programmable logic controllers (PLCs), the essential components of critical infrastructure, play a crucial role in various industrial manufacturing processes. Recent attack events show that attackers have a strong interest in tampering with the controller variables, such as the device status and internal program logic. A typical attack strategy is that the attackers just send malicious network traffic of industrial control protocols (ICPs) to change the controller variables of PLCs. To defend against this attack, a lot of countermeasures have been proposed to detect anomalies in network traffic based on the semantic analysis. However, the proprietary nature of ICPs poses a challenge to extracting the required semantics for evaluating the controller variables. In this paper, we propose a novel framework named SePanner to extract the semantics of controller variables from proprietary ICPs based on network traffic. Specifically, SePanner conducts the multi-state comparison to locate the semantic fields directly, then removes the interfering fields by the single-state comparison and filtering criteria. Our experiments demonstrate that SePanner can precisely extract the semantics of controller variables from proprietary ICPs, providing protection for PLCs while remaining compatible with various proprietary binary protocols.

programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are widely used for process control and automation in safety-critical systems, such as reactor protection systems (RPS) in nuclear power plants. Industrial systems are often composed of multiple PLCs and have several interfaces with other systems. It is crucial to test PLC programs for such systems effectively. As manual integration testing is costly and time-consuming, simulation-based testing is becoming more important in validating safety-critical systems. However, simulation-based testing is limited because the simulation execution results may differ from the real PLC program execution results. This study presents the PLC synchronization method and multiple PLCs execution method for the Automated Simulation-based Integrated Testing approach (ASIT). MultiPLCTester is a test tool we developed to support ASIT and it executes test inputs with a simulation model and communicates with a PLC and compares them with execution results. Based on the synchronized test execution results, it conducts ASIT for target systems. We performed experiments using real industrial cases to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach. The test suite execution time using ASIT was significantly reduced compared to the manual integration testing. When considering the test execution time and the cost of building a test bed, ASIT provides effective and efficient integrated testing for PLC testers.

The definition of cyber-physical systems (CPSs) is that they integrate sensing, actuation, storage, computation, control, decision-making, and networking into physical systems and objects, connecting them to the Internet and to each other. With the advancement of complex hardware and software technologies and the prevalence of the Internet of Things (IoTs), interactions of cyber and physical components open a “Pandora’s Box” of unknown threats that can come from unconventional ways. CPSs have tight integration of cyber and physical components, and complex interactions happen between this cyber and physical layer which may affect the safety and controllability of closed-loop control from sensing to actuation. In most cases, researchers put significant efforts into improving the efficiency and responsiveness of the cyber and physical interactions in CPSs. However, the CIA triad - textitconfidentiality, integrity, and availability, is often absent while designing the interactions between cyber and physical parts. As a result, attacks and vulnerabilities are lurking between cyber and physical intersections. The cyber and physical layers in CPSs are termed Cross-layers in this thesis. Most attacks on CPSs can be propagated into this cross-layer, i.e., from the physical domain to the cyber domain or vice-versa, and hence, can be termed as cross-domain attacks. To understand these cross-domain attacks and to address the challenges that exist in the cross-layer, a very different set of methodologies and tools are needed. Moreover, as these cross-domain attacks involve hardware and software layers, defenses against these vulnerabilities also demand new hardware/software co-design approaches to detect, contain and isolate vulnerabilities in CPSs. The first half of the thesis addresses some interesting and unconventional attack models and vulnerabilities in CPSs, particularly focusing on the smart power grid systems, bio-safety labs, and industrial control systems (ICSs). This study developed an automated filtration system for a selected rotifer, Brachionus ibericus. This system is controlled by a programmable logic controller, and it enables the high-density cultivation of marine rotifers and the selection of rotifers for palatability. We tested seven mesh sizes (300, 200, 100, 50, 20, 5, and 1 mu m) for commercial 10-inch (25.4-cm) stainless steel tubular filters in the proposed system, after which we selected the optimal mesh size for filtering impurities, separating rotifers, eliminating wastewater, and minimizing the rotifer loss rate. The results indicated that a combination of the 5- and 200-mu m meshes produced optimal filtration efficiency. After every 120 s of filtration followed by a 30-s flushing process, a rotifer density of 3170 +/- 101 individuals/ml, a mesh blocking loss rate of 4.95 +/- 3.62%, and impurity-free rotifer volume of 45.18 +/- 1.2 L were obtained. Our study verified that tubular filters can be used in commercial aquaculture.

