The sinusoidal beam chopping system installed in the neutron time-of-flight (TOF) beam line at CYRIC was upgraded during the construction of the new K I 10 AVF cyclotron. In order to achieve high stability of the RF phase under easy control, a new low-level RF electronics was designed and built using a direct digital synthesizer (DDS). The new control system for the beam chopper was also developed on the basis of programmable logic controllers (PLC). The performance tests were successfully carried out with proton beams from the cyclotron. The present beam chopping system has covered a wide dynamic range from 325.5 to 1000 ns for neutron TOF measurements at CYRIC. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The programmable logic controller (PLC) is widely used in the industrial world, e.g. in manufacturing, chemical processing, materials handling, etc. The PLC-based control system can be regarded as a control system with low-resolution inputs and outputs. This paper presents a sophisticated control policy which can enhance the control performance for such a class of control system even if the complete information of the plant is not available. In particular, the case of existing uncertainty or perturbations in the input matrix is addressed. The key contribution of this paper is to clarify the identifiability condition for parameters included in the input matrix from measured low-resolution inputs and outputs. This investigation leads to the development of an indirect adaptive control policy with low-resolution inputs and outputs. Finally, the proposed indirect adaptive control policy is applied to the line-following control of a two-wheeled vehicle and its usefulness is demonstrated through experiment.

As programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are often used to implement safety-critical embedded software, safety demonstration of PLC code is needed. In this paper, we propose a fault tree analysis technique on Function Block Diagrams (FBDs) which is one of the most widely used PLC programming languages. FBD is currently being used to develop Reactor Protection System (RPS) for a nuclear power plant in South Korea. Our approach to fault tree analysis, which combines fault-oriented and cause/effect-oriented viewpoints, is easy to understand and offers systematic guidelines to ensure safety of PLC code. Domain experts found the approach to be useful through a case study on RPS, and this paper compares completeness and comprehensiveness of the semi-automatically generated fault trees using the proposed approach against the one manually prepared by nuclear safety engineers. The induction furnace has been used in a massive range of applications from heating, melting and welding to shrink-fitting, forming, soldering and even plasma physics. Furnaces operate at frequencies between 10 Hz to 60 MHz, and as a result, different power supplies - operating at different frequencies - have also been developed. Induction steel heating furnaces (ISHF) have several advantages in practical applications. However, when a material is heated within an ISHF, its resistivity and magnetic permeability fluctuate, which proves detrimental to the control of power within the furnace. One way to improve power control within an ISHF is to use a programmable logic controller (PLC). Indeed, modern PLCs are modular, affordable, have large memory capacities, and also have special functions such as pulse wave modulation (PWM) and data communication. Using a PLC not only eases position, temperature and pressure control within the ISHF, but also provides overvoltage and overcurrent protection. A new PLC control system design allows heating to take place at constant power while maintaining a steady resonance frequency. The article introduces the system.

Maintaining environmental stability in a dynamic system is often a very important task for a control system. Swings in environmental conditions can be harmful to equipment and cause inefficiencies in the system. These swings are present throughout our lives, in your living room for example, when you set the thermostat to 68 degrees the actual temperature cycles above and below 68 degrees. This project uses a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) in an Aquarium Control System to reduce the swings in temperature, ph level, and conductivity. The results of testing the online system and simulations show that the RNN does reduce these swings.

Inherently, the PLC-based system is a class of Hybrid Dynamical System (HDS) in which continuous state of the plant is controlled by the discrete logic-based controller. This paper firstly presents the formal algebraic model of the PLC-based control systems which enable the designer to formulate the various kinds of optimization problem. Secondly, the optimization problem of the 'sensor parameters,' such as the location of the limit switch in the material handling system, the threshold temperature of the thermostat in the temperature control system, is addressed. Finally, we formulate this problem as Mixed logical Dynamical Systems (MLDS) form which enables us to optimize the sensor parameters by applying the Mixed Integer Programming.

The ASE Institute Skopje, Institute of Automation and Computer Based Systems Engineering at EE Faculty of SS Cyril and Methodius University, has had a close collaboration with the respective company of Siemens in Macedonia. In Skopje, for some time the GTZ Centre aimed at enhancing technology transfer has been established. Within its scope and program of activities, we have created a dedicated centre within ASE Institute and developed special courses on PLC based automation in cooperation with the Siemens in Macedonia. In this paper we present our results and the current state of the matters on our special endeavours to contribute to combined knowledge and technology as well as training skills transfer to practicing control engineers in our country. Also, we put forward some recommendations on this trend in the conclusion.

Teleoperated robots are used to perform hazardous tasks that human operators cannot carry out. The purpose of this paper is to present a new architecture (ACROSET) for the development of these systems that takes into account the current advances in robotic architectures while adopting the component-oriented approach. ACROSET provides a common framework for developing this kind of robotized systems and for integrating intelligent components. The architecture is currently being used, tested and improved in the development of a family of robots, teleoperated cranes and vehicles which perform environmentally friendly cleaning of ship-hull surfaces (the EFTCoR project). The paper presents two different approaches to optimising operation speed of programmable logic controllers. First approach optimizes architecture of the CPU and the program execution. It shows the two processors bit-byte architecture which support of concurrent execution of bit and byte computation tasks. Second approach bases on hardware implemented control algorithm in reconfigurable platform based on FPGA. In second solution high performance is achieved by fully concurrent hardware execution of algorithm. Specific implementation tools enables typical PLC programming for hardware target platform.

This paper focuses on the possibilities of a Petri net based rapid control prototyping (RCP) tool chain. P/T nets extended by interfaces and connected to an extended state model allow the description of typical programmable logic controller tasks. After a general introduction to RCP, the method is applied to the area of sequential control, and code generation for the chosen model is depicted. The paper closes with an example for a tool chain, demonstrated by system simulation and Software-in-the-Loop for a subsystem of a flexible manufacturing system in an industrial fieldbus environment.
