A simple and convenient control system has been developed for the 150 MeV proton FFAG accelerator complex at Research Reactor Institute, Kyoto University. This control system is designed as a distributed control scheme and developed with simple and versatile tools, such as PLCs, LabVIEW and an IP based network, expecting applications in small accelerators, which are often operated by non-specialists in computer programming or in control systems. The control system for the FFAG accelerator complex has actually been developed by non-specialists, and the developed control system was successfully used for commissioning the FFAG complex. programmable logic controller (PLC) is one of the most important components in today's manufacturing. Its performance-based microprocessor and software have been a bottleneck for improving its efficiency. To enhance the PLC performance and flexibility, a new PLC design based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) has been a hot topic because of its parallel execution mechanism and reconfigurable hardware structure. From practical viewpoint, in this paper, the authors propose an approach to implement the existing ladder diagram (LD) inside FPGA making full use of the advantage of FPGA device. The essential of this research includes two issues: (a) analyze the LD program and organize it with sequential and parallel structure and (b) implement the sequential and parallel structure of the LD program with hardware description language inside FPGA. To the first work, the condensed simultaneity graph theory is applied to optimize the LD program with sequential and parallel structure. To the second work, Boolean equations are taken as the bridge to convert the optimized LD program to the hardware description language program. Finite state machine is used to generate sensitive signals to guarantee that the performance of the converted very high-speed integrated circuit hardware description language design is the same as the original ladder diagram. A case study is practiced to verify the proposed approach in this paper.

Design of fuzzy logic control system incorporating human expert knowledge for combine harvester

Many factors affect the yield loss in wheat harvesting with a grain combine harvester. Grain harvesting is a non-linear process, is of considerable complexity, and there is no mathematical model to describe the behavior of this complex system. In this paper, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) incorporating human expert knowledge is designed for automatic adjustment and control of the harvester to achieve minimal grain losses especially at the position of straw walker and upper sieve. The FLC automatically adjusts cylinder speed, concave clearance, fan speed and forward speed of the combine based on the measured losses at straw walker and sieve sections. The designed FLC expert system consists two inputs and four outputs. Trapezoidal membership functions were selected for input fuzzy linguistic variables (straw walker and sieve losses), whereas fuzzy singletons were considered for the outputs. Based on human expert knowledge, six rules with logical AND operator and Mamdani implication are extracted. FLC was implemented in a programmable logic controller (PLC). Field experiments in two different irrigated or non-irrigated cultivated areas in order to evaluate the system. It was found the losses at the position of straw walker and upper sieve in the irrigated wheat cultivated area is much higher than the dry wheat cultivation area. Statistical analysis using t-test was also indicated a significant difference (p < 1%) between loss mean in the combine equipped with the controller and the one without FLC. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. This paper presents a remote laboratory with facilities that allow students to interact and perform, via Internet, experiments in automation and process control. It proposes a Hardware-Software system which allows monitoring and controlling, through a website, a prototype of an industrial process implemented at the Industrial Automation Laboratory of the Department of Electronic Engineering at the UNEXPO "Antonio Jose de Sucre", at Barquisimeto, Venezuela. The interaction of a Server computer, a programmable logic controller or PLC and an IP camera allows the monitoring and controlling of a concentrated food maker prototype remotely. The software has two applications: the Server and the Client, the first being composed of ail embedded Modbus TCP/IP Server into the PLC and a Web server which allows Students to access the remote laboratory. The second component is integrated by a group of Java applets to control and monitor the system and also allows the Students to Visualize real time images through an IP camera. A parabolic solar cooker with automatic two axes sun tracking system

