Control applications contain both logic, sequencing, and control algorithms. A holistic view of this is seldom presented in teaching and papers. One reason is the separation of communities - automation groups typically come from the programmablelogic Controller (PLC) world while control engineers primarily come from the Distributed Control System (DCS) world. Both logic, sequencing, and control algorithms are, however, well integrated in today's control systems since DCS systems now contain logic and sequencing and PLCs now contain control algorithms. This paper shows that both logic, sequencing, and control algorithms can be integrated seamlessly in a sequential control language. The particular application considered is a PID controller with a relay autotuner. The presented autotuner implementation yields good controller parameters and is freely available.

Impulsive noise (IN) consists of sudden short time peaks of high power which appear in communication channels from time to time. The IN influence on Power Line Communications (PLC) has been proved to be very harmful. A particular feature of PLC standards is the prohibition of signal power transmission at the frequency bands used by radio amateurs, which are referred to as the masked tones;however when IN arrives at the receiver, it is expected some IN leakage into these masked tones in the same way as into the rest of the PLC spectrum. We present an IN cancelling method which removes the IN from the received signal by analyzing the IN components at the masked tones.

In this paper an approach to support the development process of closed-loop control software for programmable logic controllers (PLC) is shown. To enhance the development process, a fast and reliable data transfer between different tools and models used during different design phases is realized by model transformation. A core model created using the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) and a corresponding model editor based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) in combination with a newly realized model transformation from the SysML parametric diagram to the Simulink block diagram is used to integrate the information from different engineering tools and models involved during automation engineering design phases. Advanced control algorithms such as optimization-based controls are known to offer superior performance as well as systematic constraints handling when compared to classical control strategies. However, the complexity of such advanced control methods makes their implementations difficult, especially on controllers with limited computational capacity such as the programmable logic controllers (PLC). This paper presents the capability of a low-cost low-end PLC for online computation of advanced control. In particular, an online quadratic program within the framework of input-constrained internal model control is implemented, and the effectiveness is illustrated using a hardware-in-the-loop experiment.

Using the Power Distribution Network (PDN) concurrently as a data bus with Power Line Communications (PLC) technology provides an interesting solution for reducing the complexity, weight and volume of electrical systems in commercial aircraft. The European Union project TAUPE has recently completed an investigation on the use of PLC in commercial aircraft. A Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of four was reached and significant weight and complexity savings were demonstrated. Extensive functional and performance tests have been performed for two cabin reference applications in a representative demonstrator. The measurements were performed with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) PLC equipment based on a state-of-the-art industry standard. A detailed analysis of the results showed a number of deficiencies in applying COTS technology, which has been developed primarily for consumer in-home multimedia distribution, to avionics systems. This paper will provide an analysis of the deficiencies identified during testing as well as present a set of guidelines to aid the way forward for further development towards reaching a higher TRL with PLC which has become well established in the consumer market, but has yet to reach its full potential for avionics applications.

In this paper we discuss the technical requirements for communication solution to build the access networks of smart grid applications, and we analyse the deployment of the ICT infrastructure. For the investigations in this paper we focus on the high-speed narrowband Power Line Communications (PLC). First, we discuss the quality of service requirement imposed by the mostly used application for the distribution grid. Then, we give an overview about the current PLC implementations in Europe. The PLC deployment architecture is described, with the role of different PLC systems. After that, the deployment of PLC networks is discussed;covering network design, cost modelling and tool to assess different technology scenarios.

UniSim is a graphic tool that can be used to develop and validate portable automation software, which fully complies with the IEC 61131-3 standard. UniSim is based on a graphical editor and on a simulation engine which allows to perform off-line validation of the automation software. Its simulation engine can also be interfaced with off-the-shelf I/O boards, in order to fast prototype automation systems by using a Personal Computer. Hardware-in-the-loop validation can be performed interfacing the prototype with the real plant or with an emulator. Furthermore, UniSim adopts the new XML Formats for IEC 61131-3, which provides an open interface for data exchange among different systems. Thanks to this choice the code developed with UniSim can be easily ported among different commercial platforms, increasing software reusability. Although the current release of UniSim is a work in progress version, it is already available at [1] and it can be effectively used to develop small and medium automation size projects.

A model for image and data pre-processing and communication between a dedicated PC and a PLC with Neural Network (NN) application is proposed in this paper. The proposed model defines guidelines for creating a multithreaded application for receiving real-time data from several digital cameras, parallel image pre-processing based on predefined user algorithms, calculation of input data vector for NN and sending the input vector to the PLC NN application. The model was developed and verified in the laboratory "Intelligent Manufacturing Systems" at the Technical University of Sofia.
