In industrial control systems the Ethernet based communication is gaining a more dominant role. For several tasks and subsystems of the TTF VUV-FEL (Vacuum-Ultraviolet Free Electron Laser at DESY) PLCs (programmable logic controllers) are used in reliable low level controls. These PLCs are connected via TCP/IP communication to DOOCS [2] (Distributed Object Oriented Control System). A class library on the DOOCS server side implements the interface to the PLC. It contains functions for the TCP/IP communication and the methods to exchange different data structures of a PLC. The developed class library allows script based server generation for different PLC applications. The DOOCS server processes are running on Unix/Linux computers. In case of problems, the network-debugging on Unix/Linux computers is easy. There are many network analyzing tools available. This paper also discuses the error handling and TCP/IP configuration. At start-up or after connection lost special precautions have to be taken to resynchronize and to protect the valid data. TCP/IP configuration parameters are online available as well as communication statistics.

programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are widely used in agricultural production and processing. Thus, agricultural systems management students should receive hands-on experience with these devices as part of their undergraduate education. However, in many cases, the cost of providing class-quantity PLCs for student laboratory use is prohibitive. This article describes a lowcost PLC trainer developed for use in a university-level agricultural electricity course. A sample laboratory activity used with the PLC trainer is also described.

The development of control related applications requires knowledge of different subject matters like mechanical components, control equipment and physics. To understand the behavior of these heterogeneous applications is not easy especially the students who begin to study the electronic engineering. In order to introduce to them the most common components and skills necessary to put together a functioning automated system, we have designed a simple elevator model controlled by a PLC which was designed based on a microcontroller.

Sublithographic programmablelogic Arrays can be interconnected and restored using nanoscale wires. Building on a hybrid of bottom-up assembly techniques supported by conventional lithographic patterning, we show how modestsized PLA logic blocks, which are efficient for implementing logic, can be organized into a segmented, Manhattan mesh interconnection scheme. The resulting programmable architecture has a macro-scale view which is reminiscent of lithographic FPGA and CPLD designs despite the fact that the low-level, sublithographic fabrication techniques used are much more highly constrained than conventional lithography and are prone to high defect rates. Using the Toronto 20 benchmark set, we begin to explore the design space for these sublithographic architectures and show that they may allow us to exploit nanowire building blocks to reach one to two orders of magnitude greater density than 22nm CMOS lithography. This session reviews some techno-economic research and commercialization issues for PLC/BPL by way of a number of PC based spreadsheet modeling examples. The examples are aimed at illustrating the dependencies, interactivity and trends in a variety of related techno-economic data. The session will begin with a paper presentation which aims to illustrate examples of the modeling concepts and to stimulate debate. This will be followed by an open forum chaired by an independent R&D consultancy with panel members from the FCC, IEEE, Industry, and Academic Research Leaders.
