critical system or equipment in Korea. We plan to resolve this problem by applying matured techniques and their tools based on the principles of a software engineering to efficiently carry out the activities such as a software verification and validation, software safety analysis, and software configuration management for the PLC. The matured techniques such as a review and inspection, formal verification, traceability analysis, HAZard OPerability (HAZOP), and software inspection and testing are supported or automated by using various tools such as the Fagan's Inspection method, Statemate MAGNUM's ModelChecker/ModelCertifier, Nuclear Software Engineering Environment (NuSEE), HAZOP checklists, and Cantata++. This approach has been successfully applied to qualify system software of the PLC (called POSAFE-Q) and it will contribute to raising the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) level 3 estimated at the initial stage of the KNICS project to a CMM level 5. This approach can be easily extended to other safety-critical applications such as in the railways, military, medicine, etc.

A proxy device is developed that can be placed between two devices with RS-232 interfaces to monitor and help arbitrate traffic between them according to a program the operator has entered. The device can respond in nearly real-time, at a much higher rate and help the operator do experiments and test hypothetical fixes without the operator having to actually commit those fixes to the device under test. It has the potential to save the operator development iterations and additional steps in order to implement or test a behavior change. The microcontroller in the proxy device executes firmware and interprets scripts from internal electrically erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM). The proxy device can also be programmed via its scripts or firmware to not pass through or to substitute some signals.

The first programmable logic controllers (PLCs) emerged in the 1970s. These PLCs offered the advantages of relay ladder logic emulation, and direct connectivity to data logging and HMI screens. However, unlike the relay circuits they emulated, PLCs outputs were roughly equally likely to fail on as off. With their poor performance, organizations abandoned the use of analogue PLCs. In the mid 1980s, the second generation of PLCs were introduced. It became possible to maintain both Dual Leg 2oo2 voting Basic Process Control Systems (BPCs) logic solvers and 2oo3 voting Safety Instrumented System (SIS) logic solvers in uninterrupted service virtually independently. At the same time, testing and certification have been increasingly delegated to third party agencies. With the increasing regulations of plants by government authorities, assuring fail safe operation of PLCs became more important. This brought about the development of IEC61508 standard for functional safety. The standard has seven parts. PLC solver manufacturers need to meet the requirements of Part 2 (hardware) and Part 3 (software) to successfully enter the market.
