Insiders-who are within a security parameter of a system-can intentionally or unintentionally harm the system due to their granted access authorization and intimate knowledge of the system. Especially, Cyber-Manufacturing systems employing programmable logic controller (PLC) to control manufacturing processes via various computer networks can be easily compromised and critically damaged by insiders. This paper presents a system architecture of an applied blockchain in Cyber-Manufacturing System, where the input data for PLC is stored and retrieved through the blockchain. The paper demonstrates how the blockchain technology can help preventing the data from unintended manipulation or data injection by insiders. (c) 2020 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B. V. programmable logic controllers (PLCs) still are the state-of-the-art regarding the industrial automation control, but the Industry 4.0 advent is imposing new requirements, e.g., related to the capability to acquire and process data on real-time at the edge computational layer. On the other hand, the current availability of cheaper and more powerful processors opens new windows to develop low-cost and more advanced industrial controllers aligned with the Industry 4.0 principles. In this context, an important challenge is to improve the current state-of-the-art PLCs by taking into consideration the low-cost but powerful computational boards that will allow to embed IoT technologies and data analytics. This work describes the development of a low-cost but powerful industrial controller based on the use of the single-board computer Raspberry Pi, which allows executing logic control programs codified in IEC 61131-3, IEC 61499, or even in Java or Python, while maintaining the industrial requirements. The proposed platform was experimentally used to control an automation process based on a Fischertechniks platform.

Nowadays a lot of control systems are based on safety PLC (safety programmable logic controllers). The most of these PLC's are certified for SIL3 application (Safety integrity level 3). When components of this safety PLC are not used right then resulting SIL is lower. But when more components are used for realization of safety function properly with application diagnostics, then resulting SIL of SF (safety function) can be higher than SIL of used components. This paper deals with possibilities of various SRCS architectures with application diagnostics to reach required SIL.

This research consisted of the development and implementation of an updated communication architecture design of the H&K OMEGA LAVANA 345 bottle washing equipment. This development will guarantee a safe, reliable and modern industrial control system that will facilitate the operation of the equipment, in turn reducing the time lost in production by minimizing the late identification of faults and improving the reliability and safety of the machine. The motivation originated from the lack of spare parts in the market for the replacement of communication components damaged due to obsolescence and in units that have had more than 20 years of operation. With the implementation of the proposal, it was possible to reduce the average steam consumption by 1400 kg/shift, which is equivalent to 10.86% less steam used per shift generating a decrease in operating costs, demonstrating that the new control loops allow finer adjustments, which was not the case with the old controllers.

This research proposes the balancing control of the rotary inverted pendulum (RIP) by using PLC. The platform was designed and developed for PLC training kit, in order to enhance the learning a nonlinear control for stabilization problem. By using ST programming language, a modern PLC is capable to implement a robust control handling with complex task. In this work, OMRON PLC model CP1L-M30DTD which providing high-speed counter and high speed pulse output was used as main controller to provide real-time control. To compare the performance of stabilizing RIP, two controllers: PID and SMC control were designed and implemented in PLC. The optimal gain of PID controller was tuned by Ziegler Nichols first method, while SMC controller was designed based on system dynamic model. The conducted experiment result shows that the balancing performance was improved by SMC controller for 54.30%, even though PID controller provided lower oscillation result. The propose of SMC controller is to deal with an uncertainty in nonlinear system, while PID controller is to reduce the tracking error.

Growth of industry yields complex automated industrial systems, with reduced time for the system testing. Thus, importance of system modelling is increased. Sequential systems implement ordered sequence of functionally related operations. Occurrence of events marks the end, and initiates beginning of the operations. Therefore, the sequential systems are considered as event-driven systems. Modelling of discrete event system (DES) has to support asynchronous nature of the event occurrence, and different types of variables for the system representation. Due to these reasons, state diagrams, flow charts, Petri nets and automata are adopted for the DES modelling. A benchmark sequential system is modelled with the mentioned tools. Obtained models are compared with respect to information content, applicability to the system analysis, as well as design and testing of control software for programmable logic controllers.

