In modern programmable logic controllers (PLCs) programming education and training, software packages emulating industrial plants are replacing physical target systems. Whilst this approach is indubitably cost and safety effective, it is important to understand how educationally effective it is, and to what extent can it replace training on real plants. The paper analyses this problem from the feedback that authors got from HMS research and their students in a more than ten years build up experience of control education based on both real and synthetic systems. It concludes that synthetic plants are indeed effective in many training scenarios, but real target systems are still irreplaceable for a cluster of applications. Moreover, despite computer games technology is making synthetic target systems very appealing, both educators and simulation software developers recognize that there is still room for improvement. As such, seizing recent advances in computer technology, software developers are preparing a new generation of synthetic plants.

The technology and design flow used for developing two advanced Systems On Chip is described. The chips are JPIC, an image compression ASIC using JPEG2000 standard, and GR712RC, a dual core LEON3FT processor. Both chips employ the Rad-Hard-By-Design RadSafe™ technology, and are implemented on a standard 0.18μm CMOS technology. Each chip size is 12×12mm, integrating more than 40 million transistors. RadSafe™ technology provides very high immunity to all radiation effects. The library was designed for high immunity to radiation and high reliability. It includes standard cells, SRAMs, all-digital DLL and I/O cells. It was proven on several test chips, demonstrating TID immunity in excess of 300Krad, proven SEL above 80MeV and SEU at 20μ2 cross section (10-12 errors/bit/day). logic design includes EDAC, memory BIST, and techniques to minimize soft errors. logic synthesis was performed with large timing margins and scan insertion. Physical synthesis includes a robust power grid, careful placement of I/O cells, immunity to process sensitivities, robustness to thermomechanical stress and packaging reliability. A custom 240 pins CQFP ceramic package for GR712RC was optimized for mechanical stress, hermeticity, improved supply connection for reduced impedance, and robustness to handling. A custom 208 pins PQFP plastic package was designed for JPIC.

With ongoing smart grid initiative, there is a considerable need for developing new algorithmic solutions and validating at laboratory level before they can be successfully applied in the power grid. This research work addresses the development of a real time test bed by integrating several hardware's including the Allen Bradley programmable logic controllers (PLC), National Instruments PXI (NI-PXI) controller, Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS), and Schweitzer Engineering Lab (SEL) devices. This work also integrates the OSIsoft PI Server system and the establishment of data channel over Ethernet/IP for communication and control. The developed test bed is evaluated by simulating a simple test case in RTDS and executing the control logic in PLC. The test bed provides a user friendly Human Machine Interface (HMI) for monitoring and control at different levels of the system along with capabilities for storing the power system data which includes Synchrophasor data for forensic analysis. This test bed will be essentially used for modeling and study of different power system operation control algorithms as well as to investigate cyber vulnerability and mitigation.

The paper presents an approach which combines the formalism of Petri Nets and of model checking in order to deliver correct and dependable PLC programs. Based on SIPNs, a variant of PNs, the complete controller development process from an informal specification to the final implementation on a PLC is discussed. The SIPN formalized according to corresponding plant model enables the derivation of standard functional properties and the specific functional properties of the PLC control algorithm. These properties are verified and validated with the model checker tool Cadence SMV. In order to do this, the SIPN is translated into SMV input code, in which there are inserted the functional properties to be verified and validated, expressed by using Temporal logic formulae. This correct SIPN is used as a basis for implementation. For the realization there are used standard PLC programming languages according to IEC 61131. It resulted that the approach provides correctness of the resulting PLC programs, which makes them much more dependable than direct implemented PLC code. In order to illustrate the approach steps a working example was used.
