Many volatile compounds, such as isoprene, a precursor used in the synthesis of natural rubber, have been produced through fermentation using genetically engineered microorganisms. Despite this biotechnological success, measuring the concentrations of volatile compounds during fermentation is difficult because of their high volatility. In current systems, off-line analytical methods usually lead to product loss, whereas on-line methods raise the production cost due to the requirement of complex devices. Here, we developed a novel on-line gas chromatography (GC)-based system for analyzing the concentration of isoprene with the aim to minimize the cost and requirement for devices as compared to current strategies. In this system, a programmable logic controller is used to combine conventional GC with a syringe pump module (SPM) directly connected to the exhaust pipe of the fermentor, and isoprene-containing samples are continuously pumped from the SPM into the GC using an air cylinder recycle stream. We showed that this novel system enables isoprene analysis during fermentation with convenient equipment and without the requirement of an expensive desorption tube. Furthermore, this system may be extended to the detection of other volatile organic compounds in fermentation or chemical processes. (C) 2018, The Society for Biotechnology, Japan. “Every dark side has its bright side” like adopting Solar energy as an alternative to non-conventional Energy sources. Similarly, “Every bright side has its dark side” like improper PV end-of-life management might create million tons of waste by 2050, which is a burden to the environment. Creating sustainable goals is easier than implementation the same for an Individual to the industrial level. We are responsible for that we create, with proper implementation of end of life management, we can clear out the dark shades. We are the achievers when the technologies what we created make these Sustainable options so smart and viable. With this motivation, the study presents the policies under PV recycling and implemented the Smart control and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Screens of the Thin-film cd Te thermal treatment process. The PV recycling process consists of the mechanical, thermal, chemical treatment process. Irrespective of the process, each treatment requires an engineered system (hopper, conveyor, pumps, mixers, crushers) with proper control and communication set up. This study considered each stage as an individual unit consisting of a programmable logic controller (S7300 PLC) and a closed-loop controlled vector drive (G120). Software simulations performed in the TIA Portal for PLC- Drive communication and WINCC RT professional Software to implement SCADA screens by considering Virtual Inputs from the controller. © 2020

The development of supervisory controllers for cyber-physical systems is a laborious and error-prone process. Supervisor synthesis enables control designers to automatically synthesize a correct-by-construction supervisor from a model of the plant in combination with a model of the control requirements. Subsequently, the controller code can be generated from the supervisor model such that it can be implemented on a programmable logic controller (PLC). In industry, supervisors have to adhere to strict safety standards. To achieve these standards, safety PLCs (SPLCs) are used. For SPLC implementation, the supervisor has to be split into a regular part and a safety part. This paper presents a method to automatically splits a supervisor model for this purpose. To validate the method, a case study on a rotating bridge has been performed. The result is compared to a splitting result made by experts. Furthermore, the supervisor has been implemented to control the real bridge.

Security Enhancement Against Insiders in Cyber-Manufacturing Systems

Insiders—who are within a security parameter of a system—can intentionally or unintentionally harm the system due to their granted access authorization and intimate knowledge of the system. Especially, Cyber-Manufacturing systems employing programmable logic controller (PLC) to control manufacturing processes via various computer networks can be easily compromised and critically damaged by insiders. This paper presents a system architecture of an applied blockchain in Cyber-Manufacturing System, where the input data for PLC is stored and retrieved through the blockchain. The paper demonstrates how the blockchain technology can help preventing the data from unintended manipulation or data injection by insiders.

In this paper, a hardware set up based on programmable logic controller (PLC) and human machine interface (HMI) with variable speed AC drives (VSDs), is introduced and discussed. The main objectives are to provide constant linear paper winder speed and tension operation, over the whole zones of the machine, irrespective of variation of radius and inertia of un-winder and re-winder parts of the machine. The proposed setup components and PLC algorithm are discussed and the practical results are obtained and analyzed for validation of the hardware setup over an industrial paper slitter machine. The proposed sensor-less tension control algorithm is based on counting the number of pulses at the nip-roll using encoder, then be used to calculate the changes in both un-winder and re-winder roll diameters. The PLC calculates the required reference torque and angular speeds for both un-winder and re-winder drives to keep the material operation at constant tension and line speed during the whole machine without the need of any tension sensor at any zones.

Recycling old electronic components facilitates the recovery of valuable materials that can be used to produce new ones. As a result, energy is saved, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced, and many natural resources are salvaged by extracting fewer raw materials. The paper focuses on rapid sorting method developed for separating the dismembered components of a personal computers motherboard. After a simultaneous disassembly process of the board, some of the components like plastics, silicon chips, surface-mount devices and magnetic components need to be intelligently sorted, therefore economically separated. In the sorting process a conveyor belt was used to transport the components one by one. A contour vision sensor was used to acquire and process the images, consequently to recognize the components. The visual sensor binary code output is connected to a Mitsubishi FX3G programmable logic controller. Finally, electro pneumatic valves with directional air flow control are used to position the objects from the conveyor belt into separate bins.

Remote control-logic injection attacks on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) impose critical threats to industrial control system (ICS) environments. For instance, Stuxnet infects the control logic of a Siemens S7-300 PLC to sabotage nuclear plants. Several control logic injection attacks have been studied in the past. However, they focus on the development and infection of PLC control logic and do not consider the stealthy methods of transferring the logic to a PLC over the network. This paper is the first effort to explore the packet manipulation of control logic to achieve stealthiness without modifying PLC firmware to support new (obfuscation) functionality. It presents two new control logic injection attacks: (1) Data Execution and (2) Fragmentation and Noise Padding. Data Execution attack subverts signatures (based-on packet-header fields) by transferring control logic to the data blocks of a PLC and then, changes the PLC's system control flow to execute the attacker's logic. Fragmentation and Noise Padding attack subverts deep packet inspection (DPI) by appending a sequence of padding bytes in control logic packets while keeping the size of the attacker's logic in packet payloads significantly small. We implement the attacks on two industry-scale PLCs of different vendors and demonstrate that these attacks can subvert intrusion detection methods successfully, such as signature-based intrusion detection and Anagram-based DPI. We also release the training and attack datasets to facilitate research in this direction.

In this paper we demonstrate two applications of a low-cost remote supervisory control and data acquisition system in two models. The first model is demonstrated with a Profibus-DP protocol based system in which a master programmable logic controller (PLC) unit with control inputs and display outputs controls the speed and monitors the overload condition of a DC motor that is connected to a slave PLC in real time. In the upgraded model, a Profinet protocol is used to connect PLCs, and a power-line communication link is used to remotely connect the control HMI to the network. In both models, remote Supervisory control is achieved using user-defined control functions that act altogether as a block-oriented function library or toolbox. High levels of performance are achieved in real time control and data acquisition in both models.
