This paper discusses how the topic of programmable logic controllers was added to an existing senior level course in the mechanical engineering program at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. A two week "PLC" experience was implemented based on the use of AllenBradley Pico PLCs and the PicoSoft application software. Additionally two different laboratory demonstration stations were built in-house to provide a "hands-on" control experience for students. This paper talks about how the "PLC" experience has been implemented and how well it has been received as part of the mechatronics course.

These specialists have already posted a sequential revenue increase of 10.3% in the first quarter in the year 2004. The primary difference between yesterday and today's PLD market is the forced shift from an industry almost completely dependent upon application segment, communications, to one that is much more broadly based. Whether to opt for the solid logic of a programmablelogic controller (PLC) or an open personal computer (PC)-based controller depends on the size and nature of the application. The difference between a PC and a PLC is essentially functional: PLC's primary task is to process logic in a deterministic manner. PLCs have dominated industrial control applications. However, PCs offer many advantages that are hard to resist. These include: faster performance, sophisticated development tools, availability of software products and I/O products, and competitive costs. A PC-based system would be more beneficial if more than half the I/O is analog. Otherwise, if more than half is digital, a PLC is probably the best answer.

Thanks to the Internet technology, there have been many distance learning (web-based) courses offered by academic institutes around the world nowadays through the Internet. And these courses have benefited many students who might be constrained by distance and time. Nevertheless, most web-based courses are "lecturing courses" that cannot fulfill the need for engineering technology education. In this paper, we propose hardware/software architecture for a web-based distance laboratory for programmable logic controllers (PLCs). This Web-based PLC Lab allows the laboratory facilities shared among several academic institutes and can be accessed by registered students to practice PLC experiments at their own home, enhancing the quality of education without much increasing in the overall cost. With the help of web cameras, the students can even observe the live video of PLC experiments through the Internet.

This device can replace one or both flaggers during the two lane closures on the event of a road construction. The road construction safety traffic light system is considered one of the best devices in work zone traffic flow control systems. The device is a portable traffic light unit which can be best utilized in controlling traffic flow in a road construction site for long term or short term lane closures and to control two-way traffic in a single lane. By implementating new technologies in automating traffic flow in road construction site could possibly eliminate the usage of a conventional flagman at all times.
