Designing advanced control systems is a challenging task that requires the integration of numerous simulations and experiments into the design decision-making process. Unfortunately, controls courses are often focused on theory and do not provide students with knowledge, or practical experience, of how to actually implement controllers. programmable logic controllers (PLC) are often used in industrial applications. PLCs continue to improve their computational abilities and are nowadays capable of running codes generated with MATLAB/Simulink. A two-week curriculum was added to a graduate controls course to teach students operational techniques and programming of PLCs. Students developed skills necessary to design a controller using logic operations, logic gates, PLC programming, and a Human Machine Interface (HMI). The curriculum required the programming of a PLC and HMI to control automated test equipment with electro-pneumatic components.

The advantages and disadvantages of PC-based control and programmablelogic controller (PLC) control in relation to industrial control are discussed. PLCs employed rigid control architectures and simple instruction sets to make digital operations reliable and simple to program. PC-based industrial control had weaknesses such as, they were not stable, the rotating magnetic hard drives were not reliable, and they had a unfamiliar programming environment. The new controllers designed to address the 20% applications combine the best PLC features such as, multidomain functionality, single multidiscipline development platform, software tools that allow design by process flow, and open, modular architectures that mirror industry applications.

The paper deals with black-box identification of industrial automated discrete manufacturing systems. The problem of obtaining Petri net (PN) models from the observable behavior, expressed as a sequence of input-output vectors, is addressed. First the problem is stated: important issues to handle in systems automated by programmable logic controllers that cannot be dealt by other methods are detailed. It is observed that the nano PLC's with upto 32 I/O gain networking capability and micro PLC's gain more sophisticated functionality. Increasing complexity and decreasing time-to-market require changes in the traditional way of building automation systems. The paper describes a novel approach to automatically generate the Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens for component-based manufacturing cells based on their corresponding virtual models. Manufacturing cells are first prototyped and commissioned within a virtual engineering environment to validate and optimise the control behaviour. A framework for reusing the embedded control information in the virtual models to automatically generate the HMI screens is proposed. Finally, for proof of concept, the proposed solution is implemented and tested on a test rig.
