This paper deals with the implementation of a self-tuning controller into a PLC (programmablelogical Controller) library A nonlinear model of the process is approximated by a continuous-time external linear model. The parameters of the CT external linear model are estimated via parameters of a corresponding delta model. The control system configuration with two feedback controllers is considered. The controller design is based on the polynomial approach. The resulting proper controllers ensure stability of the control system as well as asymptotic tracking of the step reference and step load disturbance attenuation. The control algorithm was implemented into the Tecomat PLC library, product of Teco, Inc. The laboratory tests proved that the algorithm implementation was successful. Functionality of implementation was verified by a furnace model.

When developing mechatronic systems it is important to consider the control, electrical and mechanical aspects throughout the development process. The new VDI guideline 2206 [1] provides a useful frame for the design of any kind of mechatronic system. This work describes a customization of that guideline when focusing on the development of systems controlled by a programmablelogic Controller (PLC). Predefined process modules are defined, relevant methods and tools are identified, and the interdisciplinary data flow is described. The relevance of the methods and tools used in the work is demonstrated by an industrial case study. The case study shows the possibilities for an improved product development process using the enhanced methodology presented in this paper. However, the data flow needs to be further detailed and automated to be more efficient. The enhanced methodology developed in this work is a promising base for an efficient development process for mechatronic systems controlled by a PLC.

In industrial praxis, the design of logiccontrollers often follows a manual, iterative, and nonformalized procedure. It leads to control code with a relatively high risk of containing design flaws, which have to be detected by extensive testing. This contribution proposes a method that collects the relevant requirements systematically, translates the specifications in control components largely automated, describes the dependencies between different components using formal models and hierarchy, and supplements (or substitutes) test runs for controller validation by a combination of simulation and algorithmic analysis.

A controller for the on-line tuning of PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) parameters based on the satisfactory degree and genetic algorithm is proposed. With the theory of satisfactory solution, the satisfactory functions of over-shoot, rise time and setting time of the system response are designed, and the three parameters kp, ki and kd of the PID controller are obtained by means of genetic algorithm. These three parameters are used as the base values for the on-line tuning of PID parameters. Then, by designing the nexus functions between the tracking error and kp, ki, kd, the PID controller parameters are adjusted online, thus improving the static performance, dynamic performance and robust performance of the control system. The results of Matlab simulation show that the proposed PID controller is valid.

In this paper, the application of the Hierarchical Interface-based Supervisory Control method to controlling a large scale manufacturing example is presented adopting a layered organizational hierarchy of a factory. The generic and easily maintainable implementation using programmable logic controllers, a personal computer and TCP/IP over Ethernet for communication is explained in detail. To assess the controlled plant performance, business parameters are estimated using a throughput diagram and utilized to derive directions for further improvement.
