For an established control system, scan cycle time of the PLC is almost constant during steady operation. Scan cycle time of PLC can be act as a timing unit and realize the function of timer by appropriate programming. The timing method based on PLC scan cycle time is practiced in judgment of start success of generator set and grasping of ACB (air circuit breaker of generator) closing opportunity in automatic synchronization control and achieved the desired results. Application of this timing method reduced the hardware of the control system, improved the reliability and economical efficiency. Several years of operation in training lab proved that this control method is reliable and steady.

In solar energy generation, most tracking systems are developed for photovoltaic (PV) systems. These controls are built for installations that are typically heavy, require a lot of power, and don't require close tolerances on the algorithm. However, due to the high correlation of direct solar incidence, solar thermal applications require much stricter tolerances, but can be built with much lower power requirements due to the significantly reduced weight. The proposed system will use an Arduino style microcontroller for a dual axis tracking system. One axis will be an axial "turntable" controlled with a single pneumatic cylinder. The second axis will be angular, and will be controlled with two pneumatic cylinders. The voltage required for this system is 12 VDC, which will allow for flexible energy storage options. The use of a USB enables Arduino will allow an end user to utilize a laptop to run diagnostics when installing the full system to enable optimization of the power generated. Once the system is optimized, it will be able to run without the interface to reduce the power requirement of the control system. This paper will show that the proposed system is energy efficient and cost effective with the ability to integrate with local resources. This system, when combined with a lightweight solar thermal generator, will be an ideal daytime generator for remote installations, especially in those areas with little or no access to traditional grid power.

As automated manufacturing systems become more and more complex, the need for new methodologies to improve the design and development of industrial monitoring and control solutions is becoming peremptory. programmable logic controllers (PLCs) dominates the application domain meaning that they are established as the most popular industrial controllers used in factory and shop floor. Although the capabilities of these controllers have strongly improved in the last decades, their historical background as the easy understand by the electricians who had previously worked on electrical systems has meant that the de-facto standard for the implementation of control and monitoring solution for these devices remains the ladder logic. However, to face the globalization challenges, the manufacturing companies needs to improve their productivity by reducing the costs, delivering high-quality of products with high variety and improving their responsiveness to changing market condition. Moreover productivity gains can also be achieved by reducing the life-cycle costs of manufacturing production systems implying the using of more flexible and agile approaches. In this scenario, the proposed methodology aims to provide a homogeneous and optimum process that, starting from a set of mechanical specifications and behavioural models of machines, enable the generation of industrial logic automatically ensuring the same structure and naming standard in every project and the quality of the code.

The implication of failure to diagnose the faults of AC motors at the inception stage would lead to unscheduled machine down-time that can upset datelines and causes financial losses. Classical methods which involve thermal switches, overload relays, timers, magnetic contactors and programmable integrated circuits were adopted in early days. But these methods did not guarantee full protection of motor. This paper introduces new approach to condition monitoring of motors through intelligent diagnostic system based on stator current analysis and programmable logic controllers. The proposed method is validated by experiments performed on five different defect levels. Experiment results show that this technique is more accurate, cost effective, safe and provides continuous real time tracking of faults and estimates the severity through visual indication.

Even though several papers have researched the PLC-implementation of DES supervisory control, the general idea of implementation is not given in detail and the selection of controllable events at a single state remains unsolved. This paper demonstrates a general approach to realize the PLC-implementation of the monolithic, decentralized and hierarchical DES supervisory control. To solve the problem that only one controllable event can occur at a certain instant, this paper proposes some approaches to deal with the selection of controllable events at one single state, where several controllable events are eligible to occur. An experiment on a logistic sorting system is reported to show the validity of our approach.

This paper presents various possibilities of remote control of the electrical disconnectors located on the railway's contact line. The disconnectors's can be controlled remotely by maneuvers made by the railway station dispatcher, when demanded by and with the approval of the railway power dispatcher. Disconnectors are electrically maneuvered by means of an actuator which can be controlled locally (directly from the device's control panel or from the local railway station) and by remote control (from the railway power dispatch). The disconnectors's remote control system is located in the office of the railway station dispatcher and it is composed of a local control panel, conductive elements and an interface relay panel. The local control panel has buttons that send remote control signals and lights that signal the command sent. The conductive elements are connectors between the local control panel and disconnector's motor operating devices. The interface of the relay panel is necessary to obtain the disconnectors's remote control. The implementation of programmable logic controllers, used in both in the command and the disconnectors's status signal was possible by taking information from the interface relays. The traffic information received from railway stations and its integration in supervisory control and data acquisition distribution systems leads to major railway traffic improvement.

This paper presents the practical implementation of an experimental platform used for the automatic transfer switch to the back-up power source. The automatic transfer switch concept represents the procedure of fast connection of the electrical consumers to a back-up electric power source. The connection to the back-up power source is necessary in the event of failure of the main power source. The experimental platform is designed to operate in automatic standard mode, manual mode and through a programmable logic controller. The selection's mode of operation is determined by the operation's key. The simulation of grid faults on the power supply is done by means of the controls and the variable voltage regulators located on the experimental platform. The automatic transfer switch is conditioned by the effective status of the power supply and minimum voltage allowed by devices. The signaling status of the power supply is performed based on the information received from relays of interface and programmable logic controllers. The platform presents to users two technologies able to achieve the same function. Thus, in case of the classic mode of the automatic transfer switch, the wired technology is used and this involves many components and related links. In case of the automatic transfer switch based on programmable logic controller, a technology based on programming is also implemented. Using this platform, the advantage of implementation of programmable logic controllers versus wired technology in industrial applications can be observed.

Performance evaluation of subsea BOP control systems using dynamic Bayesian networks with imperfect repair and preventive maintenance

The work presents a dynamic Bayesian networks (DBN) modeling of series, parallel and 2-out-of-3 (2oo3) voting systems, taking account of common-cause failure, imperfect coverage, imperfect repair and preventive maintenance. Seven basic events of one, two or three component failure are proposed to model the common-cause failure of the three-components-systems. The imperfect coverage is modeled in the conditional probability table by defining a coverage factor. A multi-state degraded component is used to model the imperfect repair and preventive maintenance. Using the proposed method, a DBN modeling of a subsea blowout preventer (BOP) control system is built, and the reliability and availability are evaluated. The mutual information is researched in order to assess the important degree of basic events. The effects of degradation probability, failure rate and mean time to repair (MTTR) on the performances are studied. The results show that the repairs and maintenance can improve the system performance significantly, whereas the imperfect repair cannot degrade the system performance significantly in comparison with the perfect repair, and the preventive maintenance can improve the system performance slightly in comparison with the imperfect repair. In order to improve the performance of subsea BOP control system, the single surface components and the components with all-common-cause failure should given more attention. The influence of degradation probability on the performance is in the order of PLC, PC and ES. The influence of failure rate and MTTR on the performance is in the order of PLC, ES, PC, DO, DI and AI.
