Customizable and scalable automated assessment of C/C plus plus programming assignments

The correction of exercises in programming courses is a laborious task that has traditionally been performed in a manual way. This situation, in turn, delays the access by students to feedback that can contribute significantly to their training as future professionals. Over the years, several approaches have been proposed to automate the assessment of students' programs. Static analysis is a known technique that can partially simulate the process of manual code review performed by lecturers. As such, it is a plausible option to assess whether students' solutions meet the requirements imposed on the assignments. However, implementing a personalized analysis beyond the rules included in existing tools may be a complex task for the lecturer without a mechanism that guides the work. In this paper, we present a method to provide automated and specific feedback to immediately inform students about their mistakes in programming courses. To that end, we developed the CAC++ library, which enables constructing tailored static analysis programs for C/C++ practices. The library allows for great flexibility and personalization of verifications to adjust them to each particular task, overcoming the limitations of most of the existing assessment tools. Our approach to providing specific feedback has been evaluated for a period of three academic years in a course related to object-oriented programming. The library allowed lecturers to reduce the size of the static analysis programs developed for this course. During this period, the academic results improved and undergraduates positively valued the aid offered when undertaking the implementation of assignments.

In large undergraduate computer science classrooms, student learning on assignments is often gauged only by the work on their final solution, not by their programming process. As a consequence, teachers are unable to give detailed feedback on how students implement programming methodology, and novice students often lack a metacognitive understanding of how they learn. We introduce Pen sieve as a drag-and-drop, open-source tool that organizes snapshots of student code as they progress through an assignment. The tool is designed to encourage sit-down conversations between student and teacher about the programming process. The easy visualization of code evolution over time facilitates the discussion of intermediate work and progress towards learning goals, both of which would otherwise be unapparent from a single final submission. This paper discusses the pedagogical foundations and technical details of Pensieve and describes results from a particular 207-student classroom deployment, suggesting that the tool has meaningful impacts on education for both the student and the teacher.

In the ideal CS1 classroom, we should understand programming process-how student code evolves over time. However, for graphics-based programming assignments, the task of understanding and grading final solutions, let alone thousands of intermediate steps, is incredibly labor-intensive. In this work, we present a challenge, a dataset, and a promising first solution to autonomously use image output to identify functional, intermediate stages of a student solution. By using computer vision techniques to associate visual output of intermediate student code with functional progress, we supplement a lot of the teacher labor associated with understanding graphics-based, open-ended assignments. We hope our publication of the dataset used in our case study sparks discussion in the community on how to analyze programs with visual program output.

In the recent years, educational institutions are using the advantage of cloud computing in e-learning. In Kabul Polytechnic University (KPU) programming courses begin with introductory lectures in algorithms provided as lecture sessions and the concepts taught are applied in lab activities later, in order to connect the programming theories with practice, laboratory activities require services/resources (e.g. web server, database server, network resources...etc.) These resources need to be available during the lab activity. But in reality, the resources are limited and the number of students exceeds the number of resources. In this paper, we are introducing an architecture Virtual programming Practice Lab (VPPL). The solution is intended to increase the capability of computer labs for programming courses currently offered at KPU.

As computer science classes grow, instructor workload also increases: teachers must simultaneously teach material, provide assignment feedback, and monitor student progress. At scale, it is hard to know which students need extra help, and as a result some students can resort to excessive collaboration-using online resources or peer code-to complete their work. In this paper, we present TMOSS, a tool that analyzes the intermediate steps a student takes to complete a programming assignment. We find that for three separate course offerings, TMOSS is almost twice as effective as traditional software similarity detectors in identifying the number of students who exhibit excessive collaboration. We also find that such students spend significantly less time on their assignment, use fewer class tutoring resources, and perform worse on exams than their peers. Finally, we provide a theory of the parametric distribution of typical student assignment similarity, which allows for probabilistic interpretation.

Identifying Novice Student programming Misconceptions and Errors From Summative Assessments

This article presents a study aimed at examining the novice student answers in an introductory programming final e-exam to identify misconceptions and types of errors. Our study used the Delphi concept inventory to identify student misconceptions and skill, rule, and knowledge-based errors approach to identify the types of errors made by novices in Python programming. The students' responses to each question were scrutinized by using the Delphi concept inventory, heuristic-analytic theory, and neo-Piagetian theory of cognitive development for qualitative data analysis. Moreover, the motivation for this exploratory study was to also address the misconceptions that students held in programming and help educators to redefine the teaching methods to correct those alternative conceptions. Student misconceptions were spotted in list referencing and inbuilt functions in Python. In a further quantitative analysis, the study found that students who had misconceptions made knowledge errors and failed to complete the coding tasks. Surprisingly, and coincidentally, it was identified that only a few students were able to write code related to mathematical problems.

This project determines what skills and knowledge a student must have to face successfully an introductory programming course. This is an exploratory and qualitative study based on analysis of the current proposals for programming courses, and on interviews and focus groups with students and professors of this courses. The analysis is performed using Atlas Ti. Colombia is defined as the context for the research. The competencies identified are related with reading comprehension skills, especially the ability to perform text analysis. According to the information found, this skill reflects the ability of students to understand a problem. This greatly facilitates the possibility of writing a solution algorithm. A second ability has to do with to logical thinking. This second ability is justified because allows break a problem into simpler ones. Other abilities and knowledge are highlighted in the final results.

Retention of first year students in Computer Science is a concern for universities internationally. Especially programming courses are regarded as difficult, and often have the highest failure and dropout rates. The Informatics School at Universidad Nacional in Costa Rica is not an exception. For this reason the school is focusing on different teaching methods to help their students master these skills. This paper introduces an experimental, controlled comparison study of three learning designs, involving a problem based learning (PBL) approach in connection with the use of LEGO Mindstorms to improve students programming skills and motivation for learning in an introductory programming course. The paper reports the results related with one of the components of the study - the experiential qualities of the three learning designs. The data were collected through a questionnaire survey with 229 students from three groups exposed to different learning designs and through six qualitative walk-alongs collecting data from these groups by informal interviews and observations. Findings from the three studies were discussed in three focus group interviews with 10 students from the three experimental groups.

Research methodology education is one of the less studied and discussed areas of computing education. Underplaying methodological education starts from computing curricula, which discuss methodology to different degrees, depending on the branch of computing. In computer science education research, programming courses have been analyzed through and through, but methodology courses in computing are largely devoid of course descriptions, analytic studies, and experimental studies. This paper presents the learning objectives, contents, and arrangements for a fully online graduate level course on research methodology and research design in computing. The course was run twice in a relatively large school of computing (6915 students) and it included students from a neighboring institution of the same size. Students' (N=136) learning was analyzed from multiple viewpoints. Their final work was analyzed qualitatively by course facilitators as well as scored on a 90-point scale. Their coursework was qualitatively reviewed and graded by their peers and facilitators. The effect of students' learning approaches to course results was analyzed using Biggs' R-SPQ-2F questionnaire. Student feedback was collected using a slightly modified course feedback questionnaire of the university. This paper presents the course arrangements, course results, and analysis of students' learning.

programming-is the nucleus foundation course in computer subjects, and also is considered generally as a hard learning and teaching course.
