A 10-bit current-steering digital-to-analog converter (DAC) has been proposed. This study is used for the transmitter (Tx) of the powerline communication (PLC) analog-front-end (AFE), and it reaches the standard of the HomePlug AV2. The proposed DAC also uses a technique as digital random-return-to-zero (DRRZ) [1] to achieve high performance in the OFDM communication systems. The test chip was fabricated in TSMC 90 nm CMOS technology and occupied 0.42 mm~2 for active area. The supplies for the analog and digital circuits are 2.5V and 1.2V. The maximum INL and DNL are 0.8 LSB and 0.3 LSB respectively. The SFDR is up to 40.09 dB for 1.25GS/s of Nyquist-rate sampling.

Power line communication (PLC) provides a reliable and inexpensive solution to enable high data rate services for indoor environments. In this work, we consider an indoor PLC network where several devices (or users) want to exchange data. To prevent severe signal attenuation and thus performance degradation over relatively long PLC links, we consider the use of a relay at a central location to assist the users in their data communication. For this scenario, we suggest the application of amplify-and-forward (AF) multi-way relaying (MWR) based on physical-layer network coding at the relay. To evaluate the performance of this scheme, its achievable data rate is studied with practical assumptions applicable to PLC systems. Our study shows that the employed AF MWR improves the system performance and increases the achievable common data rate at the users.

In this paper, we focus on narrowband (NB) OFDM PLC standards and associated implementations operating in frequency bands below 500 kHz. With the emergence of the Smart Grid Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI), an international PLC standards gap was identified requiring new technology to serve market needs for higher bitrates and increased robustness [1]. This paper provides a brief history of PLC technology alternatives and the emergence of NB OFDM PLC solutions that fill this "standards gap". We discuss power line channel impairments (e.g., noise, impedance) that we have measured on power grids and in dwellings such as in high rise buildings [2]. These studies have influenced emerging international NB OFDM PLC standards [3][4] and existing NB OFDM PLC solutions[5][6]. An important topic beyond NB PLC standardization is defining how the new modems coexist with legacy PLC modems operating in the same frequency band. SGIP PAP-15 [6] has done considerable work coordinating PLC coexistence requirements with IEEE P1901.2, ITU-T G.990x standards development;and PRIME and G3-PLC Alliances. Semiconductor's role is then to provide a hardware and software platform to realize a robust communications solution that can be deployed around the world. So then another important topic addressed is computational complexity. We roughly estimate modem computations as a function of signal bandwidth. This analysis shows that NB OFDM PLC standards can be implemented in software using a simple microprocessor;and in addition the same hardware platform can be used to implement the various standards.

A Coloured Petri Net (CPN) based method for programmable logic Controller (PLC) program validation is proposed in this paper. It uses a simple fixed net structure and does not require the creation of different Petri Nets for every new PLC program. The base of the method is the so-called technology description and operation state table used in engineering practice. The CPN simulates the operation of the PLC and compares the resulted values to the desired ones. In the case of a difference it indicates the existence of an error. The method is capable of automatic program validation and safety analysis, which is demonstrated through the example of an oil tank system.

To respond rapidly to the highly volatile market, the reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) have brought forward challenging issues. First of all there is a need to build a formal model of a manufacturing configuration. Second it has to be rather easy to derive the models associated to the manufacturing configuration changes (reconfiguration) from such an initial model. An off-line method of rapid design of an optimal logic control law (configuration) based on Petri net (PN) is presented in this paper. From a controlled system modeling point of view, the main characteristics of the level 1 of the CIM architecture are depicted. Subsequently, the formal tool used in the automated planning field is extended to provide a controlled system model. The concept of operation is structured in order to introduce the behavioral properties of the operations. A four-step method is then proposed to design a logic control law that satisfies several goals: reduction of the lead time, satisfaction of the work orders objectives, minimization of the time cycle. Finally, the proposed design method is illustrated on a manufacturing cell. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

To increase the unit area illumination of solar ray on PV panel, it is required to track the sun throughout the day. So to reach the goal various type of sun tracking mechanism is already developed but in this paper we designed two different types of sun tracking mechanism: single axis and dual axis tracking using programmable logic controller (PLC) as it has numbers of unique advantages like-it is faster, reliable, requires less maintenance and reprogrammable. A comparative study between those two systems is also presented in this paper. The whole system has been designed and tested using GE, FANUC PLC. © Allerton Press, Inc., 2012.

In process automation industry operator interface is usually a Human Machine Interface Unit (HMI). HMI plays a significant role in creating a friendly visual environment between the user and the technology. It is considered to be the window to the automation control system. Controlling through finger touch has replaced the use of hammers and manual switches enormously. With the increasing application of HMIs in industry, a good number of software tools are being introduced and the competiveness in designing HMI displays is increasing tremendously. This paper focuses on various important aspects in designing HMI displays to meet the quality criteria such as ease and seamlessness in user understanding, efficiency of learning the HMI design software tools and satisfaction of the operators to control large systems. These aspects consist of issues with screen layout, color representation, graphics and pictures, text and data values, alarms, navigation, control and so on. The scope of this paper is to gain knowledge about how to incorporate as much information in one limited display monitor, by multiple numbers of pages in a graphical hierarchy. This is needed to provide an operator with clear visual understandings of process operations with both moderate and complex applications. This paper also consists of appropriate guidelines for designing an HMI unit in a most efficient way. As examples we designed an HMI unit intended to control a packaging machine coupled with Allen-Bradley CompactLogix and MicroLogix programmable logic controllers (PLC) systems.

In this paper we discuss the technical requirements for communication solution to build the access networks of smart grid applications, and we analyse the deployment of the ICT infrastructure. For the investigations in this paper we focus on the high-speed narrowband Power Line Communications (PLC). First, we discuss the quality of service requirement imposed by the mostly used application for the distribution grid. Then, we give an overview about the current PLC implementations in Europe. The PLC deployment architecture is described, with the role of different PLC systems. After that, the deployment of PLC networks is discussed;covering network design, cost modelling and tool to assess different technology scenarios.

According to Finnish legislation, at least 80% of the energy meters in Finland have to be remotely readable and provide hourly based energy data by the end of 2013. Based on a questionnaire made to Finnish DSOs, a conservative estimate can be made that approx. 30...50% of these meters will use PLC communication in LV network. In a sample of 110 647 alredy installed meters approx. 3.6% of the meters using PLC had experienced communication problems either in commissioning stage or during operation. On-site measurements to study common customer apparatus disturbing the PLC were conducted in the networks of a few DSOs. Most common disturbance sources were frequency converters and switch-mode power supplies. A method based on HF current measurements was developed to facilitate the location of the disturbance source. The measurements indicate that in addition to insufficient emission limit standardization below 150 kHz the aging of customer equipment is a relevant cause of interference problems.

Due to the increasing in technological development and modernization of industrial process, control techniques to address high performance are being developed. These not only solve new problems in more complicated plants, but also improve the performance of existing controllers. To improve the control performance of electrical distribution substations, embedded optimization techniques have been developed utilizing the programmable logic controllers (PLC). In this work an industrial artificial neural controller, that is the union between industrial controller and neural network, in associated with an intelligent electronic device (IED) for data acquisition is developed. The PLC execute operational tasks. The neural network controller performs data processing in a MATLAB environment that communicates with the PLC, to receive and to send data, via OPC protocol. The proposed methodology is evaluated in virtual electrical power substations, where the automation devices are: 1) Smart Relays, Remote Transmission Units (RTU) and PLC are real devices and 2) transformers, circuit breakers and capacitor banks simulated with software or hardware.
