A new cutter sorter control system "ASP-5000C" was developed consisting of a programmablelogic controller (PLC) of "CYSMAC CS1 Series", produced by Omron Field Engineering Corp. It substituted the former cutting control system consisted of a single board computer for high speed operation and having restrictions in computer language, man-machine interface, computer communication, and customization. The new control system resolved such restrictions. The concept, outline, characteristics, functions, and prospects of the new system were discussed.

The economic growth of five main companies in the roller coaster industry with the help of programmablelogic device (PLD) specialists is discussed. These specialists have already posted a sequential revenue increase of 10.3% in the first quarter in the year 2004. The primary difference between yesterday and today's PLD market is the forced shift from an industry almost completely dependent upon application segment, communications, to one that is much more broadly based. The revenue increase in these companies represent a much more sustainable type of growth.

Thanks to the Internet technology, there have been many distance learning (web-based) courses offered by academic institutes around the world nowadays through the Internet. And these courses have benefited many students who might be constrained by distance and time. Nevertheless, most web-based courses are "lecturing courses" that cannot fulfill the need for engineering technology education. In this paper, we propose hardware/software architecture for a web-based distance laboratory for programmable logic controllers (PLCs). This Web-based PLC Lab allows the laboratory facilities shared among several academic institutes and can be accessed by registered students to practice PLC experiments at their own home, enhancing the quality of education without much increasing in the overall cost. With the help of web cameras, the students can even observe the live video of PLC experiments through the Internet.

The first group is very content with the PLCs and have an endless supply to technicians and engineers who know PLC and they believe that supply of PLC will never run out. The second group of automation people is not comfortable with their humongous piles of PLC and they believe that it is costly and the technology is outdated and closed. The Generalized Predictive Controller (GPC) belongs to the general class of predictive controllers. The authors have proposed an alternative (although equivalent) formulation for the GPC in state space. This formulation is based on a robust observer, and the poles selection is closely related to the controller robustness. An important feature of predictive controllers consists of their ability to take explicitly into account hard constraints in their formulation. However, their design must be accompanied by a guarantee of feasibility. There are some papers which deal with this problem, although all of them suppose that the state of the process can be measured on-line. However, in some cases, the design of the GPC proposed by the authors cannot measure online the process states since they are artificial states, that is to say, not related to physical magnitudes. The authors in paper extend the results of to the GPC in the case where all the states are online measurable. So the state estimation will be presented employing the same ideas of this previous work. When the states have to be observed with the robust observer proposed, the authors show that there appears in the analysis a linear but time varying system perturbed with the error in the initial estimation of states. This initial error belongs to a known and bounded set. The main result states that if it is possible to find a collection of non-empty sets Kj that converge to the maximal robust control invariant set when j increases, the feasibility of GPC control law is guaranteed for all the sampling instants. Finally, this result is verified in a numerical example with a 2 states process.