The field of CPSs is growing rapidly. In recent years, a variety of CPS applications in different domains have flourished. Meanwhile, there have also been more frequent attacks on CPSs. The problem becomes more aggravated as the number of attacks against critical infrastructures increases rapidly. Thus, it is important to develop novel solutions to secure these critical CPSs. This research studies different techniques to infer the critical information of a Cyber-Physical System (CPS) at different levels, leveraging the physics of the CPS. One way of verifying the authenticity and integrity of an operating CPS is to check the fingerprints generated by the static structure and the dynamic operation of the CPS in the "cyber" domain, e.g., network traffic and control programs, or in a side channel, e.g., vibration and sound. A CPS can be physically characterized at three layers, namely, device model and configuration (device), process model (process), and process parameters (parameter) from the lowest to the highest layer. In this research, the correlation between the physics attributes of each layer and its fingerprints in the cyber domains and side channels is studied. Then methodologies to infer critical information of the CPSs from such correlation are studied and evaluated. The outcome from this research can be interpreted as both offensive and defensive techniques. On the one hand, attackers may leverage the device/process/parameter inference techniques to obtain sensitive information about critical infrastructures. Understanding the effectiveness of the inference techniques is a crucial step in discovering the vulnerabilities in these critical infrastructures. On the other hand, for defenders, such inference techniques can also be used to verify the correct operation of the CPS by checking the observed fingerprints against the expected values. These techniques can be used as a basis to develop novel solutions to secure the CPSs.

An implementation of a class of advanced process control algorithms is considered. The class is related to adaptive control systems and it is characterized by nonlinearities of a controlled process and singularities of an actuation channel. The implementation is suitable to be easily integrated into a modern industrial environment because it is based on industrial programmable logic controllers. The implementation is verified in hardware simulator that is connected to a numerical model of a nonlinear process.

Cyber-physical systems CPS are computer systems interconnected with physical world. In case of industrial applications they are called also Industrial Control Systems ICS. Most characteristic feature of ICS is operation in real-time. It means that they must satisfy strictly defined temporal constraints. Another important aspect is reliability. It is expected that ICS system operates 24/7. Some systems have to be also fault-tolerant, which means that a failure of one or more components should not disable proper operation of the system. To satisfy the latter demand, redundancy is used. One of examples of redundancy application is redundancy of computing units (like for example programmable logic controllers PLCs in industrial control systems). It may be realized using dedicated components but also in more cost-effective way, using standard elements. In the second case, proper implementation of software redundancy routines is crucial. The paper shows a state machine used for implementation of computing units redundancy operating in hot-standby mode.

Ubiquitous Control of a CNC Machine: Proof of Concept for Industrial IoT Applications

In this paper, an integrated system to control and manage a state-of-the-art industrial computer numerical control (CNC) machine (Studer S33) using a commercially available tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tablet S2) is presented as a proof of concept (PoC) for the ubiquitous control of industrial machines. As a PoC, the proposed system provides useful insights to support the further development of full-fledged systems for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications. The proposed system allows for the quasi-decentralisation of the control architecture of conventional programmable logic controller (PLC)-based industrial control systems (ICSs) through data and information exchange over the transmission control protocol and the internet protocol (TCP/IP) suite using multiple agents. Based on the TCP/IP suite, a network device (Samsung Galaxy Tablet S2) and a process field net (PROFINET) device (Siemens Simatic S7-1200) are interfaced using a single-board computer (Raspberry Pi 4). An override system mainly comprising emergency stop and acknowledge buttons is also configured using the single-board computer. The input signals from the override system are transmitted to the PROFINET device (i.e., the industrial control unit (ICU)) over TCP/IP. A fully functional working prototype is realised as a PoC for an integrated system designated for the wireless and ubiquitous control of the CNC machine. The working prototype as an entity mainly comprises a mobile (handheld) touch-sensitive human-machine interface (HMI), a shielded single-board computer, and an override system, all fitted into a compact case with physical dimensions of 300 mm by 180 mm by 175 mm. To avert potential cyber attacks or threats to a reasonable extent and to guarantee the security of the PoC, a multi-factor authentication (MFA) including an administrative password and an IP address is implemented to control the access to the web-based ubiquitous HMI proffered by the PoC.
