Today, the I/O and the controllers are being distributed throughout the plant closer to the point of application. In distributed control applications, the process is divided into autonomous units, with each unit having a separate controller. By partitioning the control functions, the other areas of the process can still continue to run without interruption in cases where the controllers go down. In this study, the technologies making effective distributed control possible are explored and the future of programmablecontrollers in distributed control is discussed.

The programmablelogic controller (PLC) was first introduced in 1969 to replace hardwired relay control panels, and used highly reliable solid-state components. The PLC was designed for harsh industrial environments, with a programming language most engineers and technicians are familiar with and use in thousands of applications - the relay ladder logic (RLL). Many functions, however, don't lend themselves to the limitations imposed by the conventional design. Those robots that feed LCDs in LCD manufacturing processes are called carrying robots. In general, programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are used as control components in semiconductor manufacturing equipment. PLCs not only have higher processing speeds compared to other control systems and complex functions and can easily cope with various forms of functional changes but also are very conveniently maintained. Ladder diagrams (LDs) are the most frequently used as control programs to drive PLCs. However, a sequential function chart (SFC) is used to complement shortcomings of LD programs. Advantages of these SFC programs are easily understandable control flows and easy maintenance. In the present study, a method of controlling carrying robots in LCD manufacturing processes using SFC language was developed and the validity of the method was checked.

The changeover from programmablelogic controller (PLC) to programmable automation controller (PAC) is discussed. It is found that PACs are capable of multi-domain functions including logic, motion, drives and process on single platform. They use de-facto standards like OPC and XML for inter-operability and facilitates modularity in materials handling systems, creating individual cells of automation. They bring a new level of computing and controlling power to smaller devices than traditional PLCs, providing full control capability.
