Due to ever shortening time-to-market of a system-on-a-chip (SoC) and increasing NRE cost of designing accelerators in the SoC, a design methodology for a flexible accelerator is desirable. We propose a novel technique to make custom instructions (CIs) of an application specific instruction-set processor (ASIP) flexible. By doing so, CIs can support applications that were not considered at design time of the ASIP, which is difficult to do with a conventional CI design method. We have shown that custom instructions generated by our technique can support future applications by up to 7X better than those from a conventional method.

Balancing energy demand and production is becoming a more and more challenging task for energy utilities. This is due to a number of different reasons among which the larger penetration of renewable energies which are more difficult to predict and the meagre availability of financial resources to upgrade the existing power grid. While the traditional solution is to dynamically adapt energy production to follow the time-varying demand, a new trend is to drive the demand itself by means of Direct Load Control (DLC). In this paper we consider a scenario where DLC functionalities are deployed at a large set of small deferrable energy loads, like appliances of residential users. The required additional intelligence and communication capabilities may be introduced through smart plugs, without the need to replace older "dumb" appliances. Smart plugs are inserted between the appliances plugs and the power sockets and directly connected to the Internet. An open software architecture allows to abstract the hardware sensors and actuators integrated in the plug and to easily program different load control applications.

Digital design has been growing rapidly during the last years, offering advanced implementation solutions for a diversity of appliances and instruments, integrating different sensors and actuators. This has a great impact on embedded automation, where traditional programmable logic controllers (PLCs) have been gradually replaced by high performance Embedded controllers, Digital Signal Processor (DSP) chips and, more recently, power efficient Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Such new implementation platforms bring together efficient design methodologies, like model-based design and high-level or C level program-based design. In their turn, new design methodologies are accompanied by new design technologies like Intellectual Property (IP) based design and High-Level Synthesis (HLS). This paper presents a design environment that utilizes program-based and model-based design, for the development of PLC applications. Specifically, a tool flow is constructed that supports either the design of new control algorithms or the translation of existing algorithms into C. Then, HLS and FPGA implementation tools are adopted, to implement the selected algorithms as mul-ticore, embedded designs, offering performance improvements and hardware utilization efficiency. Overall, the proposed methodology and underlying tool flow support a novel high productivity prototyping platform for digital control applications, with very promising future extension capabilities.
