This thesis is the development of an industrial control system to enable autonomous operation of the electrical generator for a small-scale compressed air energy storage system (SS-CAES). The purpose of the SS-CAES is to facilitate electrical energy storage (EES) at Department of the Navy (DON) facilities using preexisting compressed air systems. Development of the control system focused on designing a robust control program that was scalable to enable application to a broad range of facilities. The control system accomplished scalability through a single control program by utilizing scalable commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware components. The possible use of the SS-CAES for providing emergency electrical power requires the control system to be capable of a dark start. The term dark start refers to a power generation system that does not require electrical energy in the form of batteries or external power to begin operation. Dark start systems have the potential to store energy for extended periods of time without maintenance. The implementation of this control system with retrofitted compressed air systems at DON facilities increases the viability of SS-CAES, enabling storage of electrical power produced by solar and wind generation.

Industrial Control Systems (ICSs) manage critical infrastructures such as water treatment facilities, petroleum refineries, and power plants. ICSs are networked through Information Technology (IT) infrastructure for remote monitoring and control of physical processes. As ICSs integrate with IT infrastructure, IT vulnerabilities are carried over to the ICS environ- ment. Previously proposed process controller security architectures maintain safe and stable plant operation even in the presence of attacks that exploit ICS vulnerabilities. Security architectures are process control system-level solutions that leverage isolated and trusted hardware (secure enclaves) for ICS security. Upon detecting an intrusion, the secure enclave switches control of the physical process to a high assurance controller, making a fail-safe plant operation. The process control loop components have an average lifespan of several decades. During this time, electromechanical components of process control loop may undergo aging that alters their characteristics and affects control loop performance. To deal with component aging and to improve control algorithm flexibility, updates to control loop parameters are required. Plant model, process control loop system specifications, and control algorithm-based security mechanisms at the secure enclave require parameter updates. ICSs have hundreds of process control components that may need be installed in hazardous environments and distributed across hundreds of square kilometers. Updating each component physically may lead to accidents, expensive travel, and increased downtime. Some ICS have allowable downtime of only 5 minutes per year. Hence, remote updates are desirable. A proposed dedicated and isolated hardware module at the secure enclave provides authenti- cation of the update and ensures safe storage in a non-volatile memory. SCADA network forensics of the PCCC protocol

Most SCADA devices have few built-in self-defence mechanisms, and tend to implicitly trust communications received over the network. Therefore, monitoring and forensic analysis of network traffic is a critical prerequisite for building an effective defense around SCADA units. In this work, we provide a comprehensive forensic analysis of network traffic generated by the PCCC(programmable controller Communication Commands) protocol and present a prototype tool capable of extracting both updates to programmable logic and crucial configuration information. The results of our analysis show that more than 30 files are transferred to/from the PLC when downloading/uploading a ladder logic program using RSLogix programming software including configuration and data files. Interestingly, when RSLogix compiles a ladder-logic program, it does not create any low-level representation of a ladder-logic file. However, the low-level ladder logic is present and can be extracted from the network traffic log using our prototype tool. The tool extracts SMTP configuration from the network log and parses it to obtain email addresses, username and password. The network log contains password in plain text. (C) 2017 The Author(s). Material handling in manufacturing systems is becoming easier as the automated machine technology is improved. Nowadays, most of the research aims at increasing the flexibility and improving the performance of the automatic guided vehicle (AGV). In this paper, designed and made AGV in the Industrial Control Laboratory in Royce Lab at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology will be presented. For controlling the navigation of the AGV, a newly developed controller integrated fuzzy logic with programmable logic controller will be used. By using integrated fuzzy logic controller with programmable logic controller (IFLPLC), the flexibility of AGV will be increased and we achieved great advantages, which can be used in future. Since this AGV uses programmable logic controller and fuzzy logic controllers together, then it will be useful for factories which implement flexible manufacturing system (FMS). Online maintenance and sending the commands to other machines from AGV and so on are the advantages that can be used in FMS. The aim of this paper is to propose the practical example of IFLPLC. The designed AGV is able to reach the target. Further researches are required for collision avoidance and selecting the best way in FMS.

In order to design a vertical lifting three-dimensional garage control system, and to achieve the mechanical three-dimensional garage of the university automatic operation, the photoelectric sensors, hall pressure sensors and programmable logic controller (PLC) are used. The results show that the three-dimensional garage control system can run safely and reliably, and each sensor can perform fault self-diagnosis and carry out certain treatment on the fault. In conclusion, the three-dimensional garage control system designed is feasible, and it can get wide extension and application.

A new innovative Whole Body 11.7-T MRI magnet is currently being manufactured at Alstom Belfort as part of the Iseult/Inumac project. It will be installed in 2016 in a neuroscience research center with other very-high-field MRI equipment, operating in France at CEA Saclay. The magnet has external dimensions of 5 m in diameter and 5 m in length, with a stored magnetic energy of 338 MJ. The magnet will operate at a homogeneous field level of 11.75 T within a 90-cm warm bore and at a current of 1483 A in driven mode. The external cryoplant is connected to the magnet, and it provides pressurized Helium II at 1.8 K. The magnet facility has to operate 24 h a day continuously for several years. Therefore, all external components have been designed to avoid magnet discharge as much as possible in case of failure from the mains, power supplies, liquefier, helium compressor, etc. In order to increase its reliability, the quench detection system is based on majority voting redundancy. This paper describes the redundancy of the power supplies system, the architecture of the magnet safety system, the high availability of the magnet control system, and cryogenic supply.

The method is suggested to establish master-slave communication between the Siemens PLC and field devices based on the Modbus protocol for process control systems. The data exchange between the PLC and current node in the network is organized by using the session data blocks. Creating the request package and unpacking the response from the slave device are carried out by the two respective functions made with the SCL language help in the Step 7 system. At the implementation of this method, the storing of the network and nodes characteristics as well as the data obtained from the network are implemented in additional data blocks of the network level which are the shared memory for the entire control system. This ensures their availability for both the PLC software and the visualization software. The using of the shared memory provides an ability to design a PLC program for data exchange through a network and for process control carried independently of each other which considerably simplifies the development of the process control system software.

Adaptive under-voltage load shedding scheme for large interconnected smart grids based on wide area synchrophasor measurements

The existing local protection schemes for undervoltage protection in power systems are not engineered to protect the system against wide area disturbances. Therefore, system integrity protection schemes (SIPS) designed to preserve the integrity of the system are required. This study proposes a new response-based SIPS for adaptive undervoltage load shedding (UVLS) in large interconnected systems based on the IEEE C37.118.1-2011 synchrophasor measurements from widely dispersed phasor measurement units (PMUs) synchronised to the reference time of the global positioning system. The control signals to shed the feeder loads are based on high-speed IEC 61850 Generic Object Oriented Substation Event messages. The proposed adaptive UVLS-SIPS algorithm calculates in real-time the total amount of load to shed corresponding to the severity of the disturbance using the least squares algorithm. The amount of load to shed and its distribution across the interconnected system is based on a formulated reactive power mismatch and adaptive weighted summation real-time voltage stability assessment index, respectively. The proposed UVLS-SIPS algorithm was deployed onto a programmable logic controller (PLC), and was tested under various dynamic conditions using the New England 39-bus test system. Real-time simulations were conducted with an industrial-grade 'proof-of-concept' testbed.