A parabolic solar cooker with automatic two axes sun tracking system was designed, constructed. operated and tested to overcome the need for frequent tracking and standing in the sun, facing all concentrating solar cookers with manual tracking, and a programmable logic controller was used to control the motion of the solar cooker. The results of the continuous test - performed for three days from 8:30 h to 16:30 h in the year 2008 - showed that the water temperature inside the cooker's tube reached 90 degrees C in typical summer days, when the maximum registered ambient temperature was 36 degrees C. It was also noticed that the water temperature increases when the ambient temperature gets higher or when the solar intensity is abundant. This is in favor of utilizing this cooker in many developing countries, which are characterized by high solar insulations and high temperatures. Besides cooking, the proposed cooker could be utilized for warming food, drinks as well as to pasteurize water or milk. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We present FBDTestMeasurer, an automated test coverage measurement tool for function block diagram (FBD) programs which are increasingly used in implementing safety critical systems such as nuclear reactor protection systems. We have defined new structural test coverage criteria for FBD programs in which dataflow-centric characteristics of FBD programs were well reflected. Given an FBD program and a set of test cases, FBDTestMeasurer produces test coverage score and uncovered test requirements with respect to the selected coverage criteria. Visual representation of uncovered data paths enables testers to easily identify which parts of the program need to be tested further. We found many aspects of the FBD logic that were not tested sufficiently when conducting a case study using test cases prepared by domain experts for reactor protection system software. Domain experts found this technique and tool highly intuitive and useful to measure the adequacy of FBD testing and generate additional test cases.

The size of friction torque and the overall performance of clutch depend on the qualities of disk drives' end runout and radial runout. For the unceasingly increased requirements on detection technology in the domestic auto industry, a detection system which is used for automatic detection on line and automatic data storage has been designed, combined computer technology with the specific requirements of automatic detection. The system centers on automatic detection and automatic data storage system, using personal computer as upper computer to realize human-machine interface, data storage and network features;using PLC as lower computer which is the core component in controlling to complete the acquisition of various signals and the output control of various actions and also using digital dial gauge as acquisition sensor to fulfill the data acquisition about the displacement of end runout and radial runout. The experimental results show that the system is responsive and of high detection accuracy. Its detection and control work well. At the same time it has the characteristics of low cost, easiness in control and operating, high reliability and and so it has certain value in practice.

The conception of the hardware-software platform is presented in the paper. Presented platform is designed in order to test different constructions of the central processing units dedicated to programmable logic controllers. Selected hardware solutions for the PLC dual processor bit-byte (word) CPUs, which are oriented for optimised maximum utilization of capabilities of the two-processor architecture of the CPU are presented in the paper. The key point is preserving high speed of instruction processing by the bit-processor, and high speed and functionality of the byte (word)-processor. The structure should enable the processors to work in concurrent mode as far as it is possible, and minimize the situations, when one processor has to wait for the other. Designed platform is based on the development board equipped with Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGA. Software tool for testing possibilities of the selected units and testing utilization of the programmable structure was also developed.

For covering the real-time characteristics of an automation system during model-based design it is essential to model not only the function but also the behaviour of the control programs running on a real-time controller. This paper introduces an approach to the modelling and evaluation of the functional and time behaviour of programmable logic controllers (PLC) on model level. The control algorithm consisting of UML statecharts is extended with an execution model of the controller which is also given as a statechart. The approach is integrated into a model-based design system for industrial control systems focusing on the field of production systems. An example will be employed to illustrate the benefits of a model-based design system which does incorporate real-time aspects of the controller.

A new control system is currently being developed for the 1.2-meter Mercator Telescope at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory (La Palma, Spain). Formerly based on transputers, the new Mercator Observatory Control System (MOCS) consists of a small network of Linux computers complemented by a central industrial controller and an industrial real-time data communication network. Python is chosen as the high-level language to develop flexible yet powerful supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software for the Linux computers. Specialized applications such as detector control, auto-guiding and middleware management are also integrated in the same Python software package. The industrial controller, on the other hand, is connected to the majority of the field devices and is targeted to run various control loops, some of which are real-time critical. Independently of the Linux distributed control system (DCS), this controller makes sure that high priority tasks such as the telescope motion, mirror support and hydrostatic bearing control are carried out in a reliable and safe way. A comparison is made between different controller technologies including a LabVIEW embedded system, a PROFINET programmable logic controller (PLC) and motion controller, and an EtherCAT embedded PC (soft-PLC). As the latter is chosen as the primary platform for the lower level control, a substantial part of the software is being ported to the IEC 61131-3 standard programming languages. Additionally, obsolute hardware is gradually being replaced by standard industrial alternatives with fast EtherCAT communication. The use of Python as a scripting language allows a smooth migration to the final MOCS: finished parts of the new control system can readily be commissioned to replace the corresponding transputer units of the old control system with minimal downtime. In this contribution, we give an overview of gthe sytems design, implementation details and the current status of the project.