IoT - based remote monitoring and controlling of the substation is proposed in this work. It is done by using a Flexy-205 IoT Gateway and remote access router. The substation automation plant model has different model divisions such as City, Urban, Rural 1, and Rural 2, which have circuit breakers and lights. This model is controlled with the help of Siemens S7-300 programmable logic controller. A ladder logic program has developed in Simatic Manager software. The Flexy-205 is an advanced internet data gateway that allows machine builders to access and collect data remotely for evaluation and analytical maintenance. The remote access and data collection from the substation plant using S7-300 PLC with Flexy-205 is done by using Ebuddy and ECatcher software. The Graphical User Interface for substation remote access is created using viewON software. The proposed method is successfully tested on the substation remotely. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces an ultra-low-power 32-bit microcontroller and develops a 16-channel switching volume acquisition local device as its main control chip. The device is a programmable logic controller switching volume acquisition device, which adopts optoelectronic isolation technology to convert the switching volume signals of the on-site equipment into high and low level digital signals that can be recognized by the system. The switching volume acquisition device can be widely used in water supply and drainage pipe network, water conservancy hub, reservoir, irrigation district and other switching volume monitoring water conservancy projects. © 2023 IEEE.

Obfuscation strategies for industrial control systems☆

Recently released scan data on Shodan reveals that thousands of Industrial Control Systems (ICSs) worldwide are directly accessible via the Internet and, thus, exposed to cyber-attacks aiming at financial gain, espionage, or disruption and/or sabotage. Executing sophisticated cyber-physical attacks aiming to manipulate industrial functionalities requires a deep understanding of the underlying physical process at the core of the target ICS, for instance, through unauthorized access to memory registers of programmable logic controllers (PLCs). However, to date, countermeasures aiming at hindering the comprehension of physical processes remain largely unexplored. In this work, we investigate the use of obfuscation strategies to complicate process comprehension of ICSs while preserving their runtime evolution. To this end, we propose a framework to design and evaluate obfuscation strategies for PLCs, involving PLC memory registers, PLC code (user program), and the introduction of extra (spurious) physical processes. Our framework categorizes obfuscation strategies based on two dimensions: the type of (spurious) registers employed in the obfuscation strategy and the dependence on the (genuine) physical process. To evaluate the efficacy of proposed obfuscation strategies, we introduce evaluation metrics to assess their potency and resilience, in terms of system invariants the attacker can derive, and their cost in terms of computational overhead due to runtime modifications of spurious PLC registers. We developed a prototype tool to automatize the devised obfuscation strategies and applied them to a non-trivial use case in the field of water tank systems. Our results show that code obfuscation can be effectively used to counter malicious process comprehension of ICSs achieved via scanning of PLC memory registers. This paper proposes an agent for OPC unified architecture (UA) that enables UA information service and client functions in legacy programmable logic controllers (PLC). The agent runs on a separate machine connected to the PLC using a dedicated link and maintains shared memory with the PLC. Based on the synchronized variables, the agent provides information models and executes client function blocks on behalf of the PLC. One important design feature is that the agent uses synchronized variables to implement a simplified remote procedure call (RPC) mechanism that conforms to the IEC 61131-3 functional model. This allows standard OPC-UA client functions to be used in existing PLC programs that only support numeric types and do not support strings or complex structures.

Many components of our STELLA telescopes located on Tenerife, which were built by Halfmann in the 2000s have reached the end of their life with no replacement parts available. A solution was necessary to guarantee continuous operation and support for the next ten years. The prerequisite for the retrofit, however, was that the mechanical components remain largely untouched in order to simplify the upgrade. We decided to remove all the existing electronics in the main control cabinet. In order to avoid electronic interference in the scientific instruments, we took several precautions. This included an isolating transformer, line filters and power chokes for the servo drivers. All of the control electronics as well as the sensory inputs is now handled by Beckhoff components. A Beckhoff PLC CX5140 is the new "electronic brain" replacing a Linux computer running the telescope control firmware. The new telescope control firmware written in TwinCAT3 is available as open source. MQTT messages are used to command the telescope and report sensor values and position information. Sensor measurements and the state of the telescope are logged in an Influx-database and visualized using Grafana(dagger). Future enhancements include an improved guiding of the telescope using machine vision and a GigE camera in a closed loop on the PLC.
