The paper deals with black-box identification of industrial automated discrete manufacturing systems. The problem of obtaining Petri net (PN) models from the observable behavior, expressed as a sequence of input-output vectors, is addressed. First the problem is stated: important issues to handle in systems automated by programmable logic controllers that cannot be dealt by other methods are detailed. Then a novel method is presented;it focuses on building a compact and expressive representation of the observable part of the model which allows consequently the construction of a reduced complete Interpreted PN describing both observable and unobservable behavior.

We investigate the statistics of the in-home power line communications channel in the broadband frequency range up to 300 MHz. The analysis is based on the results of an experimental measurement campaign in Italy during which we acquired more than 1300 channels. Firstly, we focus on the channel frequency response. We study the statistics of the amplitude (in dB). In particular, we infer the normal distribution of the quantity. Furthermore, we examine the statistics of the phase. Then, we study the line impedance. We investigate the statistics of the resistive and reactive component of the line impedance and their relation. Finally, we perform the joint analysis of the line impedance components and the amplitude of the channel frequency response.

In the education of mechatronics engineers several didactic elements are used to give these engineers a good basis for their professional life. In addition to the standard learning situations such as lectures, exercises, lab experiments, tutorials, seminars, e-Learning, placement semesters (also abroad) or internships and finally the bachelor thesis with a colloquium, we have introduced development projects. The paper presents the didactical approach for development projects, the realized Mechatronical projects and the teaching results by integrating all different learning situations in such a development project.

Power line communication (PLC) technology is at a tipping point and may become ubiquitous as a home networking technology. However, there are concerns regarding RF interference between PLC networks and other radio operators. It is imperative that the interference dynamics of PLC systems be fully understood in advance of any large-scale roll-out. In this work, we experiment with two interference scenarios: notch-infilling due to non-linear mixing and mitigation of radiated emissions using RF chokes. In our controlled test bed environment, we measure RF emissions from the power line devices in the 1 MHz to 30 MHz range. Through the results and simulation, we demonstrate that the effect of non-linear devices may be less of a concern than initially thought, and that simple methods can be employed to control local RF interference.

Industrial process measurement and control systems are used in many industrial sectors in order to achieve production improvement, process optimization and accuracy of measurements. The increasing tendency in the construction of photovoltaic (PV) parks suggests the use of PLC and SCADA systems for the efficient operation. This paper proposes an intelligent automation system for supervising the performance assessment of a photovoltaic park. It is a data acquisition system based on PLC technology with the use of an OPC server and a high level program language for the front end. The front end (Graphical User Interface) is implemented in Visual Basic™. The PV Park has a total capacity of aprox. 17 kWp and consists of fixed and tracking units. There are 13 different types of PV modules installed, of which four are mounted on fixed as well as on tracking systems. The proposed data monitoring and acquisition system is able to record various parameters of the PV park performance.

Power line communication (PLC) has been widely used in the Smart Grid environment as it represents a low cost communication solution for distribution networks and more recently smart metering. However, its instability under noisy channel conditions requires careful simulations and modelling before implementing any PLC-based solution. Modelling physical characteristics of PLC using different simulation tools has been investigated in the past and is an ongoing research challenge. In this paper, the suitability of PLC for smart metering is tested in terms of scalability and performances under different noise conditions, by using discrete event simulations for a PLC model previously validated with experimental results under the EU-funded project HiPerDNO.

This paper presents a preliminary study of an approach that models programmable logic controllers(PLCs) for their effective deployment in industrial control processes. A working model is developed forautomatic allocation of PLCs and also a formal verification of Ladder Diagram representations of controlprocesses using the Symbolic Model Verifier (SMV) tool. Automatic resource allocation is achieved throughthe proposition of a digraph model for any Ladder Diagram representation of a control process, which is thentranslated into an XML (Extensible Mark Up Language) model. The required PLC resources needed toimplement a control process are extracted from the XML model. These resources are then used by a selectionengine to determine, from a PLC database, the most appropriate PLCs or Embedded controllers (EBCs) thatcan satisfy the resource requirements. Additionally, information extracted from the XML model is used togenerate a formally verifiable SMV code of the system. This paper focuses on the practical implementation,testing, and verification of three conceptual modules applied to a control process. These are, the XML modelof the control process, the PLC Database Automatic Resource Allocation, and the XML-to-SMV *** work was significantly motivated by the ever increasing number of industries who seek to increase theirproductivity by automating their processes.

Using the Power Distribution Network (PDN) concurrently as a data bus with Power Line Communications (PLC) technology provides an interesting solution for reducing the complexity, weight and volume of electrical systems in commercial aircraft. The European Union project TAUPE has recently completed an investigation on the use of PLC in commercial aircraft. A Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of four was reached and significant weight and complexity savings were demonstrated. Extensive functional and performance tests have been performed for two cabin reference applications in a representative demonstrator. The measurements were performed with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) PLC equipment based on a state-of-the-art industry standard. A detailed analysis of the results showed a number of deficiencies in applying COTS technology, which has been developed primarily for consumer in-home multimedia distribution, to avionics systems. This paper will provide an analysis of the deficiencies identified during testing as well as present a set of guidelines to aid the way forward for further development towards reaching a higher TRL with PLC which has become well established in the consumer market, but has yet to reach its full potential for avionics applications.

Impulsive noise (IN) consists of sudden short time peaks of high power which appear in communication channels from time to time. The IN influence on Power Line Communications (PLC) has been proved to be very harmful. A particular feature of PLC standards is the prohibition of signal power transmission at the frequency bands used by radio amateurs, which are referred to as the masked tones;however when IN arrives at the receiver, it is expected some IN leakage into these masked tones in the same way as into the rest of the PLC spectrum. We present an IN cancelling method which removes the IN from the received signal by analyzing the IN components at the masked tones.

This paper proposes Retrospective Validation method for working programmable-logic-Controller based Computerized System. The proposed method consists of three solutions;(1) clarify a validation concept for computerized system that is developed by combining several different categories, (2) Clarify risk reduction measures into four types (task, program, structure, and hardware modification), and (3) Define detailed RCSV procedure depending on the current status of PBCS and development documents. As a result of application, we found that the proposed method reduce the 20% working time and develop adequate validation documents.
