The changeover from programmablelogic controller (PLC) to programmable automation controller (PAC) is discussed. It is found that PACs are capable of multi-domain functions including logic, motion, drives and process on single platform. They use de-facto standards like OPC and XML for inter-operability and facilitates modularity in materials handling systems, creating individual cells of automation. They bring a new level of computing and controlling power to smaller devices than traditional PLCs, providing full control capability.

System designers use CPLDs (complex programmablelogic devices) for logic integration and implementation of control logic. A dynamic full-chip power integrity analyzer that goes beyond IR-drop tools is discussed. Tomahawk-SDL that quickly identifies and analyzes dynamic 'hot spots' on an systm on chip (SoC) is also discussed. The CBI's monthly industrial trends survey in March 2003 showed a further decline in output expectations, and this followed a period of weak demand. The sales of PLC is a reasonable indicator of the level of investment in manufacturing, with at least one of these devices finding its way into almost anything that requires automated control. The figures of Siemens Automation & Drives for the number of units shipped and, considering the supposedly downbeat nature of UK industry, the bottom line is quite staggering.

The process applications offered by programmablelogic Controller (PLC) by reliable and cost control ways were discussed. It is observed that the nano PLC's with upto 32 I/O gain networking capability and micro PLC's gain more sophisticated functionality. A study from ARC suggests that the PLC's that provides sophisticated motion and position control software, and web-enabled functionality, and remote troubleshooting should be used. The two real-world applications in the materials that follows of current PLC technology are NEXTChem Process analyzers and a PLC with an Entivity WinPLC CPU in its process analyzers .
