Energy-Aware Edge Infrastructure Traffic Management Using programmable data planes in 5G and Beyond

Next-generation networks, particularly 5G and beyond, face rising energy demands that pose both economic and environmental challenges. In this work, we present a traffic management scheme leveraging programmable data planes and an SDN controller to achieve energy proportionality, matching network resource usage to fluctuating traffic loads. This approach integrates flow monitoring on programmable switches with a dynamic power manager in the controller, which selectively powers off inactive switches. We evaluate this scheme in an emulated edge environment across multiple urban traffic profiles. Our results show that disabling switches not handling traffic can significantly reduce energy consumption, even under relatively subtle load variations, while maintaining normal network operations and minimizing overhead on the control plane. We further include a projected savings analysis illustrating the potential benefits if the solution is deployed on hardware devices such as Tofino-based switches. Overall, these findings highlight how data plane-centric, energy-aware traffic management can make 5G-and-beyond edge infrastructures both sustainable and adaptable for future networking needs.

Industrial Internet of Things (I-IoT) applications require a large number of sensor data to be processed under tight delay and jitter constraints. In such applications, flexible event detection and fast reaction to critical events is an important building block. Traditional approaches use either proprietary networks and dedicated hardware or transmit sensor data towards processing elements in the Cloud or at the Network Edge, using distributed stream processing frameworks. For scalability, a large number of servers are needed and processing on commodity CPUs typically involves high and unpredictable latency. In this article, we explore how programmable data planes can be used to detect events flexibly and trigger customized and programmable actions directly from the switch program or the programmable network interface card (SmartNIC). We present FastReact-PS, an event-based publish/subscribe I-IoT processing framework in P4 language, which can be flexibly customized from the control plane. Together with stateful processing, FastReact-PS supports windowed time series analysis as well as complex event detection and processing based on Boolean logic directly in the data plane of newly emerging programmable networking devices. The logic can be adjusted dynamically from the control plane without the need for recompilation. We implement FastReact-PS in P4 and evaluate it on both a SmartNIC and a DPDK-based software switch running in user space. Our evaluation shows that the latency is reduced by one order of magnitude compared to end-host based approaches at significantly lower jitter while being scalable to processing up to 11 million events per second.

In the Internet of Things era, the Internet demands extremely high-speed communication and data transformation. To this end, the tactile Internet has been proposed as a medium that provides the sense of touch ability, facilitating data transferability with extra-low latency in various applications ranging from industry, robotics, and healthcare to road traffic, education, and culture. Here, programmable networks are role players in approaching the tactile Internet's low latency (approximate to 1ms) pillar. Several functionalities - including security - are offloaded onto the network core employing programmable in-network pipelines. From the security perspective, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is another role player that enables the line-rate inference on the core network without involving the control plane. However, integrating AI-based security solutions in programmable devices is challenging mainly because of their constrained anatomy. Furthermore, such solutions inherit well-known adversarial AI vulnerabilities, representing an additional threat to programmable networks. Considering the above, this article discusses AI-based security solutions in programmable networks, focusing on the explored modalities of integrating AI models in programmable constrained network devices. Moreover, we elaborate on the challenges and risks of relying on AI for such mechanisms. Lastly, the article brings a visionary glimpse for future trends in this regard, raising some essential questions on the indispensability of AI for security functionalities and providing some alternative solutions.

Visual Cloud Computing (VCC) applications provide highly efficient solutions in video data processing pipelines on edge/cloud infrastructures. These applications and their infrastructures demand end-to-end monitoring and fine-grained application traffic control to meet user quality of experience requirements. In this paper, we propose a novel network services management methodology for VCC applications by leveraging the advantages of programmable data planes enabled by Protocol-independent Packet Processors (P4). Specifically, we define a custom fixed-length application header and use it to improve the performance of a video streaming application through congestion avoidance using Multi-Hop Route Inspection (MRI), a variant of In-band Network Telemetry (INT), and switch port forwarding (tunneling) capabilities. For evaluation experiments, we use P4 per-packet telemetry metadata for routing paths, ingress/egress timestamps, queue occupancy in a given node, and egress port link utilization in a VCC testbed on the NSF-supported FABRIC infrastructure. Our experiment results demonstrate performance improvement obtained with our methodology in terms of both packet loss and throughput metrics.

