Using the Power Distribution Network (PDN) concurrently as a data bus with Power Line Communications (PLC) technology provides an interesting solution for reducing the complexity, weight and volume of electrical systems in commercial aircraft. The European Union project TAUPE has recently completed an investigation on the use of PLC in commercial aircraft. A Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of four was reached and significant weight and complexity savings were demonstrated. Extensive functional and performance tests have been performed for two cabin reference applications in a representative demonstrator. The measurements were performed with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) PLC equipment based on a state-of-the-art industry standard. A detailed analysis of the results showed a number of deficiencies in applying COTS technology, which has been developed primarily for consumer in-home multimedia distribution, to avionics systems. This paper will provide an analysis of the deficiencies identified during testing as well as present a set of guidelines to aid the way forward for further development towards reaching a higher TRL with PLC which has become well established in the consumer market, but has yet to reach its full potential for avionics applications.

In this paper an approach to support the development process of closed-loop control software for programmable logic controllers (PLC) is shown. To enhance the development process, a fast and reliable data transfer between different tools and models used during different design phases is realized by model transformation. A core model created using the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) and a corresponding model editor based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) in combination with a newly realized model transformation from the SysML parametric diagram to the Simulink block diagram is used to integrate the information from different engineering tools and models involved during automation engineering design phases. Hence, a consistent process for the development of closed-loop control software is realized.

programmablelogic Controller(PLC) is applied to a reactor protection system and an engineered safety feature-component control system as major safety system components in nuclear power plants. This paper describes the safety-critical software qualification experience including the pCOS(posCon Operating System) kernel and system tasks related to a safety-grade PLC which corresponds to the software verification and validation, software safety analysis, software quality assurance and software configuration management etc. Major qualification activities for the design output of the PLC development software are a technical evaluation, licensing suitability evaluation, inspection and traceability analysis, formal verification, software safety analysis, software quality assurance and its software configuration management. First, the technology evaluation performs a technical review which was based on engineering decision-making by verifiers. Second, the licensing suitability evaluation was performed according to the Code & Standard criteria by analyzing the designed outputs based on the functional characteristics and process characteristics defined in the verification and validation guidelines. Third, the inspection and traceability analysis used the System Inspection Support-Requirement Traceability(SIS-RT) of an in-house tool developed by Korea Nuclear Instrumentation and Control System(KNICS) Project. The inspection covers the correctness, consistency, completeness, properties of the inputs and outputs, behavioral entities, interfaces, etc with a three-folded checklist topology. Fourth, a formal verification was performed for the Statechart based on the Software Requirement Specification (SRS) and the Software Design Specification (SDS) by a Graphical Back Animation(GBA) and a simulation.
