Sign Languages are languages that use the visual-manual modality to convey meaning. It serves as a medium of communication between speech-impaired people and normal people. They are full-fledged natural languages with their own grammar, lexicon and classifications such as American, Indian, Chinese and so on. However, due to the non-universality of sign languages, there is a huge communication gap between the speech or hearing-impaired people and others. Hence, they also suffer from access to basic education. In this work, a low-latency real-time sign language recognition application is developed for detecting and processing gestures performed from the Indian Sign Language (ISL) dictionary using a Convolutional Neural Network model, and identify the words that are being communicated. We focus our application on words from a specific domain, i.e., basic programming keywords, through a custom-made dataset containing 500 different images of the gesture corresponding to each word. Our application strives to detect both static and dynamic gestures performed by the user, and generate Python- like syntax for various constructs such as if and loop, with a minimal response time of less than 0.1s. This can potentially make inroads into educating disabled people in the field of programming.

The present paper demonstrates a teaching approach in programming course for beginners: schoolchildren and schoolteachers. This course was developed at the Institute of Informatics at Tallinn University of Technology and it based on many years experience in teaching programming for non-IT first year students. The main aim of the course is to raise the motivation and keep the interest of the learners in programming field. Authors suggest some ways and methods to overcome complexity in the first stage in a coding.

Using an Online Serious Game to Teach Basic programming Concepts and Facilitate Gameful Experiences for High School Students

Teaching programming to pre-university students has attracted a great deal of attention in the last years. The benefits of teaching programming before University have been investigated by taking several approaches to improve the students' learning scores, motivation and satisfaction levels. Serious Games (SGs) are also gaining an increasing research interest for education. SGs can be defined as games designed for a primary goal other for than pure entertainment. In the case of this paper, the DFD-C serious game has been created to investigate whether High School students will improve their learning of programming fundamentals and, if there are gender differences in the improvement. Moreover, it is explored the perception of the gameful experience by the students when using a serious game such as DFD-C, and if this perception is different in the case of boys or girls. An experiment with 38 K-10 High School students has been carried out during the 2019-2020 academic year. All students took a pre-test at the beginning of the experiment. After that, they were randomly split into a control group (no use of DFD-C) and a test group (use of DFD-C). Finally, all of them took the same test (post-test) to measure their learning gains. The test group also completed the Gamefulquest questionnaire to evaluate their perception of the gameful experience. A significant improvement in the scores of the test students was registered, with no gender differences. Moreover, the answers to the Gamefulquest reveal that students had a positive gameful experience, being the ratings of the girls slightly higher than boys. It is concluded that using SGs to teach learning programming fundamentals to High School students increased their learning scores and students perceived the sense of playfulness, guidance and social experience of the SG without having significant differences between girls and boys.

The aim of our research was to investigate the process of teachers transitioning to teaching programming in Python, with respect to the challenges they face and support they require. Through the methods of qualitative research, we analysed a number of cases where computer science teachers transitioned from teaching in Pascal to Python. Based on the analysis of these cases, we propose a categorization for the transformation process. We identified influencing factors and present recommendations to support teachers transitioning to teaching a new language. We believe our research will contribute to improved support for teachers transitioning to teaching programming basics in new programming languages.

Chaiken gave a keynote speech at SATURN 2011 on "Architecture at Internet Scale" that stressed a set of timeless principles that software engineers seemingly have to relearn continuously. Here, he describes the role algorithms play in the programmer's toolkit.
