The diagnosis of electrical motors through the detection of fault frequency signatures in the current's spectrum has become an established standard in the field of industrial maintenance systems. Nevertheles, its implementation on devices with low computing power remains a practical challenge. Industrial controllers, such as programmable logic controllers, or modern, low cost controller hardware, such as the Arduino or the Raspberry Pi open source hardware proposals, lack both the on-board memory and the high speed data acquisition hardware to perform an accurate spectral analysis of the machine's current, in order to identify the spectral components produced by each type of fault. In this paper, a signal conditioning unit, based on a novel downsampling method of the current, is presented. This unit reduces the amount of current samples that must be processed by the diagnostic unit to a mere sample per current cycle, maintains the sub-hertz accuracy needed to resolve fault, and converts the mains component into a constant value that can be easily eliminated without using any additional filter. Besides, it is implemented using low cost devices, just resistors and operational amplifiers. The proposed method is theoretically developed in this paper, and it has been validated using induction motors with broken bars fed directly by the mains or through variable speed drives.

Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition, SCADA, is the term used for a variety of hardware and software combinations that control things. Not things like personal computers, but things like factories. Often these things are critical infrastructures, such as the power grid, transportation systems, or other wide ranging distributed control environments. programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are at the heart of modern SCADA systems. PLCs read data inputs, act upon these data inputs, and set or reset outputs;they control everything from printing or packaging equipment on a factory floor to hydroelectric generators, train signalling systems, and airport parking structures. Over time, the functionality included in PLCs has increased dramatically;what used to be a simple-minded device is now an advanced computing machine with several different communications interfaces. At the same time, many (most?) PLCs now can be connected via standard Internet communications arrangements, using standard Internet protocols. To prove the point we have turned one of our lab PLCs into a general purpose - although size restricted - web server. What security issues are raised by this capability? Suddenly the information you are seeing presented by the PLC may not be correct, since the web pages might contain anything at all. Simply by replacing the factory-installed web content in the PLC we can spoof the pages in order to display whatever input or output status is desired, regardless of the actual status of the device. Can you trust what you are seeing from your control system? "No" is a bad answer! This paper provides details on a specific file system for a commercial PLC, and describes how we managed to spoof the download software to allow arbitrary files to be written into it. We wish to emphasized that our paper is presented as a do-it-yourself approach, as opposed to the usual research paper, in order to demonstrate the potential issues that arise when the firmware in PLCs can be modi

Function Blocks provides a means to model and program industrial control systems. The recently acclaimed IEC 61499 standard allows such system models to be partitioned and executed in a distributed fashion. At device level, such models are traditionally implemented onto programmable logic controllers that underneath have an operating system and a software run-time environment which implies high resource demands. However, there is a current trend to involve small embedded systems (so called Internet of Things devices) integrated into such distributed control systems. To this end, we seek to address the outsets for real-time execution of Function Block based designs onto light-weight controllers (MCUs) with limited resources (memory and CPU). Furthermore, we propose a mapping of the Function Block execution semantics onto the RTFM-kernel, and discuss opportunities for off-line (design time) analysis with respect to response time, overall schedulability and memory requirements.

Dynamic program analysis is a technique which records a program execution for the purpose of analyzing its behavior and building high-level models and views. This paper presents an approach to build a high-level model of the behavior of a PLC program component as observed in a program execution. Based on a deterministic record and replay technique, a model is synthesized which represents the transition behavior, timing information, and input output behavior of the component. Then this model can be used to check other executions of the same or similar programs for compliance with the model. We present the synthesis techniques and two variants of trace analysis algorithms.

The simulation of powerline communication (PLC) networks with larger numbers of nodes and with different channel conditions is essential for the development of the respective protocols, especially regarding medium access and network layer strategies. However, creating realistic models for network simulations is a complex process and demands high resources. Therefore, emulation and testbeds have been a necessary addition for testing and verification. In this paper, we propose a solution that brings both approaches closer together. Via the direct code execution (DCE) framework of the network simulator 3 (ns-3) project, we show how the machine code from real devices can be run within the network simulator, thus making it unnecessary to model the PLC protocol in another instance, namely the simulator. We will show results for the DLC (R)-3000 Single Frequency Network (SFN) PLC protocol and a proof of concept, that the same code performs on real PLC devices as well as within the simulator.

This study presents a touch screen technique for instruction in the use of programmable logic controllers (PLC). Students used touch screen software and a program containing virtual processes simulation to develop their own applications, both in class and at home. The main contributions of this study are as follows: (1) A learning platform was developed and experimentally tested;(2) Exercises were specifically targeted to the learning of PLC programming;(3) The technical aspects of the proposed touch screen technique are presented.

Balancing energy demand and production is becoming a more and more challenging task for energy utilities. This is due to a number of different reasons among which the larger penetration of renewable energies which are more difficult to predict and the meagre availability of financial resources to upgrade the existing power grid. While the traditional solution is to dynamically adapt energy production to follow the time-varying demand, a new trend is to drive the demand itself by means of Direct Load Control (DLC). In this paper we consider a scenario where DLC functionalities are deployed at a large set of small deferrable energy loads, like appliances of residential users. The required additional intelligence and communication capabilities may be introduced through smart plugs, without the need to replace older "dumb" appliances. Smart plugs are inserted between the appliances plugs and the power sockets and directly connected to the Internet. An open software architecture allows to abstract the hardware sensors and actuators integrated in the plug and to easily program different load control applications.

Due to ever shortening time-to-market of a system-on-a-chip (SoC) and increasing NRE cost of designing accelerators in the SoC, a design methodology for a flexible accelerator is desirable. We propose a novel technique to make custom instructions (CIs) of an application specific instruction-set processor (ASIP) flexible. By doing so, CIs can support applications that were not considered at design time of the ASIP, which is difficult to do with a conventional CI design method. We have shown that custom instructions generated by our technique can support future applications by up to 7X better than those from a conventional method.

High performance low-dropout regulators (LDOs) are indispensable in a system-on-a-chip (SoC) due to their low output noise, fast transient response and good power supply rejection (PSR) characteristics. In general, differential analog circuit loads need an LDO with high PSR, digital circuit loads need an LDO with fast load transient response, while single-ended analog/RF circuit loads need an LDO with both high PSR and fast transient response. Figure 17.11.1 shows an LDO embedded in an optical receiver that helps improve the sensitivity of the front-end system. On-chip LDOs with PSR in the GHz range are in high demand for wideband optical communication systems because there is only one photo detector in the optical receiver and supply voltage variations would degrade its sensitivity severely [1]. © 2014 IEEE.

The design of Automation and Control Systems shows a consolidated tendency towards what has been called Distributed Intelligence. This concept has proven to be appropriate to meet the current requirements imposed on production systems, aimed at optimizing the agility to respond to disturbances and productive environment;and enhance the reconfigurability of control systems and processes. Within the theoretical conceptions of the emergent Intelligent Automation, such as Agents, the Holonic Systems, Fractal Manufacturing stand above the rest. The theoretical concept should lead to availability of technological tools that enable its implementation. According to the previous idea, the IEC 61499 standard has been established approaches from intelligent distributed components. This comes as standard programming method that will surely pass the current forms of algorithm design for programmable logic controllers, whose languages are normalized by traditional IEC 61131-3. This paper aims to show how the recent standard is compatible with the adoption of new paradigms of automation, and illustrate the concepts of distributed intelligence and autonomy that could be implemented through algorithms with new structures of Function Blocks, compiled on some programmable controllers such as PLC. © 2014 IEEE.
