There is an ironic, but very common occurrence in factories today. The Information Systems (IS) manager can, from his desk, tell whether any printer worldwide is out of paper - but he cannot tell if the production machine in the next room is even running (much less determine production data). A large amount of time, energy, and money has been spent on implementing and improving the information infrastmcture within manufacturing organizations. The emergence of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) as indispensable components has provided important cost savings and productivity improvements. Using PCs for machine control provides plants with an opportunity that is very difficult to realize using traditional PLC technology. The PC is already a natural part of the information systems. When PCs are also the direct control platforms, they provide very detailed information about the plant floor itself. This information is very valuable to the rest of the production systems. The direct linking of the machines building products with the systems planning resource usage provides management with levers they would not otherwise have. These levers can be used to directly improve production efficiency and productivity-and therefore the bottom line.

A laboratory program is described that was developed in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Michigan Technological University. The program introduces undergraduate students to concepts of discrete-event control and the application to factory automation. The primary emphasis is placed on various programming concepts using state-transition techniques, and the utilization of this methodology is shown to produce a very understandable and systematic description of sequential control functions (that may include concurrent or hierarchical control). The students use computers and controllers to implement small versions of realistic manufacturing tasks.

A microcontroller-based programmable temperature controller developed using an RTD sensor is described. A resistance-to-time converter is employed to obtain a time-interval linearly varying with the sensor resistance. Using a counter of the microcontroller and suitable software, temperature under control is determined and compared with a target temperature. The resulting error, through a DDC implementation of PID algorithm, is used to control the firing angle of an SCR for controlling the power applied to heater. Experimental results are given in support of the scheme proposed.

Built upon the direct control architecture, the Reconfigurable Mechanisms for Application Control (RMAC) architectural framework is described in reference [1]. This companion paper describes several applications that are of historical significance to the RMAC architecture and also shows the flexibility and simplicity of direct control reconfiguration. We first present two direct control applications that have encouraged RMAC development. The first application describes the reconfiguration of a large 3-axis mill into a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), where the popular PC-DMIS CMM planning software uses a device driver interface to plan and control inspection processes on the mill directly, without process plan conversion to typical machine control languages. Second, a robot is converted into a rapid prototyping commercial application, using direct control of the robot from popular CAD/CAM systems. RMAC flexibility is then demonstrated on a 3-axis prototype mill by reconfiguring the mill as either a 3-axis sculpting mill or as a 2-axis router. The RMAC software and interface components are considered in detail.

The Internet broadens control and automation possibilities. As manufacturers develop hardware and software that comply with transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) standards, automation climbs to new heights. These systems allow engineers to take an application from one location to the next without modification. Many programmable logic controllers (PLC) are available with communications coprocessor modules. Some PLCs have all communications options built into either the central processing unit (CPU) or the power supply. Others offer basic communication through the CPU or power supply but allow a communications coprocessor module to be added for more sophisticated options.
