To help programmer gaining sound concepts of a programming language and boost their problem solving ability, this study constructs a programming environment, which, based on the self-explanation strategy, gives proper feedbacks for the programmers of C++language. The embedded self-explanation strategy guides the environment which, when programmers gets compilation errors, gives extended examples for the programmers and ask them for self-explanations on the inference of the error after they study the examples. An algorithm developed in this study compares the self-explanation sentence from a programmer with base strings, established and organized into an ontology by programing experts, and finds possible errors on the explanation, which lead to his/her possible misconceptions. Based on the results, the environment manages to feedback proper learning material and extended examples for programmers to correct their possible misconceptions. This study builds an ontology of C++ concepts class hierarchy with class properties and instances being possible misconceptions and the learning material feedbacks. The possible misconceptions are collected from actual programming practices in several pilot experiments joined by programmers of college students. The final experiment involves 13 college students who use the system for actual programming. The environment records students' programming activities, analyzes their self-explanations on errors, and gives proper feedbacks, which, after verified by programming experts, reaches an average accuracy of 84.7%. The distinctive feature of this study is the open question style self explanation sentence requirement, a rare research of its kind. All the schemes and algorithms developed in this study can be used as a methodology for establishing system with self-explanation learning strategy in other fields.

The current analysis was mainly focused to the study of the strained physical effects arising from a decrease of the particles number, The main aspects concerning programming concepts as well as languages having influence on the computer time of simulations is also presented. The limitation in the particles amount was adopted by increasing the particle radii to keep constant the total mass of granular material. In this way, the performed computer simulations of the filling and discharge in three-dimensional hopper using 1980, 10000 and 20400 number of particles were shown that the decrease in particles number with increasing the particle radii produces an artificial friction due to material homogeneity. This is results in the decreased mass fraction and its rate during discharge causing the longest time for the full material discharge;the decreased normal and increased shear pressure of walls.

The inherent abstractness in nature and intangibility in essence of computer programming concepts, present weak mental models that make them to be intuitively challenging to be easily understood by students. This remains a key factor in general underperformance of students in computer programming courses. Pedagogical use of metaphors is widely acknowledged as a means of addressing the challenge. As a result, the literature is replete with proposals for metaphor use to enhance understanding of various computer programming concepts, and positive results have been reported. However, the lack of a theory-driven methodological framework for appropriate pedagogical use of metaphors, has slowed progress in this direction. To fill this gap in the literature, a framework for appropriate pedagogical use of metaphors in the teaching and learning of programming concepts is proposed. The framework is developed, employing a triangulation of the theories of Conceptual Metaphor, Experiential Learning, Structure Mapping, and ontology modelling, to provide theoretical and methodological underpinnings for the framework. The result of a proof of concept using the ATM metaphor and programming concepts of Data Processing and Control Structures, stands promising.

Professions in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are the driver for technological innovation and economic growth. However, Educators are facing challenges creating awareness and excitement for STEM careers to attract young students to the field. Due to teenagers' wide interest in mobile technologies, our camp used smartphones as a context to teach programming. We organized a one-week summer camp targeting middle and high school students. The camp introduced mobile application development using basic web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). Therefore, this paper presents an experience report describing our approach and the most innovative activities that were applied. Our evaluation of the camp includes surveys and the students' projects to measure the success of the camp in reaching its objectives. The results show that the students enjoyed the camp, learned and used the main concepts in their projects, and became interested in the field. We also discuss the limitations and future improvements based on our experience and observations.

Specialized digital fanzines were successfully used to facilitate learning problematic concepts in an undergraduate programming course, dynamically adapting to student needs. The design of these fanzines favors creating and reading them quickly by establishing a common graphical layout, rules, and focusing in the most problematic parts of the concepts. This paper details the agile fanzine creation procedure, the way problematic concepts were identified and quickly handled, and how this approach was implemented in an actual course, so it could be applied to other courses with similar needs.

This paper presents the goals and organization of a course about programming designed to provide entering students in a graduate program with a cultural enrichment in their professional lives. The students are expected to have taken at least two programming courses prior to this one and, therefore, to be familiar with at least two programming languages, both as students and users. Teaching someone how to program is similar to teaching him to play a musical instrument; neither skill can be taught—they must be learned. However, the teacher still serves several vital purposes: to present a set of rules for producing well-formed utterances; to offer numerous demonstrations of his own skill; and to function as an involved critic. Diagrams in textbooks are an essential tool to explain concepts. An effective diagram should help a novice learner to build a runnable mental model, increase recall, and improve problem-solving skills. Richard Mayer and others suggest that to have an impact on the readers' mental model, diagrams must document two major features: system topology and component behavior. The presence of these two features makes a diagram explanative. In this paper, we propose a framework of what constitutes explanative diagram for variables, arrays, and objects based on Mayer et al.'s definition. We used our framework to analyze diagrams of variables, arrays, and objects in 15 commonly used introductory Java textbooks to ascertain how these concepts are illustrated, annotated and explained. Our results show that none of the textbooks provide what we would consider as explanative diagrams. We conclude with an assessment of diagrams in introductory programming textbooks and present open questions for further study.

Entry-level college programming courses have high failure rates, which lead to high dropout rates for associated majors. These courses typically cover fundamental programming concepts for students to master in order to succeed in their majors. When attempting to perceive a student's competency, instructors often utilize Automated Assessment Tools, but most tools do not fully record student progress in assignments. Access to the student's problem solving steps can provide educators a more complete understanding of the student's thought process. Our tool tracks the student's steps and sequencing while attempting to complete assignments. With this resource, teaching methodologies can be modified to more effectively foster successful problem-solving strategies within early programming courses.
