A Web-based system that includes educational simulations and an intelligent tutoring system has been developed to teach students about programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The system uses Visual Basic, a Microsoft Access database, and Macromedia Flash: and is hosted using Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS). An Access database is used to store domain specific knowledge and model student knowledge, and an algorithm asks questions adaptively based on the student model, so that each student receives an individualized practice session. The student interface is easy-to-use and provides detailed feedback about practice question performance and status. Lessons on PLC timer and counter instructions were evaluated by 38 undergraduate manufacturing engineering students. Students made statistically significant learning gains as a result of taking the lessons, and rated them positively in terms of ease of use and understanding, clear objectives, amount of interaction, ability to motivate, relevance, and pace.

The theory of open loop programmable control engineering has been applied successfully in industrial process control. Usually, process engineers, having no experience in control engineering, have to design the control sequences needed for applications in industrial plants. They need development tools supporting the design of the control on the process technology level and the automatic generation of the control programs. A high degree of confidence in the correctness of the automatic generation of the control programs is necessary. The formal verification of the software, which generates the control programs, is the only way to achieve the needed confidence. The paper shows the background and the application SPAS, a successful computer aided engineering tool which has been developed by the authors at the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences. The introduced software tool can be applied for both the PLC-development and the technologically based design. Moreover it gives an introduction to the visual design of automation control systems. programmablelogic controller (PLC) technology is central to the development of modem automated manufacturing systems. However, due to limited equipment availability, high student/faculty ratios, limited lab access, and limited resources to support students outside labs and the classroom, many educational institutions do not provide the resources necessary to help students to become proficient with PLC technology. To alleviate some of these problems, an Integrated Virtual Learning System (IVLS) is being developed to teach about PLCs. The IVLS will be used to teach information students need to know about equipment before using it, so that lab time can be spent more productively and efficiently. In addition, unlike a human instructor, it will be available anytime, anywhere there is a computer connected to the Internet. IVLS lessons have thus far been developed to teach PLC applications;information flow from an external input device to a PLC processor image table to output devices;and PLC timer instructions. Three different timer instructions-Timer-on Delay (TON), Timer-Off Delay (TOF) and Retentive Timer On (RTO)-are covered. The lessons were developed using a combination of intelligent tutoring system, animation and presentation development tools. An evaluation of the lessons on timer instructions was conducted with 90 undergraduate manufacturing engineering students. Students made statistically significant learning gains as a result of taking the lessons, and rated them positively in terms of ease of use and understanding, clear objectives, amount of interaction, ability to motivate, relevance, and pace.

The component application flexibility and affordability of PC-based Ethernet programmable logic controllers (PLC) system are discussed. The implementation of the transition from PLC technology to a PC-based automation control system for its 40 lines producing cross link polyethylene piping products is also discussed. The package included Ethernet TCP/IP bus terminals, couplers, plus related inductrial computers and touch screens. Beckhoff's BK 9000 series controller is also described. It is PC-based and uses Ethernet architecture.

The aim of this paper is to show the simulation, emulation and diagnostic possibilities of several industrial controllers and tools installed in our laboratories as well as the possibilities of exploitation of this simulation in the SCADA/HMI design, testing and in the teaching of SCADA/HMI design principles. This paper presents a methodology to successfully implement the controllers of electrical drives on FPGA devices. This methodology has been applied to design two controller structures for a DC motor: a cascade IP controller and a Luenberger observer with a state feedback. Experimental results show the performances of the designed controllers.