Due to improving computational capacity of super-computers, transmitting encrypted packets via one single network path is vulnerable to brute-force attacks. The versatile attackers secretly eavesdrop all the packets, classify packets into different streams, performs an exhaustive search for the decryption key, and extract sensitive personal information from the streams. However, new Internet Protocol (IP) brings great opportunities and challenges for preventing eavesdropping attacks. In this paper, we propose a Programming Protocol-independent Packet Processors (P4) based Network Immune Scheme (P4NIS) against the eavesdropping attacks. Specifically, P4NIS is equipped with three lines of defense to improve the network immunity. The first line is promiscuous forwarding by splitting all the traffic packets in different network paths disorderly. Complementally, the second line encrypts transmission port fields of the packets using diverse encryption algorithms. The encryption could distribute traffic packets from one stream into different streams, and disturb eavesdroppers to classify them correctly. Besides, P4NIS inherits the advantages from the existing encryption-based countermeasures which is the third line of defense. Using a paradigm of programmable data planes-P4, we implement P4NIS and evaluate its performances. Experimental results show that P4NIS can increase difficulties of eavesdropping significantly, and increase transmission throughput by 31.7% compared with state-of-the-art mechanisms.

In the era of 5G/ 6G developments and Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) adoption, the telecommunications sector faces the dual challenge of enhancing network capabilities while mitigating environmental impact. This paper introduces an innovative architecture and methodology that leverages programmable data planes to address these concerns. Employing the P4 programming language and QUIC protocol, we propose dynamic load-balancing schemes for switches and servers, aiming to minimize energy consumption and carbon footprint without compromising network performance. Our methodology aims to deliver potential energy savings and enhanced reliability, providing a scalable solution for environmentally sustainable 5G/6G future network deployments.

Many new application domains for cellular networks have emerged as the fifth-generation (5G) rollout widens worldwide. One use case is deploying next-generation cellular technology within industrial networks, which traditionally rely on wired communication technologies as it requires significantly lower latency and higher reliability. As the next-generation cellular systems can achieve such requirements and have lower capital expenditures and operational expenses, industries have started investing in the deployment of cellular networks. However, today's cellular networks lack the possible optimizations for private networks as many of them are publicly operated by a few mobile network operators. With this in mind, this paper introduces Velox, a novel system for next-generation cellular networks with programmable data planes, extending our preliminary work that targets the data plane latency and reliability goals of industrial 55G networks. We design Velox as a Software-Defined Network architecture on the switches connecting the base stations to the private cellular core network to monitor and modify packets at the line speed. We present a novel layer 2 (L2) protocol within Velox to achieve real-time network management, namely Unified Control Plane (UCP). Velox adapts the link-state routing protocol for switches distributing network information such as connected base stations and user equipment (UE). We develop a software emulator and simulator platform for Velox to evaluate it on both small and large scale networks. Our evaluation results indicate an average latency reduction of 40% on the large-scaled networks. We demonstrate that Velox can distribute the connected UE information in less than a second.

While there are various methods to detect application layer attacks or intrusion attempts on an individual end host, it is not efficient to provide all end hosts in the network with heavy-duty defense systems or software firewalls. In this work, we leverage a new concept of programmable data planes, to directly react on alerts raised by a victim and prevent further attacks on the whole network by blocking the attack at the network edge.

We present the design and implementation of p4v, a practical tool for verifying data planes described using the P4 programming language. The design of p4v is based on classic verification techniques but adds several key innovations including a novel mechanism for incorporating assumptions about the control plane and domain-specific optimizations which are needed to scale to large programs. We present case studies showing that p4v verifies important properties and finds bugs in real-world programs. We conduct experiments to quantify the scalability of p4v on a wide range of additional examples. We show that with just a few hundred lines of control-plane annotations, p4v is able to verify critical safety properties for switch. p4, a program that implements the functionality of on a modern data center switch, in under three minutes.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) switch vendors are interested in extending switch data planes to support new and continuously evolving network protocols (e.g., NVGRE, VXLAN). Numerous commercial programmable data plane devices already enable a programmer to specify various aspects of the data plane including packet parsing, actions, and the layout of packet processing on the hardware device itself. Unlike OpenFlow-based devices, which only expose a series of fixed match-action table (MAT) abstraction, these specialized devices provide a more flexible abstraction for packet processing. Despite the increased programmability that these devices offer, however, the architecture of the target restricts the features that can be exposed to the programmer. Similarly, existing languages for programming the data planes in such devices (e.g., P4) assume a specific computational model, resembling the architecture of the device for which they are targeted for. Unfortunately, this model leads to similar limitations as in OpenFlow, where the high-level specification is coupled to the underlying device model. In this paper, we introduce NetASM, an intermediate representation for programmable data planes. NetASM is a device-independent language that is expressive enough to act as the target language for compilers for high-level languages, yet low-level enough to be efficiently assembled on various device architectures. It enables conventional compiler optimization techniques to significantly improve the performance and resource utilization of custom packet-processing pipelines on a variety of targets. © 2015 ACM.
